Unidentified Male, OC Homicide No. 16: Shot in Underground Garage
'Walk for Peace' Today Against Violence to Happen in Santa Ana
At the DL: Mexicans fight Mexicans over a dirt lot that might one day become a park
Police received a call around 1:30 a.m. May 8 of shots fired and a male down at an apartment complex in the 500 block of East Pine Street, near Oak Street, in Santa Ana. There, in the underground garage, a man later identified as Ugalde was found with a gunshot wound to his upper body. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
While gang and homicide investigators had little to go on, the recent shootings of Ugalde and other teens and young men in Santa Ana spurred committee members of Santa Ana Building a Healthy Community to conclude a message had to be delivered straight to neighborhood families that such violence cannot be tolerated. The "Walk for Peace" was aimed at delivering that message. The safety of schoolchildren is of particular importance because so many shootings are near campuses.
Santa Ana Police have not revealed why Alvarez is a suspect or what motivated the shooting, other than to say he is a gang member, as was Ugalde, apparently. The booking photo would suggest Alvarez has been jailed before. A reward of up to $50,000 is being offered to anyone who helps in his capture and arrest.
