Cal State Fullerton graduate Tim Carpenter--a longtime, popular liberal activist in Orange County before moving to Massachusetts--is calling on Democrats to resist Republican attempts to shortchange middle class and low income Americans in advance of the federal government's so-called looming "fiscal cliff."

Carpenter, who is nowadays the national director of Progressive Democrats of America, recently appeared in a broadcast of lefty theRealnews.com to push for more federal stimulus spending.

"It's time to protect Social Security," said Carpenter, who addressed the 1992 Democratic National Convention and has worked on campaigns for Jesse Jackson, Jerry Brown and Dennis Kucinich. "It's time to roll back the Bush tax cuts. It's time that we get on with the work to not only help the middle class but deal with those folks that have been impacted by the severe budget cuts that we've already faced. It's time for a job stimulus. It's time to put money into the economy and not cut it."

Rep. Jim McGovern (D-MA) appears on the broadcast to argue that reducing the nation's nuclear arsenal "saves billions, billions and billions of dollars" without jeopardizing national security.

Liberals worry that President Barack Obama will cave to GOP pressure to approve massive cuts to federal entitlement programs like Medicare and Medicaid.
