William Douglas Agopian, Schools Official, Gets 8 Years for Stealing $700k, False Tax Return
The Santa Ana 61-year-old pleaded guilty in LA Superior Court Sept. 4 to one felony count each of misappropriation of public funds and filing a false tax return.
Agopian could have shaved three years off his sentence had he agreed to repay the school district $700,000 and pay $121,000 to the state's Franchise Tax Board, the district attorney's office said last September.
He'd stolen funds from an account the district set up for a student sister city trip to Mexico and spent the booty on hotel rooms, his tax bills, hot tub equipment and tickets for sporting events.
