Smoking Pot Makes Teens Stupid, Study Says

It''s amazing what science can teach us. According to the Associated Press, researchers in New Zealand have released the results of a study showing that teenagers who regularly smoke pot before their 18th birthday grow up to have lower IQs than those waited until after they turned 18 to start smoking.

Specifically, the study gave IQ tests to a group of 1000 13-year-olds from the same town, and then again 25 years later when they were 38 years old. Between those two tests, they interviewed the subjects at age 18 about their marijuana-smoking habits. Those who stated that they were regular smokers by that age turned out to have an 8-percent drop in IQ by the time they turned 38 years old.

There's nothing earth-shattering about the notion that smoking too much weed can make you stupid. More noteworthy is this apparent fact that came out of the study: the drop in intelligence suffered by chronic teenage pot smokers appears to not have any correlation to whether they stopped smoking pot later in life.

In other words, the brain damage from smoking too young is permanent, although doctors quoted in the AP story claim that anybody who smokes too much pot is at higher risk of memory loss and long-term cognitive impairment. According to the AP, 23 percent of high-school kids regularly smoke pot, making it more popular than cigarettes, which might not make you stupid, but which will kill you, thus ironically making the teens who smoke them objectively stupider than the teens getting stupid smoking weed.

Oh no! My iq is barely over 150, and to think, it could be so much higher if I hadn't smoked that pot when I was a teen! I'm almost certain that it isn't just the pot, our younger generations seem to have the standard iq bar set lower and lower. Wasn't the average iq just at 115? Now its 100.

seriously why is it so hard to accept the fact that taking substances causes damage when your brain isn't developed? Weed is wonderful, but lets not lie to ourselves.

Study smudy.I see a lot of the kids are rejecting this study and research and I don't blame them because in part they are right but for differnt reasons than stated in there post. There are several ways to digest research and studies.. One of the most fam,ous flawed studies is the one of homosexuality where everyone is being sold a bill of goods. I believe that there very well may be a gene envolved in there behavior but in my opion it is a mental health gene.Where do self medicating kids with undiagonesed mental disorders fit into the study.Thank God these kids use marijuana instead of consuming alcohol. Yes it would be nice if everyone didn't have any vises or addictions but in the real world people use recreation drugs. As a christian certified drug and alcohol counselor I deal with people that are addicted to alcohol and or drugs. The site of addiction is not pretty one and anyone smoking 20 times a month is scurting on addiction. That should be this study.  I have always believed in abstance first. I have always believed in pot over alcohol and hard drugs for to many reasons to mentionI have always believed that kids using drugs, drinking and smoking pot are usually indicators of much  more serious problems.                                   Mental health issues and concerns.  This study lacks all perception when it come to mental health issues. The last great discrimination in America is the plight of the mentally ill.   I believe that studies will find that addictive personalities often are signs of mental health issues.  Although I would not discount a lot of the isses in this study. But it  does lacks fiber when it comes to being a complete and accurate study.  I definetly am not condoning smoking pot for children infact I am totally againt it and there are many dangers in what starts out as a ocassional joint to 20 times a month to alcohol to hard drugs to addiction to ruined lifes to prison and death, the end of the line. Dual diagnois is dealing with tyhe  addiction and also the mental health issues.Herein lies the problem and diagnois is relatively simple.  Bipolar can either be inherited or it can be cause by early child hood abuse. The biggest problem with BiPolar is having the disorder and going thru life not knowing that you have it. DEPARTMENT OF MENTAL HEALTH HAS A ONE STOP SHOP 24 HR. GENERAL INFO: LINE FOR LOCAL, STATE AND NATIONAL REFERRALS1-800-854-7771 Los Angeles County but they have other counties numbers.(They can offer referrals and solutions to problems anywhere in the United States) Juvenile Justice studies show that 80% of all Youth Authority commitments suffer from Mental Disabilities. The three (3) most common mental disorders found within prisons in the United States are:1)      A.D.D. (called Attention Deficit Disorder, can’t focus for long periods of time)(See A.D.D. – A.D.H.D. page for details)2)      A.D.H.D. (called Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, the same as A.D.D. except that      you add hyperactivity) 3)      Bi-Polar Disorder. There are many degrees of Bi-Polar, ranging from full blown to provisional                                                   which only crops it’s ugly head once in a while.a.       Pressured Speechb.      Flight of ideas, can’t stop thinkingc.       Grandiosity, doing too much, inflated sense of self-worthd.      Elevated expansive moodse.       Unwarranted optimism, mood-swings from nothing can go wrong to everything going wrongf.        Decreased need for sleep, sleeping 3-4 hrs and waking up feeling refreshed.g.       Increase in goal activity, Workaholic, Sexaholic, excessive involvement in pleasurable                                  activities with painful consequences.h.      Sexual indiscretioni.        Foolish behavior, Las Vegas was founded on people with Bi-Polar Bi-Polar Disorder can be inherited or can be caused by early childhood abuse. This is just another reason why we need to overhaul our disgraceful and abusive County foster care system, this will stop the exodus of children in foster care winding up in mental institutions and or state prisons.  Many professionals in the field of Mental Health believe that it is best to first seek natural and homeopathic herbs before trying prescriptions, because a lot of prescription drugs contain toxins and toxins are harmful to those affected by Bi-Polar. A.D.D. – A.D.H.D. affects millions of children and adults within the United States and is a hereditary disorder found running rampant within the United States prison system. 3-5% of school age children suffer from these disorders and boys run up to a 4 times higher rate than girls, maybe that would explain why there are so many more men than women locked up.    ET SnellClown Community Activistwww.etsnell.comwww.calpra.com,

So for example maybe maybe kids who are not smart (before they even smoked pot) choose to smoke pot earlier OR maybe kids who smoke pot earlier tend to be from lower SES, which could explain lower IQ's.

I also feel it necessary to note that when I googled the title of this post, the only other "studies" that popped up were posted on fox (faux) news. You can't expect any intelligent individual to trust fox! Maybe as a Seattleite I am biased when it comes to marijuana usage, although I rarely use it anymore except for pharma-free cancer relief. It does have its benefits.
