Gustavo's Latest "Orange County Line" for KCRW: On Arte Moreno's Decade Owning Your Anaheim Angels of Anaheim!

This year marks a decade since Phoenix businessman Arte Moreno bought Orange County's Angels baseball franchise, becoming the first Latino owner of a major-league professional sports franchise. It's been a stormy 10 years, with Moreno at first endearing himself to fans by spending hundreds of millions of dollars on free agent signings to ensure a winning, then blowing away all that goodwill by changing the team's name to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. With the Angels heading into the All Star break with a losing record, and fan attendance lower this year, what is Moreno's legacy so far?

That was the subject of my KCRW-FM 89.9 "Orange County Line" commentary, which you can listen to below. Enjoy!

Fuck the Triple A team from Anaheim and their Tucson via Scottsdale owner who has no business in baseball let alone acting like a GM. All LAAofA fans are NOT bandwagoners, they're posers.

How can latinos NOT be Angels fans? He lowered the price of beer when he first took over. That's reason enough for me!

The strategy of "Los Angeles Angels" was to allow the team to market worldwide.....they could have been the west coast Yankees. As a California Angels fan since I started walking..I hated the name...but understood the concept. The plan was to lower prices for locals.....but make it up by merchandising worldwide.....I don't know if the merchandising has worked out. Anaheim took a dump because they saw themselves as an up and coming worldwide nameplate. yeah....not. If they're not careful, this team could end up in Burbank. the added money from worldwide merchandising the LA brand would have allowed paying huge money for great free agents and not worry about the farm system (aka yankees). unfortunately, they need to win to make this all work. and they aint. that's baseball.

I grew up a Dodger fan and have never been an Angel Fan, but i did like the fact there was finally a Latino owner in Major League Baseball...His Legacy, changing the Name to the "Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim" was a big mistake in my opinion, something that the fans will never forget..I prefered the "California Angels" As for some of his baseball decisions, like in any major sport, it's a gamble..One never knows how a player is going to turn out...

A lot of these people were just bandwagoners anyway, not true fans.

I can't like the Angels simply because their name is redundant.

Should the Irish like Notre Dame because the team is called "The Fighing Irish"? If they are playing good, then yes......
