Huell Howser, California TV Legend, Passes Away :-(

Categories: OC Media
Huell-Howser_150.jpg
Huell Howser--a California broadcasting legend for his various shows that have appeared on public broadcasting over the past couple of decades--has passed away, according to sources who spoke to the Weekly on condition of anonymity.

The news will come as a shock to his legions of fans, all who were puzzled when Howser announced his retirement late last year, as Howser still seemed to have the enthusiasm and energy that made him so easy to parody--and so beloved to millions of Californians.

In the past couple of years, Howser has forged a connection with Chapman University, donating all his papers and videos of his shows and even a house he owned out in the desert.

Details of his passing are currently unknown. More--much more--as more information arises...in the meanwhile, here's my remembrance of Howser.

I was shocked and very sad to hear of his passing.  I watched him every day and he seemed like part of the family.  He will be missed.  My prayers are with the family.

I was so happy when I heard the news that I went for a vacation outside the country and sang "The witch is dead."

I had the privilege to meet Huell once when he was doing a story on some to-do in Redlands, California. Very warm and genuine. He was just as enthusiastic about everything as he was when he was on camera. I asked him about a story he did about the "Bridge to Nowhere" in San Gabriel Canyon. I had hiked the 4 1/2 miles to get there a few years before. I asked him if he had helicoptered in. He said "Oh, GOODness NO! We'all WALKED!" The way he said it was 100% Huell. You will never be forgotten.

So very sad beyond words. Mr. Howser has been a part of our families quality time together for decades. Will miss so very much your gentle way of bringing all of us together in California. God bless and Godspeed sir, you will be missed.

Thank you Huell, you took us on many adventures across our state. The funny thing is, most of time we never left our living room. May the Lord bless your soul.

Wow how very sad..I was just watching him last night on KCET and thinking how embarressing his lack of preparation could be for the interviewee but how awesome his enthusiasm and genuine concern and empathy was for the subject and other people...go gently into that good night friend..

NNNNOOOOOOO! Even though I coveted his gig for the past decade, I loved this man with all my heart. Lotsa funny "off camera" stories. The closest I was ever to him physically was at the after party for a nude contortionists' performance. I was sweating bullets but I didn't want to bother him while he was "off the clock." You know in real life his voice was like three octaves lower... such a sad day.

Awful. I remember watching him on KCET when his little vignettes were called "Videolog." His shows always reminded why I was proud to be a native Californian.
