Over an 18-day period culminating in Labor Day, 843 people were arrested for driving under the influence, according to Orange County's "Avoid the 38" sobriety task force.

That compares with 856 DUI arrests over the same period last year.

One person died in a DUI-related crash over the 18 days, compared with two in 2011.

The 2012 August/Labor Day Holiday DUI crackdown ran from 12:01 a.m. Friday, Aug. 17,  through midnight Monday, Sept. 3. The 38 task force law enforcement agencies in Orange County held operations that included all or some of these: court stings, saturation patrols, warrant arrests and DUI/drivers license checkpoints. The Orange County Sheriff's Department administers the program.

Authorities note that the figures "are only provisional" as some agencies have not yet reported their totals.

"Avoid the 38" warns that similar anti-DUI enforcement is planned for the Halloween and Thanksgiving seasons. Funding is provided by the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Visit www.californiaavoid.org to learn more.
