[VIDEO] Santa Ana Police Freak Out As Activist Films Them at Patrol Stop

copwatch.jpg
Elementary and junior high students in the Los Angeles Unified School District returned this week to an increased police presence as a response in the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary massacre.

The opposite happened in SanTana: one student  complained to Copwatch Santa Ana activists about continual mistreatment and harassment after school let out at McFadden Intermediate.

On December 18, 2012, Ángel Juárez of CopWatch went to the school on Raitt Street to see what was going on.

The activist happened upon a young woman who had been pulled over and began filming as a student sat on the curb. Officer Aquino asked that Juárez step back as he was conducting an investigation but the activist countered that he, at thirteen feet back, was at a reasonable distance and was not interfering with the policeman's work.

As the video goes on to show, other officers, five in total, arrived on scene. One asked for his identification. Juárez countered with the question "Am I being detained?" which if not answered affirmatively, as it wasn't, gave him the ability to walk away so as to not be subjected to a consensual encounter by law enforcement.

At another point, he asked the question once more after his presence filming outside an intermediate school in dismissal was described as kind of "odd" and "suspicious." This came after the video shows him informing officers that he was there only to observe the police.

Afterward, Juárez tells the Weekly that with the camera turned off, he and a companion were detained and their belongings were searched. He says he hasn't been able to obtain an incident report from Santa Ana school police despite numerous requests having been already made.

Some cops just hate it when u ask a question. It's the unwritten code of "contempt of cop" which usually results in a 148pc (obstructing, resisting, interfering)  or 647 F, drunk in public arrest. In the old days, that's how gang members were controlled in high crime areas. However, some cops treat a majority of curious law abiding citizens who just want to make sure the public servants are not over stepping their boundaries to protect & to serve as criminals. Instead of making friends in their patrol areas, cops are making enemies. We have become a police state where most citizens are being treated disrespectfully and the cops are above the law.

Everyone on here blindly defending the cops are either a) cops or b) pussies who would never have the guts to stand up against inappropriate police behavior if their lives depended on it. Please id yourselves as you comment.

Cops that abuse their authority--and most of these cops were clearly abusing their authority--are cowards and traitors to freedom. Good job, fellas, that's a lot to accomplish in one day.

This is not a black and white issue, I know that area very well. There is alot gang activity and the Police presence is appretiated. BUUUUUUT!!!! To harass regualr citizens and talk down to people like they are nothing but dirt is a stupid and unprofessional. Thses cops didn't even know how to handle a simple guy with a camera. SAPD needs to lean how to work with the community not against the community. Go after the real criminals, the ones that hang out at 7-eleven on Edinger.

Alright, pendejo don't cry calling 911 when a murderer or rapist is coming your way. The officer was doing his job. If the person has a problem with the officer, he or she can submit a complaint form in their website or call ACLU (Communists).

the problem with this video, IMO, is the guy's back talk.  Everything he was doing is will within rights.  BUT, the cop could have done something and blamed the guy for not following his orders.

USA is the only western civilization country where police behaves like if in a dictatorship. They can kill unarmed men and nothing hapens! Most US citizens are completely unaware of this because have never left their country, but when an outsider spends some time there, fraks out! The LA riots happened more than 20 years ago and we are still in the same page.

Being one of the world's leading experts on OC law enforcement corruption and criminality (at great personal expense) you have just seen on display one of their most finely honed skills: deliberately creating problems for people where there was never a problem to begin with. A skill mastered so completely that one gets the impression that it's been practiced for oh let's say 150 years.

Mr. Juarez - firstly, do yourself a huge friggin' favor by eliminating the hugely annoying and irritating "music" from the video. You're doing yourself absolutely no favors with that. Secondly, next time, make it two people with cameras. The second one filming what happens to the first - and vice-versa. Much more effective. Another thing ... the more intelligent and legal-sounding questions you ask the fellas in blue, the more confused they get. Making for better cinema verite. Remember, they didn't join the police force after dropping out of an Ivy League school ...

Every encounter you have with REVENUE PRODUCERS of the
"State"...Document, Document, Document! So when you make it to "City
Court", to address the "City Judge" to defend yourself against the "City
Cop" that forced you there to begin with, you can have a"Fair
Trial"...Wait for it! www.Nvnc.org

We had better disarm quickly so these fine civil servants can be left in charge of our protection.  If you support gun control then you support leaving your safety in the hands of people like this.

Honestly, if the dude wouldn't of been such a smart ass to the cop by the way he was addressing someone with authority, he might not have gotten harassed at the end of the deal...cope even told him that he could film, just stay a few feet back......wtf is so wrong with the cop saying that? I'm not saying he's wrong for standing his ground but learn to address someone properly...he called them pigs....c'mon...you can't be taken seriously if you are acting like a schmuck.

Maybe the people of Santa Ana should get jobs of their own and stop recording other people working? Wouldn't it piss you off if someone was recording you while you worked and they weren't hmm? lul

Legality doesn not necessarily guarantee that you won't get hassled. There's the rub.

@fc2479 , u keep a community safe by working with the community not against them. Some cops are just plain bullies with a badge who have no patience and do not take the time to explain themselves. It's our community, try working with us not against us.

@FFranco80 If the officer was simply "doing his job" then he should not worry about anyone videotaping him in action. As I understood the article, Children had been complaining about police harassment, Which is NOT their job. Complaining about police abuse on a website is useless, but recording abuse and reporting it Via news media is effective. I am curious does the F in FFranco stand for Francisco? The Fascist Dictator in Spain from WWII thru 1975? (Fascists/Nazis)

@-paulc- It doesn't matter if the guy talks back. Being an ass and talking back is not a crime, especially if he is doing nothing illegal. As the man is not being detained and not interfering with the investigation, the cops have no way of giving him a lawful order.

There is not much tax money coming out of Santa Ana... please don't kid yourself. I guess i should specify income tax.

@Joe Provino When I listened to the video clip I did not hear this individual use any impolite language. Just because he knows what to say and what to reply is why he angered the local gestapo.

Dweezle
Dweezle

@Katie Pyle How do you know this individual does not have a job?

Perhaps I would be pissed off if someone was video taping me abusing my authority as a civil servant. If I was simply doing my job, I would not care. Numerous individuals that recorded the incident with a certain schizophrenic at a bus station in Fullerton is the only reason 2 Fullerton bullies are awaiting trial for murdering that man. This is why law enforcement is leery of being photographed.
