Gail Eastman, Anaheim Councilwoman, Credits "God's Hands" With Creating Anaheim Riots So Mayor's Agenda Could be Defeated

Eastman: Dumbest politician since Dornan?
As I said in my essay on Anaheim's Troubles this summer, I've long stayed away from city politics to protect friends and family who work at City Hall from vindictive politicos. Well, thank God city politics are so rotten that they deserve my attention, especially the biddy councilwoman named Gail Eastman.

I previously wrote about her celebrating while Anaheim burned on July during the riots that happened right outside City Hall. Eastman later apologized for those remarks, so I can't wait to see what excuse she's going to offer for a email obtained by the Weekly in which she credits "God's hands" and says "Praise the Lord" for the riots that ensured democracy wasn't practiced in Anaheim that night.

On July 25 just after midnight--just hours after over 1,000 people faced off against cops from Anaheim and other agencies--Eastman sent an email to Bill O'Connell, the developer pendejo who claims that $100 million public subsidies to him will prevent riots from happening in the future. The two of them were happy that night: during that council meeting, Mayor Tom Tait was going to try to place two proposals on the council agenda for a vote--one that would allow Anaheim residents to vote on a multi-million-dollar subsidy to hotel developers (that would've directly affect O'Connell), and another that would've put the issue of creating ward districts for city council elections instead of the current at-large system on the ballot as well. But because of the unrest, Tait had to end the council meeting early, and his efforts failed.

Eastman was ecstatic. "Always looking for the good to come out of the hard times, it seems like Gods [sic] hand in that due to the escalating unrest Tom found himself with no way out but to wind up the meeting with out [sic] a vote on his two proposed ballot measures and those of us against them didn't have to appear to be the bad guys," she wrote to O'Connell (all the atrocious grammar is hers). "All I can say is 'praise the Lord' he can't get either of them on the ballot."

She ended her note to O'Connell with "get cracking and get those hotels built!"

WOW. Hey, Gail: why are you trying so hard to move up in the rankings for our coming Scariest People issue? Are you that dumb, or just naturally pendeja?

Gail Eastman is a nice lady. Jealous people will always say untrue negative things about others. Council member Eastman represents the City of Anaheim very well. James Robert Reade

The problem with Councilwoman Eastman, is that building hotels is not going to take Prostitution and Meth Houses out of the crappy areas of West Anaheim, put Librarians back to work at the Elementary Schools, it's not going to bring the local residents out of poverty, she is not going to change the status quo of Anaheim politics.  There is a long history for Anaheim politicians making a career out of Trustee and Council seats, and it's too bad over that time, they lose the sight of the average person, living in the run down housing tracts, surrounded by people who are really working way too hard for the little money they earn.  And she is happy that all that money is going to build hotels?  That money belongs to the people of Anaheim, and more importantly, to the children of Anaheim.

Ah, so this is what she must have meant with the whole 'In God We Trust' thingy above the city seal.

Cynthia, you're right that Gail really believes that everything she does is what's best for Anaheim. She believes that so strongly that she even thinks God agrees with her. In fact she believes that God creates riots and havoc in order to make her work easier and more painless. THAT's really scary. Religion taken to the extreme of mental illness.

Cynthia the documents were obtained via a public records request. This is the same woman who put "In God We Trust" on Anaheim's city seal. Gail should change it to in Disney we trust. What a piece of work she is.

Please tell me this is an April Fool's joke of some kind? I have known Gail for years, she is not evil, I think she truly thinks she is doing the right thing in supporting the projects she does. But I am beyond disappointed in a consistent pattern of rejoicing that the democratic system has been subverted, regardless of whether it was a riot or hurricane that caused the disruption. What I do wonder is, how did you get a private message between two individuals? I know that Jason posted something from a semi-public message board, sent from multiple sources, but is this a public document that is appropriate for printing? Is that OK to do?

@cynthia241 Cynthia: you know us—if it can be verified as true, we'll print it, private or not. This passed the smell test. Gail ain't evil—just woefully clueless.

@GustavoArellano  @cynthia241 You are right that she is clueless. Building more hotels in Anaheim will only encourage more influx of cheap, unskilled immigrant labor. It's in her long run interest that those hotels *not* be built. It is in Anaheim's long term interest that it get away from such a low value added industry. Any development economist will tell you tourism, beyond a certain point, is a dead end -- and indeed the state of flatland Anaheim proves it.

You're right (for once) - my eyes glaze over at the thought of your standard prolixity assuming a new dimension ...

My comment aimed, obviously, at the extremely tedious ageofwhatever, not the erudite and entertaining Mr. Lieberman ...

@Mitchell_Young  @GustavoArellano  @cynthia241 Funny, Mitch, my taxes are significantly lower because of the tourism in this town. That's a demonstrable effect—my property tax burden went from 1.26% (all told) in Los Angeles to 1.06% here in Anaheim.

Also, Anaheim has a surprisingly large amount of non-tourism industry. Or have you not been to Anaheim Canyon lately? Notice, incidentally, the skilled immigrant labor happening there.

@Mitchell_Young  @GustavoArellano Whoa-whoa-whoa...wait a minute! I did not call Gail clueless. I said I think she genuinely believes these projects she defends are good for the city. I think she is taking bad advice from people who have their own very selfish, financially motivated agendas, but I did not call her clueless. Not sure where this rumor started that I hate Gail's guts (from the same one that says I hate Jordan?) While I am intensely frustrated at their decisions and their choice of words lately, that is as far as it gets.
