Dear Anaheim Cholos: Stop Shooting Each Other And Screwing It Up for the Rest of the City's Mexicans

firing-gun_150.jpg
Dear Anaheim cholos:

You don't know me since few of you read the Weekly (for some bizarre reason, most of you read the Orange County Register as evidenced by your many comments over there), but I probably know your older brothers, cousins, or maybe even fathers--the previous generations of the gangs that passed through Sycamore Junior High and Anaheim High during the 1990s, the last time there was a big wave of gang violence in my beloved hometown. I get why you click--turf, respect, raza, blah blah blah.

But here's the problem: your throwdowns with each other are fucking it up for the rest of the city's Mexicans, at a time when they can't afford it. And if you fuck it up for them, you're going fuck yourselves for good in a way that makes the rape scene in American Me seem as pleasant as pruno.

Here's the background for non-cholos: for the past couple of years, gangs in Anacrime have escalated their turf wars, targeting innocents but mostly each other. Anaheim police have responded in kind, with arrests, raids, and more than a few killings of said cholos--some supposedly warranted (police claim suspect aimed a gun), most not (most of the killings involved suspects who were unarmed). All of this blew up this summer, of course, with riots involving a whole bunch of folks for various reasons, and the subsequent national attention.

But while one would assume that you cholos would keep some sort of truce under intense scrutiny by cops and a Latino community tired of their shit, the opposite has happened: you can't stop shooting each other with impunity, especially around my old neighborhood near Thomas Jefferson Elementary. Coker reported on a 14-year-old killed two weeks ago, a 14-year-old cops say was a cholo, and there was just another shooting around that area this past Friday--and this came on the heels of two officer-involved shootings in the same area involving gang members. All in October.

steve_chavez_lodge.jpg
Lodge: The real enemy, cholos, not yourselves. Hit him up by voting!
Now, I know a lot of Anaheim Mexicans who are cheering ustedes on--they want you to kill yourselves off and leave the city for good. I'm not one of those, because I'm a raging liberal who cares for everyone (which makes me, as one of you called me when I once jumped in to save a kid from being beat up from three of you, a "fucking faggot"). But here's the problem: you shooting each other is scaring voters into going for the candidate who promises to crack down on ustedes as hard as possible. And that candidate is some vendido named Steve Lodge.

The last thing any Mexican--or anyone, for that matter--needs in this city is Lodge. He's problems for cholos, because he's promising to eradicte ustedes, which makes him popular for all the gabachos and Mexicans scared of cholos. But he's also a problem for those gabachos and Mexicans, because Lodge is a dirty cop who's favored by a bunch of corrupt assholes. And Lodge is already using ustedes to exploit scared voters into voting for him--every time you go after each other, you convince more people to side with Lodge. And if Lodge gets elected, heaven help all of Anaheim--and you're going to have beef with way more people than each other and the pigs.

So...stop shooting each other. I'd say stop shooting each other for good, but that'll probably never happen--so can you at least stop shooting each other until after the election? Yeah, you hate BST or AVLS, or Travelers, or Westside, or CST, or Lopers--oh, wait, that last one's SanTana. But we can't have your kind fuck it up for the rest of the city's Mexicans--not ever, of course, but especially not right now. If you can stop shooting each other for a week, I promise to call into Art Laboe's show and dedicate "Smile Now, Cry Later" to ustedes--or even "18 With a Bullet." Deal?

Gustavo "El Mamon", you make me laugh. You swear cholos and cholas would be wasting their time reading from the OC Weekly. Besides, they only know to speak slang and the writing is to advance for them to read. There so ignorant and machistas. Next time, try graffiti.

Im an educated Mexican who has cousins who are cholos (who are in jail) including one who tried to kill my uncle (his dad).  It would be great if we had harsher laws and could just kill them all.  Gang members should be eradicated as soon as possible.  I am in my mid 20s and used to live in Santa Ana last year with a few friends, one day I was with a girl I was dating and a roommate watching a movie upstairs, we heard a noise downstairs and glass break, we heard voices so I grabbed my AR-15 and gave my roommate my .22 m4.  We went downstairs and one of them had a knife, he saw my rifle and took off saying oh shit, I slept with my gun the next few nights and asked for police patrols in our area, I moved to Irvine to get away from all that BS even though there are no taquerias in the area.  I pray that Steve Lodge does in fact get rid of them.

