Matt Cunningham, Discredited Blogger/Pedo-Priest Protector Apologist, Now "Blogging" About Anaheim Politics

Cunningham: Outed sex-abuse victims
Well isn't this nice: after spending a couple of years in his Orange lair refraining from day-to-day blogging so he can suck from the government teat he so loves to bash, the reprehensible Matt "Jerbal" Cunningham has decided to reenter the Orange County political blogosphere to blog about my beloved hometown of Anaheim, a city in which he doesn't live in nor he gives a shit about other than whether he can make some money off of us one way or another.

And you know the GOP is desperate to win in this city when they dust off this discredited pendejo.

Cunningham, for those of you not familiar with OC politics, is a longtime GOP hack who started OC Blog, the county's first truly popular political blog, in 2004. He wrote under the pseudonym "Jubal," which allowed him to congratulate himself by Jubal saying Cunningham wrote a good piece on another blog, a pathetic circle jerk we exposed and that he's been whining about ever since (shortly after that piece came out, Jubal asked me via email why were were picking on him--this was back in the days when we got along. He once also called Moxley in a panic after I left a cryptic comment referring to the days when he went to our former editor, Will Swaim, to get Mox fired--good times!).

People tolerated Cunningham for his hackery because it was so entertaining to watch, but he lost all credibility for anything in 2007, when he decided to stick up for John Urell, the priest who protected numerous pedophile priests in his leadership capacities for the Catholic Diocese of Orange. Cunningham's excuse for turning his political blog over to church matters was that Urell--his then-priest at St. Norbert in Orange--was a good man who was being demonized by the press, but his love for the pedophile protector was such that he outed sex-abuse victims of the priests Urell protected, a move so stupid that Cunningham himself eventually apologized (in fact, one of those victims was a man Cunningham personally knew. Um, AWKWARD...)

Here is a man so reviled by anyone with a conscience that all aspects of the Right have blasted him--from the lunatic fringe (The John and Ken Show) to libertarians (Reason magazine) to the one good Republican in all of Orange County (Allan Bartlett) to even mainstream Republican hacks (the guys over at the OC Political blog). Yet Cunningham has the gall to write in his introductory post last month that "those blogging here oppose...efforts to turn Anaheim into something it isn't, and want to support those individual and issues representing what made Anaheim a great city."

"Those"? It's only him that's blogging. "Efforts"? He can't stand Save Anaheim blogger (and our paper's Best Blogger for this year) Jason Young. "Support"? It's hacks like councilwoman Kris Murray and council candidate/dirty cop Steve Lodge, to whom Cunningham donated $150 back in January. Now the only question remains what Cunningham is gaining from blogging about Anaheim, because this pendejo doesn't do anything for free.

Congrats, Greg Diamond! You're no longer the stupidest blogger in Orange County!

Matt Cunningham, I have read the articles from Jason Young and their full of shit. You are right, this clown (Gustavo Anal) is like a whining little girl who never stops until he gets his way. Be careful, Matt. Gustavo might censor you like he did to James Reade who happen to exercise his freedom of speech and then Whiny Little Gustavo censored him like Joseph Stalin. No surprise from a pendejo paisa from the shittiest side of the city. Gustavo man up, take it like a little girl.

In response to Gustavo’s public spanking here, Matt Cunningham ran home and “kicked the dog” by re-posting a previously ignored "report" based on despicable half-truths about a private individual.   His finger pointing reminds me of when my boys were little, and when caught breaking house rules would whine about what the other sibling was up to.

Matt’s attack on Save Anaheim’s Jason Young should chill every one of us to the bone. Jason is not a public figure, he is a private party exercising his right to evaluate the candidates during an election. While he has expanded his coverage to include other candidates such as Steve “Chavez” Lodge, his primary focus remains Jordan Brandman, who apparently is the subject of Matt Cunningham’s assignment. Hey Matt, get in there and protect Jordan. Jordan is not only a candidate for Anaheim City Council, he is already elected to office as a Trustee with the Anaheim Union High School District, and therefore he is a public figure. Jason’s scrutiny, if it is truthful and accurate, is entirely appropriate. I would daresay it is our responsibility to examine our public servants. (and yes, I understand that as a Board Member for a special district, Matt will now subject ME to examination next. Bring it.)

I have found NOTHING in Jason Young’s writings that were not factually correct. Jordan did support the TOT deal at the Gardenwalk, as he will proudly tell anyone who asks. He did defer developer fees for projects not yet completed in the school District. He does maintain friendships with the Chamber/Resort crowd such as Curt Pringle, Kris Murray, Carrie Nocella, etc.

Jason Young has factually reported on a public figure during an election, using his own money. Matt questions the ability of a mere “wedding videographer” to afford such expenses. Jason just shot my daughter’s wedding (which is how we became friends) and let me tell you, he is the best in the business, and charges accordingly. He is also worth every nickel we spent and I would gladly share the quality of that video with anyone who wants the link. So a childless, two income couple working at the top of their career capacity while renting a smallish (nice place but affordable) studio apartment has plenty of disposable income. Jason has chosen to spend his savings trying to educate voters about what he sees as an extreme danger in electing leadership too closely tied to special interests, and frankly I share his fears, and admire his courage in getting out there and saying what he does. Plenty of people will bitch, very few get off their butts and do something, and even fewer will spend that kind of money. The world would be a better place if we had more Jasons in it.

Love him or hate him, you cannot deny that Jason Young is merely exercising his rights as an American citizen to speak his mind, while saying nothing untrue, slanderous, or defamatory. So when Matt Cunningham chooses to retaliate, not by defending his candidate’s stand on the issues Jason has questioned, but by digging into Jason’s past and dragging out long-dead half truths relating to a retail purchase with a past romantic partner (yeah, you do the math and figure out where that went sideways) it should terrify every one of us “citizen journalists” who use our keyboards to try making our communities a better place.

