Which would you choose: finish eighth in a 12-candidate race for three city council seats or plead guilty to driving drunk?

Huntington Beach Planning Commissioner Tim Ryan does not have to make that Sophie's choice as he's now experienced both.

Ryan, who was popped by Huntington Beach Police in January, pleaded not guilty in May to driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and having a blood alcohol content (BAC) level above the legal limit of 0.08.

But, as part of a plea deal and on behalf of his client, Ryan's attorney entered a guilty plea to   the BAC count. In exchange for having the DUI charge dropped, Ryan was fined $2,000 and ordered to attend a first-offense alcohol program.

There are, of course, plenty of places on Main Street to toast a successful completion.
