OC Pioneers Who Were Klan Members: Roscoe Gulick Hewitt, Former Chairman of the OC Republican Party Central Committee

Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for babyklan.jpg
"Child of father is man," goes that well-worn aphorism, and that was definitely the case for Roscoe Gulick Hewitt. He lived a good-enough life, finding a career as an agent for New York Life Insurance Company and being heavily involved with the Masons in SanTana, his hometown. His self-written biographical capsule in Historical Volume and Reference Books, a 1963 mug-shot history of the county edited by former county supervisor Thomas Talbert, said that Hewitt "believes in the individual responsibility of man," a point he made to describe himself as a "staunch Republican" and the former head of the Orange County Republican Central Committee.

Not written in that history, however, is that Hewitt was a member of the Ku Klux Klan as a young man in the 1920s.

Hewitt, sans the Klan's robe

But it makes sense. Only in the KKK as a young man could Hewitt learn the scorched-earth tactics of the local GOP--and in Hewitt's august days, that would've meant supporting lunatics like Congressman James Utt, among others. No need to say he was Klan AND OC GOP, as that's redundant, you know!

Hewitt is the second former OC GOP Central Committee prez to be outed as a Klan member. Are there more to come? You know it!

Tune in every Monday around 5 p.m. for the latest entry exposing Orange County city fathers who were Klan members!

Prove to your readers you are not a liar. Maybe your fans went to Johnston(clown college) college, but the ones who challenge you graduated from cal state anywheres. Now go fetch, Gustavo

Really? And why would I have to waste hours looking for it? Because it doesn't exist or you would direct me to it from your KKK articles in OC Weekly. since you recently pointed the finger at Hewitt accusing this long-dead person of belonging to the KKK, you must have quick access to proving his membership with a card or roster or something.

As for "lifting a finger" to help me, I am not the one claiming Hewitt was a member of the KKK.

Quit playing games, you and I both know I refer to the years 1900 to 1940's. Why won't you scan at least one piece of a primary document? Rhetorical question, because you don't have proof. Outside of your ignorant fans, people refer to the OC Weekly as O see weakly news and articles.

I've been reading your KKK exposes in the OC weekly for a year and never have I seen a scan of any membership card. As a matter of fact, I have never seen any scan of any document accompanying your scant exposes of OC's 1900's KKK movement. Instead of accusing me of childish hysterics, why don't you direct me to the KKK article that contains the  membership scan. If you are telling me the truth that you did research on the KKK in OC, then you should easily recall this article or the person's name.

You are a liar, no one would be allowed to write on these primary documents held in an archive. Do you know what a primary document is? You may make copies and scribble on them, is that what you are telling me? I challenge you to tell your public precisely where you found your primary documents or scan just one document sans scribble into a future one paragraph expose of KKK membership.

no, I don't want to see what you wrote. I want to see the primary document(s) that told you Hewitt was a member of KuKlux Klan. for you to assert Hewit was a member of the KKK, you must have some proof, an official membership roster, card anything that is not generated from you but from the actual time period Hewitt was alive and supposedly a member of the KKK.

Gee, another race-baiting article... What a fucking little whiner Gustavo is.

I know. Gustavo does not know how to insult correctly, let alone does he have any understanding of journalistic integrity.  His insults come out of his defensiveness and inability to accept constructive criticism. Look at this short comment thread: he hurls insults such as: "pendejo" (his fave insult), "loser," "pedophile" (methinks he is projecting on that one), and "apologist." I see the complaint as accurate that the photo is not from OC. Instead of admitting the photo is indeed not from OC, he must hurl insults like a third grader.

Arellano, why don't you print new insults , you have used these same insults so many times for,so many people for so long , these insults have a robotic quality
