Jeremy Dwayne Martin did not appreciate that his father did not want a firearm in their Huntington Beach home, so the 37-year-old shot and killed dear old dad.

A jury in Santa Ana today convicted Martin of murder with a sentencing enhancement for the personal discharge of a firearm causing death, setting him up for a possible sentence of 50 years to life in state prison at a May 10 hearing.

The son got into a verbal argument with 62-year-old Frederick Dwayne Martin early in the morning of May 20, 2011, in their home at 21851 Newland St.

When the confrontation over Jeremy Martin's desire to keep a firearm in the house turned physical, Frederick Martin called to ask the Huntington Beach Police Department to send an officer over to "evaluate" his son, without mentioning the gun or the physical altercation, according to prosecutors.

Cops came to the home, but Jeremy Martin did not answer the door. After the officers left, he shot his father one time, killing him. Jeremy Martin then called 911 to report the murder. He was arrested at his home without incident.

During the trial, the defense argued that Jeremy Martin killed his father while in a methamphetamine-induced psychosis, and therefore could not form the intent to kill, reads a statement from the Orange County District Attorney's office.