If Matt Cunningham’s attack dog for hire behavior continues to be condoned by his clients, and the reading public, we encourage this most extreme form of bullying.  Matt seems to defend his clients by intimidating the "other side",  whether he is sharing the names of sex abuse victims in defense of a Catholic priest, or defending the other Pringle candidate by insinuating that I have committed a felony, or “reporting” less than the whole story about the past of a private party-and then posting the link to that blog entry at the website of that young man’s business website, and disclosing the location of the man’s home. None of it is the work of a credible professional with any level of industry ethics or integrity.

Who is Matt Cunningham’s client? Well we do not know that yet, I have not found anyone willing to claim him on their IE forms, and can you blame them? I would not want anyone to know I had paid that hack either. Perhaps Matt is bartering professional services, trading his keyboard for the luxury office space he enjoys at Curt Pringle and Associates, where he has moved from his previous digs at “Suite C.” Sooner or later the IE will turn up, because otherwise it could be perceived as an in-kind donation to those campaigns he is defending. Unlike many of the rest of us, Mr. Cunningham has established a pattern of blogging for hire on behalf of specific clients, and at a set rate which has been publicly disclosed,  a rate which he has defended as fair and reasonable. $200 an hour can add up fast if one is watching an unreported IE or in kind donation to a candidate campaign. How much blogging does it take to exceed the cap on in kind donations in Anaheim? Someone needs to disclose their independent expenditure to Matt Cunningham’s bank account. And when they do, they get to enjoy the same hot seat.

Because Matt’s special brand of bully journalism needs to end. Now.

I'm curious as to who Matt's backers are for this blog.  He's obviously getting paid, as Lord knows he's never done a thing in his life if there wasn't a dollar in it for him somewhere.  But I can't help but feel that his paymasters are being had, as he produces yet another inside-baseball navel gazer where he obsessively analyses the campaign mailers that normal people just throw away and combs the Form 460s for AMAZING FACTS (please, tell us again how much cash John Leos has on hand ... zzzzzzzzzzzz).

"(The John and Ken Show) to libertarians (Reasonmagazine) (The John and Ken Show) to libertarians (Reasonmagazine) "

I'd put John and Ken's listenership numbers (1.2 million weekly) against those who read Reason (50,000 subscribers) [sic] any day, so who's the lunatic fringe? And the funny thing is, J & K make their money in the actual market place, whereas reason is subsidized by a foundation (and you and me, seeing as how foundations are tax exempt).

Anyway we can get these two morons to eat each other?

Somebody come up with a way to get Greg over there and let them destroy each other with their pontificating bullshit.

I have some ideas, but they are not fit to print.

"Those blogging here oppose?" Wait! Did he just turn HIMSELF into the straw man?

Mr. Cunningham has used bullying tactics (blogging, strong-arming clients, etc) to attempt to silence his opponents for years. Fortunately, the public and the "establishment" have seen through him. And fortunately, many of his "opponents" - innocent victims of sexual abuse - have gone on to thrive despite his efforts to expose, impoverish and humiliate them.

Hopefully his blog will get the traffic it deserves - zero. And thank you for not linking to it here.

@FFranco80 Figures you would praise a psycho (Reade) and defend a psycho (Cunningham). I didn't censor shit; I told Reade very basic instructions that he refused to follow. When he learns to act like a big boy, I'll stop his time-out.

Joelle: I am sorry for what happened to you at Mater Dei, but being a victim is not a license to be dishonest and say execrable things about others, such as when you wrote in a blog comment that I am a danger to my daughters (whom you have never met and about whom you know nothing). That was a despicable, untrue thing to say, and I doubt you gave it a second thought as you typed it out. Honestly, I read your above comment and wonder if you really believe the untrue crap  you are writing? That would, in a way, be even more unsettling.

"Strong-arming clients"? Did you just make that one up off the top of your head?

"..despite his efforts to expose, impoverish and humiliate them"? Really? I have made no such effort -- that's fantasy on your part. In fact, one victim approached me for assistance on an issue, and was grateful for the hep I was able to provide. But that doesn't play into your narrative.

Again, I am sorry for what happened to you. I really am. But it doesn't excuse your own bullying behavior.

@mcunningham @jcasteix Matt calling someone a bulky is like Urell calling himself a victim. Both of those cretins deserve each other.

I never said you were a danger to your daughters. I said that I feared they would not fell safe to come forward to you if were abused, since you had defended John Urell and others so vehemently.

I'm glad that you helped a victim. If you would a like a list of counselors in southern California who are specialized in treating victims of child sexual abuse, I can forward it to you.

@mcunningham  @jcasteix "You do not know me, nor my wife, nor my family. You know nothing about us."Actually we do know something about you and your opportunistic wife.  Both of you are pigs that like to eat from the taxpayer trough. We know that you like to rail on the about limited government in your pathetic attempts at blogging but then you turn around and take funds from the taxpayer in your employment with the Children and Families Commission.   Now excuse me while I get ready for another day at work tomorrow.  The Cunningham family is depending on me!

 @jcasteix

Let me refresh your memory, Joelle. This is what you wrote in 2010 on Orange Juice Blog:

"I can do little more than fear for Mr. Cunnningham's children. Anyone who defends molesters, outs victims, criticizes survivors who dare to demand accountability, and lives in complete and utter denial is feeding his children to the wolves. I pity him."

You do not know me, nor my wife, nor my family. You know nothing about us. And yet you let loose with that reprehensible cocktail of venom, lies and misrepresentations. Again, your having been victimized is not an excuse to telll lies, twist the truth or make despicable, ignorant statements like you did about my family.
