OC Pioneers Who Were Klan Members: Dr. Walter W. Davis, Health Officer for Brea

Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for babyklan.jpg
First off, this column has finally been acknowledged for its nerdy brilliance with an award! The Orange County Press Club awarded me the "Real OC" award--essentially, the story that best tells the essence of Orange County. The panel of judges weren't OC reporters but rather outsiders, so they were reading the column on its merits rather than any reputation, good or bad, that I may have. So guess what, pathetic fanboys? From now and forever more, you gotta call this column "award-winning" because it's the TRUTH. AHAHAHAHA.

Where were we? Ah, yes: our OC pioneer that was Klan. This week, it's Dr. Walter W. Davis of Brea.

Davis was, like many KKK members during the 1920s, a World War I veteran and a doctor. He became the health officer of Brea upon his return, which essentially meant he was in charge of the city's well-being. Being Brea was mostly oil derricks and citrus groves at that time, that meant most of Davis' patients were working-class white wildcatters and Mexican pickers--wonder which client base Davis preferred?

"OC Pioneers Who Were Klan Members" is an award-winning series examining Orange County's sordid Ku Klux Klan past. Tune in every Monday around 5 p.m. for the latest entry exposing OC's city fathers who were Klan members!

Just think, the Klan members were not able to appreciate and live to see the multicultural enrichment of the County through the mug shots you provide every day. Nor could they forecast the wonderful contribution of the Nortenos and Surenos to our civilization, or the shockingly beneficial demographics of Santa Ana.

Pale, male and stale, that's how it was.

Anyone still have their phone number? We could use them.

Commenters - who wrote these words?

"Mentioning that the Klan controlled Anaheim .. is the easy jab people always employ against .. Orange County.. whenever they want to describe us as fundamentally racist. .. The Klan's rise in Anaheim and other cities during the 1920s is well-documented--as a stand by good people against racist terror, an easy narrative to write and honor."

See, while this article points out who USED TO be racist, it even more effectively points out who is NOW racist, a very inflammatory stance.

Advertisers should take note of the blatant racism coming out of the OC Weekly as of late.

"The Orange County Press Club awarded me the "Real OC" award--essentially, the story that best tells the essence of Orange County."

What a bunch of fuckin' losers - there is no "story" there.  All you are doing is posting names from a list and making baseless accusations about people from ages ago.  There is no fuckin' "story."

Based on what you wrote, Gustavo, then I must believe most KKK members in the 1920's were WW1 veterans and physicians. So the AMA in the 1920's and probably for a few more decades was dominated by KKK war veterans. As for the patients Dr. Davis preferred ,I bet all you had to do was infer from your own prejudices, that Davis only cared about while oil wildcatters. How do you do such a great job teasing out the truth from the past. Wow, everyone should personally give you an award for your efforts.

Obongo say: Why to print such a racist article? How racist of this Gustavo person to bring attention to such racism. Is very inflammatory for this day and age.

Who is more racist for this time of civilization??? Gustavo or said past KKK member?

".. wonder which client base Davis preferred?

That is the cutting edge of today's journalism right there folks.

"Davis was, like many KKK members during the 1920s, a World War I veteran and adoctor. He became the health officer of Brea upon his return, which essentially meant he was in charge of the city's well-being. "

Yet another educated man that served his country -- and was in the 2nd klan.

Rethink the paradigm.

@NGCoot You're the loser, old man, for supporting Gary McKnight. You know what? Time to call you what you are: a pedophile apologist, because Mater Dei was filled with them, and your cowardly ass has never done a thing about it.

NGCoot

Better question:

Are there ANY klan members of OC notariety within the last 80 years?

GustavoArellano
GustavoArellano moderator editortopcommenter

@NGCoot While we break news on the Anaheim shooting, you continue to bitch like the typical Mater Dei grad you are, pedo-protector champion.

 @GustavoArellano

you know those racist leaders like Condoleeza Rice and Michael Steele, gosh its obvious by these two political ideologies that they are card carrying members of the KKK

@GustavoArellano The Republicans don't even tacitly act in the interest of the white folks, let alone explicitly supporting us.

@NGCoot Are you really that stupid, or just that old? And like I said earlier, keep bitching like a Mater Dei grad while us Weeklings continue to kick the ass of OC morons such as yourself.

Really - you have evidence of this?  I admire your complete lack of journalistic integrity - it goes to the core.

 @909Jeff Doesn't matter if we're not biased—if we're not writing the whole truth, we're a hack paper.

@909Jeff Silly liberals or not, we're the best damn paper in OC, and our records prove it

@obongobabbahlewee You've yet to make any sense whatsoever—you can do it!

@obongobabbahlewee There is a certain level of ass kissery going on.

But since I've seen you posting quite a bit I'll be clear that while Gustavo and I are about as politically polar opposite as two people can be I appreciate his ability to print his opinions.  I'd like to believe in my own arrogant way that I am a bit of an antagonist to the writers over at the weekly...  Do they wonder wtf will that jackass 909Jeff say when he reads my article? Probably not but one can always dream.

At the end of the day you have to realize that you may not agree with them and their politics but just because they are silly, misguided, liberals doesnt make their opninions moot.

@909Jeff Don't ya just love how Gustabo's butt kissers "like" his comments no matter how pendejo they are?
