Santa Ana Police say they got a call just before 2 a.m. this morning about a man with a gun in the caller's residential garage near North Gunther Street and Morningside Avenue.

John Berry Horton, 43, pointed a .44 magnum revolver at arriving officers and, after refusing orders to drop his weapon, was shot twice in the upper torso by the cops, police said.

The Santa Ana resident who, according to CBSLA.com, may have had something to do with the residence (like owning, living or staying there), underwent surgery at UCI Medical Center in Orange and is expected to survive, according to police.

Horton was on parole for a narcotics violation, the agency added.

The officer-involved shooting with be investigated by the Orange County District Attorney's office, as is routine, as well as Santa Ana Police's own homicide and internal affairs divisions.
