Gustavo on KCRW: Why OC Needs More Black People!

Thumbnail image for kcrw_logo.jpg
If you've read me enough over the years--and of course you have! Ustedes love me so with your hilarious hating!--you'll know that one of Orange County's sins that embarrass me the most is the atrocious lack of African-Americans 'round here. As I've written before, out of the top 25 metropolitan areas in the United States, OC is the only one with an African-American community of less than 5 percent--and we're at 2.2 percent, according to the 2010 Census. Hey, at least that's better than our 2 percent from 2000, right?

I talked about this fact this Monday, on my latest "Orange County Line" for KCRW-FM 89.9.

The topic was OC resolutions for 2013, and I guess I should've had a long list--but the African-American bit just bugs me so. As I note for my second resolution, until we're a county that accepts everyone, we're going to be no better than Bakersfield. Shit, even San Bernardino is better than us in this regard--and they're bankrupt.

Anyhoo, the commentary!

Who cares??? Why does it matter how many blacks live in OC? Why don't you report on something that actually matters? Why don't you spread awareness on the thousands of children that are living in hotels across the county with nothing to eat because their parents are dope fiends? Or maybe even rally up all your compadres to do something about it?

I hope that someday you wake up and quit using the OC weekly as a platform for your racial agendas, police or political figure bashing and smut! There are a hundred different ways that you could be sharing positive messages and raising awareness to things that actually matter and need to be addressed and changed but instead you write filth and spread rumors and gossip..... I word sums it up... PATHETIC!

what a disappointment.....

Perhaps Gustavo was right - kind of "if you build it they will come." Not a baseball field, but a new Popeye's Chicken is slated for west First St. In Santa Ana.

Mars49 wrote me saying: "actually, from personal observation, my response is quite accurate. How is it ignorant?"

Statistics show that 3 million people live in Orange County, CA. According to the 2010 Census, 2.2% of the OC population is African American (black). Are you saying 66,000 black people go to Popeyes on 17th and Grand, or are you intentionally making a stereotypical and racist comment?

I think the census takers are not counting all the OC blacks - they should stop by the Popeye's Chicken at 17th & Grand in Santa Ana.

So you're saying you don't like to play "Spot the Black Guy" when visiting places such as South Coast Plaza?

Actually - I am NGCoot (I don't know where mars49 came from) - but my comment was intended as an observation of fact.  Do you have a problem with facts?  The fact is there are many black people who like Popeye's Chicken and by my personal observation there is a proportinally greater number of blacks at Popeye's Chicken than I see at McD's, Taco Bell or Subway in my neighborhood.

Blacks like Popeye's Chicken - period. If you think that is a racist comment then that is YOUR problem - not mine.  BTW - I like Popeye's Chicken - go there at least once a week.

@NGCoot Your response is ignorant, at best.

@mars49 Are you really stating in this public forum that you have personally observed or witnessed a significantly higher number of blacks that eat at Popeye's, which therefore, somehow proves the statisticians wrong about the number or percentage of blacks in OC? Further, are you suggesting that more blacks go to Popeye's at a higher frequency than McDonald's in your community? If both of these observations are true, I recommend that you challenge the Census data. If these are your facts, so be it. This information is critical. Moreover, it's important that you change your eating habits. It seems there needs to be better food selections in your community (17th and Grand). More to the point, it's okay to admit that you were being silly with your very irresponsible comment. The purpose of Mr. Arellano's interview spot was to ENCOURAGE blacks to live in Orange County. Irresponsible statements like yours don't help matters at all.

"Are you really stating in this public forum that you have personally observed or witnessed a significantly higher number of blacks that eat at Popeye's" - Yes, a significantly higher percentage of blacks eat at Popeye's - why not? - it is the best chicken around!

"which therefore, somehow proves the statisticians wrong about the number or percentage of blacks in OC? - No, I did not make that correlation.

"are you suggesting that more blacks go to Popeye's at a higher frequency than McDonald's in your community? - Yes, why not? Popeye's is much better food than McD's.

"If both of these observations are true, I recommend that you challenge the Census data." - No correlation, therfore no need to contact the CB.

"it's okay to admit that you were being silly with your very irresponsible comment" - no sillier than Gustavo calling for more blacks in OC (they will move here if they want to - not because GA sent an invitation) and certainly not irresponsible.