This is the most ungrateful immigration wave ever. Why are we stuck with these scumbags. Their entire families should be deported if a single member is a gang member. Imagine how nice going to school would be if there were no gang members? These guys have no interest in school or being American. WE WERE TOLD THEIR PARENTS JUST CAME HERE TO WORK...WELL GUESS WHAT, THEY DEPOSITED THOUSANDS OF GANG MEMBERS IN OUR CITIES.

I agree with OGBravo1. You offer no alternative. You're simply disrespecting these guys. I hate to see that type of violence tambien but not with the approach that you bring.  If you're such a power house in the OC, why don't you call a meeting of truce with the "cholos" or are you one of those mexicans who had drank the I'm scared of you kool-aid? Call a pinche meeting instead of bad mouthing "cholos". Afterall, they aint going nowhere.  If your individualistic approach to "success" is all you can offer, then, thats where the problem lies. Obviously you dont know any of the microagressions that occur in schools, the streets, and other segments of society that criminalize our youth which contributes to leading a cholo environment. And dont come at me with that bullshit,"If I did it, why cant you". Thats the same discourse that is presented in schools and the media to begin with. Do your pinche homework pinche sellout, vendido. Cholo's or not, they are segments of our society whom which we have to work with.

it sucks that what they lack in intelligence they make it up by picking up a gun... heck even my little sister who is 14 has picked up a gun ( only at the gun range)  but if she is able to pick one up and shoot it guess it does say a lot when a cholo picks one up...... kiddy cat

This has been a problem in Pomona since my mom was kid living on 12th St.  Unfortunately it's one the City has never been willing to try and seriously address.  I still remember watching the rioting two blocks from my home after the PD decided to execute an arrest warrant while the two major gangs in the city were trying to workout a truce at Sharky (or Sharkie if you prefer) Park.  After that my parents decided it was time to throw in the towel on Pomona.

I'm going to immodestly take a tiny bit of credit for this cri de couer (or sea, grito del corazon) from our querido Klavito. By emphasizing that Mexicans have killed an infinite more number of Mexicans in OC than the Klan has -- because the Klan didn't kill any, I have forced el patrón to, you know, get out of the 1920s and into the 21st century. Shit, I'll bet even in the 1920s more Mexicans in OC were killed by other Mexicans than the Klan ever dreamed about.

Gus, cholos don't read.  They think it's for pussies.  Maybe instead of trying to reach them , you should aim for their chiflada GFs, or the  ones they haven't impregnated yet.  Sigue la reconquista.

Honestly, you end an impassioned, reasoned plea by referring to the police as "pigs?" Ultimately, you really are part of the problem Gustavo.

I hope since you have such a passionate opinion on what Cholos should do , that you are directly involved on in some type of  anti-youth/gang violence organizing in your community. Based on your condescending toned request on this article I will take a good guess and assume that you don’t.

If your message was really heartfelt and sincere, what is the likelihood that “Cholos” will be reading this article? In this publication? Second,  even if there were a substantial amount of Cholos that did read this what is the likelihood that they would respond positively to such sarcastic and condescending words?  Seems to me you don’t care too much, because if you sincerely did you would put forth your request in a better way and through a more effective channel to reach those you are trying to sway, of course if that really is your goal which it doesn't seem like to me.

The cholos don't care. They will just blame "whitey" for all their problems and keep curbing dope and shooting everyone that doesn't have their gang's placa tattooed across their chest (or on their hand at least).

All the good Americans that are of Hispanic descent they'll just continue to label "coconuts" for loving this nation and culture more than the failed ones they left to become Americans.

I take my hat off to you "coconuts" and welcome you. I've been proud to serve with you in the military, work with you on the jobsites, and live with you as neighbors.

To all you "cholos," you can to go straight to hell for destroying this once Golden State.

@Lobo First off, it ain't "the OC." Secondly, when did I advocate an individualistic approach? And me, a powerhouse? Since when? "Microagressions"? Please. All you and your ilk offer are excuses. And I don't disrespect shit—unlike you, I know where these youngsters come from, but that doesn't mean I'm going to cheer them on as they slaughter each other.

They were called the "Sharkies" back then. They used to go at it with some oakie gang. You can see a film on YouTube about it called Gang Boy Pomona 1954: http://youtu.be/f8Vq40hwQFM

But the oakies grew up and left their gang to become law abiding hard working adults who raise their kids, like all the rest of the white gangs of the 1950s did, and we haven't heard another word from them since.

But the Sharkies, of course, like all the other worthless Hispanic gangs just stayed perpetual scumbags and passed it on.

