If so, alternatives do exist. There is, of course, the annual social network sharing by activists of the article by University of Austin, Texas Professor of Journalism Robert Jensen explaining why he no longer celebrates Thanksgiving -- not even in a redefined manner.
After Jensen raises the question "once we know, what do we do?," he wrote then of wishing he had the option of "participating in a public event that resists Thanksgiving."
Well, for naranjeros, there is just that...
For the fourth year in a row, The American Indian Movement of Southern California, Colectivo Tonantzin, and the Mexica Movement will gather for an anti-Thanksgiving protest and lecture event in SanTana. Presenters include Corine Fairbanks of AIM, Citlalli Citalmina Anahuac speaking on women's resistance since 1492 and Scott Keltic Knot doing his best to present a counter-narrative to the holiday.
A roundtable discussion will follow rounding the event's activities out. Here's to guessing there won't be any turkey, mashed potatoes or pumpkin pies served!
The Southern California American Indian Movement, Colectivo Tonantzin, and the Mexica Movement present the 4th Annual Anti-Thanksgiving Protest/Lecture at El Centro Cultural de Mexico,313 N. Birch Street, Santa Ana. Thurs. 11:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
