OC Weekly Lays Off Staff Writer :-(

Man, God sure knows how to fuck with you: just one day after dominating the OC Press Club Awards with the type of reporting that led the New York Times to describe us as a "lively journal," the numbers people came to me with something I feared might happen: I needed to lay off a staff writer.

FUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCK :-(

No real mystery as to why: the paper ain't as big as it used to, due to the Great Recession and the Brave New World of digital ads blah blah blah. Worst part was that every single staffer we had is AWESOME, so I had to decide who'd leave by relying on the eternal Weekly tiebreaker: seniority.

Sorry, Josh Dulaney :-(.

But before ustedes at Calvary Chapel and $cientology rejoice too much...

...Josh will still be writing for us.

The OCeeker
, his hilarious church reviews? Will still be in the paper and online. He's working on a couple of covers that'll blow people away. And once I scrounge up more pesos by selling off some of my first-edition Hubert Howe Bancroft books, I want Josh to continue to contribute to Navel Gazing--and you'll probably see more of him on Heard Mentality, 'cause Nate has a bit more money in the budget that I.

Sorry, Josh: nothing personal. You're one of the best peckerwoods I've had the pleasure of knowing. Now, excuse me as I go back to swimming in Jim Beam and howling at the state of modern journalism.

Josh - instant karma gotcha for all that spiritual hating and God bashing. Heard there is an opening at Penn State for someone with your life skills.

I am who I am.

I don't need to try to pretend to be something I'm not in order to build myself up, Mr. Professor...

That's a weak attempt to deflect the question by insulting people.

So name names as to all the racist OC Weekly writers you've booted off..

Its a cop out to make this decision on seniority when we all know that some writers simply aren't pulling their weight.

Given how Gustavo has implied that the OC Weekly staffers were racist in the past, why does it not surprise me that he gave the boot to the non-mexican writer.

Sorry to hear this. You did a great job Josh. As a small biz owner and former publisher, I also sympathize with Gustavo. The toughest calls are the budgetary ones. It's so much easier when someone sucks or screws up...so much tougher when they're good, but the dollars force a cut somewhere. Nature of the biz. Thanks for covering the CC stuff. Keep seeking :-)

Aw, Mexican. You're here in my heart...and my heart will...go on. So much love for a honkified hack. At least you didn't LJBF me. And I still think turning Michelle into O'Woo is a great idea. Please mail me the panties that are on my desk.

As for you, gentle readers: I kinda like you fuckers!

I know I was never the nicest guy to Josh but he rolled with the punches... And he name dropped me in a story so that lend him instant cred.

Would have been better to let the commenters vote someone off the island.

 @riley

I am who I am? That sounds like a personal problem, pal ...

@riley Typical pendejo logic: insist on an answer to a question that never existed in the first place. Who are you again?

@riley And here come the pathetic fanboys! Sorry, pendejo, but if a staffer sucked, I wouldn't even wait for the excuse of a layoff to boot their ass (history proves this)—but thanks for playing stupid! As for the "fire the non-Mexican" slant? Typical Stormfront logic...

@20ftjesus Are you kidding me? So many people would simultaneously elect me that our servers would be destroyed.

To EMAIL ?? ... EMAIL ??

Who the hell wants this in their EMAIL ???

Why would someone need to monitor their EMAIL when the discussion is taking place ONLINE within the Commenting Software?

What idiots designed this pathetic, amateurish system?

The FOLLOWING, COMMENTS and Live Updating should all take place WITHIN the USER's Livefyre Profile / Activity pages.

Email ... LOL!

Livefyre = Pathetic Fail.

@DonkeyHotay The comments will be forwarded to your email if you set it up on the link I provided. I know it works because that's how I found out you replied.

It can ONLY get better, it sucks so much.

Disqus was way better developed, with actual useful features and not lame Twitwit/Failbook eye-candy.

The new system does not even thread discussion comments beyond 2 replies! -- after that, branching stops and all subsequent replies are stacked in one big pile, with no indication of who is replying to which of the many comments.

That's such a pathetic first-generation failure, civilized comment software evolved beyond back in 2001 ...

Not being able to EDIT posts -- as a deliberate design feature -- is yet another idiocy.

Does NOT work -- no conversation follow-ups appear in the user's profile or comment activity page.

@GustavoArellano I had a thought a few moments back,  it would be convenient to "follow" stories,  not sure how it might work, select "Follow" button, get automatic links to updates and/or new comments(?).

The J. D. situation is why I could never go into management,  I'm much too wuss to be able to make the tough decisions, when required.  Glad to hear OCW wil still carry at least some of his work.

@909Jeff It'll get better—just let us work out the kinks...