I read a wannabe scumbag murdered a police officer outside of the Pomona courthouse trying to impress the 12th street scumbags a number of years ago.

@ogbravo1 Actually, I've been involved in youth mentoring in one way or another since high school, because I actually care. But almost everyone else in Anaheim wishes cholos would just off themselves once and for all, so I suggest you don't get offended by me and figure out how cholos can get out of their problems—and don't blame it on society, 'cause I know a lot of Mexicans who grew up side-by-side with the homeboys and came out fine.

@GustavoArellano  @FFranco80 The "gangster" shown is from Pico Rivera, and as far as being smart... wasn't he the one who was convicted of murder because of his tattoos depicting the crime scene?

And Gus, don't attack me. I enjoyed your cooking segment on Chelsea Lately

FFO1939

 @GustavoArellano

Really? If so, how come they are killing each other? Plus, they have no sets of value and moral when it comes down on an innocent bystander who gets between the shoot-out and stealing them of their hard earned cash to feed their drug habit. I don't hear them saying "timeout fu, innocent person passing by" or "let’s handle business somewhere else". But no, they are a bunch of jotos who will jump a rival with 5 gang members. What happened being a man? But noooo, they can't man up!! Do me a favor, draw them a mural to make it a simple approach to them regarding on reaching out your message. They are considered a nuisance to society and your article is futile, you can't tame animals. The only way, they will understand is a nightstick to their mascara. Cry me a river, ex-cholo.

STOPTHERECONQUISTA

@Latinosaregrowing what worries me is that it is now acceptable to define yourself by your race. I was brought up that we're all the same. Now that Latinos are increasing in numbers......it's all of a sudden acceptable to define by race and openly conflict with other races and take what you can get...ie race is power. I don't want to carry a a 'white power' sign just like I don't like seeing 'brown power'. I don't see this immigration wave having any interest in being thankful they're in this country....instead it's a 'take over' mentality. I've heard 'hurry up and die old white people' too many times.

@GustavoArellano  @whhackett3  I actually had a proposal a few years ago that would have cost the city nothing.  We were going to offer no cost training in Aikido to at-risk kids.  My sensei, Francis Takahashi, had some of his instructors lined up.  A childhood friend who'd dropped out of 12th street was ready to serve as an administrator.  All we needed was a place to actually hold the training and two council members who claimed to be supportive just couldn't find a place where we could meet.  They really don't care about Brown on Brown, Brown on Black or Black on Black violence.

ageofknowledge

@GustavoArellano  That's right Gustavo. We all do. I went to Victory Outreach for four years and met probably two thousand ex-gangbangers from barrios all over Los Angeles and Orange County. Some of them were as hard as they come too and, for some reason, those were the ones I personally got along with the best.

I don't have a problem with people who learn from their mistakes, find God, and elevate themselves to join the rest of society as productive members struggling through all of the tough problems as a community we are all going through together.

Our problem is with stuck-on-stupid fools creating serious problems for good people they don't give a squat about and fouling up our society.

ogbravo1
ogbravo1

@GustavoArellano  @ogbravo1  lol. I'm not offended by you bro, just pointing out your condescending tone. Glad you help out your community but I'm curious if you speak to the young Cholo affiliated youth like you do in this article? I wasn't going to blame society.. solely anyway. But since you brought it up, they do play a role, how can they not. And just because some people grow up side by side in the neighborhood doesn't mean they are dealing with the same dynamics. People have different family  lineages with different issues, personalities, and experiences that shape their behavior. All this aside from my initial point that if you were really sincere about making a plea to Anaheim Cholos you would be more skillful in your expression and effort.

ogbravo1
ogbravo1

@GustavoArellano Obviously you dont know what works because I've never seen condescending words be effective in a sincere plea which, obviously, your piece is not. Just cause you have 2 individuals in the same environment doesn't meant these 2 individuals don't  have different family experiences, culture, and personalities eve if they are Mexican or privileged anglos. That effects the equation. Seems your math skills are lacking,  it's not hard to figure out.No excuses for what? People not living up to your or societies standards of success?  One would think after all these years that your skills at satire and  humor would have improved by now., Guess not.

GustavoArellano
GustavoArellano moderator editortopcommenter

@ogbravo1 I think I know my "expression and effort" well enough to know what works and know what doesn't, so I'm fine with what I did. And I've probably spoken to more youngsters in my time than a probation officer, so there you go. As for "dynamics"? Bullshit. I've known people who came from the worst environments and did something of themselves; I know people from privilege that are little better than trash. No excuses.
