Disneyland Fireworks Exploded While Anaheim Protested Against Police Shootings=Greatest Moment in OC History!

Thumbnail image for disneyland_fireworks.jpg
Wow: if ever you needed a Nero fiddling moment for the mess that is Anaheim, it happened this night, just around the time when protestors angry at the police shooting deaths of Manuel Diaz and Joel Acevedo were facing off against police: Disneyland shot off its fireworks, completely oblivious of the chaos going on just up Harbor Boulevard, about 5 minutes away.

For reals.

Now, you surely can't expect The Mouse to turn off its fireworks while the city that hosts it is in near-riot mode, right? The show must go on!

But still: the surreal site of Disneyland's fireworks blowing up at the most inappropriate moment possible not only ensures the Happiest Place on Earth's continued participation in the history of OC anarchy (see: Yippies occupation of Tom Sawyer Island), but will be a moment I will retell FOREVER. This encapsulates the bizarre reality that is Orange County more than ANYTHING that's ever happened or ever will. And the Sunkist memories carry on...

Disney is about money. Deal with them at the business level and it is difficult on B2B level. I know current and former employees and they will tell you "its expensive to run this place" ; well when you bring up the topic of visitation expense.  http://www.anomalies-unlimited.com/Disney/DisDeaths.html  <-- if they will clean up a death scene, they could care less if an "uprising" is going on in the area. They do not lose sleep or lose visitors over these types of actions.

As far as the shooting. If the assailants are already contained, then IT IS NOT the job of an officer to pronounce sentence over the detained. A system is in place for sentencing - "due process". To undercut that (even though it has flaws) brings on chaos - as demonstrated. People have the right to protest, but not the right to injure others or destroy the property of others. One usually only diminishes their "point", loses most of others' sympathy and closes the ears of those who might be listening with illogical actions.

As far as carrying weapons (or doing something worse), if you do the crime, you should be willing to do the time. Myself included (when i was younger and naive), you always knew if you got caught you where going to pay the cost. No excuses. It was always the joke, need to know what the penalty of a crime, dont ask a lawyer, ask a guy off the street. If your selling drugs, an "enforcer", or  doing something of the illegal variety, no excuses. Most know a cop will shoot you, so no point putting yourself in a situation where the  probability of bodily harm increases - needlessly. <-- can argue "need" endlessly in a giant circle.

Having friends in Anaheim in not-so-good neighborhood growing up, My family, friends and I have had guns pulled on me from various gangs. I have also had Anaheim PD threaten me with bodily harm for something simple as pulling over and telling officers I could take my friends car home who didnt have a license.  Nothing racial there, the officer was Latino, same as me. In Anaheim its a culture, nothing to do with race. The problem is the majority of issues in the neighborhoods come from Latinos, and usually Latino-on-Latino crime.

We have to talk about that side of the issue as well, evenly.

Unfortunately when you have assholes vs assholes, only assholes win and lose. Again, cant go around executing people. Another bigger issue is the parenting involved. This lady is crying victim when she is part of the problem.

Some people are just out to cause problems, always been that way, always will be. Have to be honest with ourselves and not see color as the primary problem. Took a break to write on here, a topic that could go on forever. People need to relax and see what turns up and then TRY to correct the fundamental issues - and there is huge pile of them.

Lets get this straight people gangs are as American as apple pie. You guys act like this is some kind of foreign terrorist al caida or something. Gang are a result of marginalization. Just like the jews, irish and italians did earlier. Maybe if we blame the brown people for doing something about being the underdog than we can feel better about ourselves, yay!

Hi there. FIRST all off thanks you OC weekly for giving us a needed perspective. Many people are following these events and what are we to do read the latimes which is never in the interest of the people, it doesnt serve their purpose. And yes I say the people because we are all in this together, this great experiment, this "democracy". Well guess what, those in power would like to take every right, that we have worked so long and hard far, away as quickly as possible. And WE are not gonna let that happen. SECOND: To all the self proclaimed "white" people, there is no such thing. No you didn't come from the Caucus mountains nor did your ancestors unless your Armenian, Georgian, or Russian. You are only "white" because you get a privilege to be light skinned in this country. FOR REAL! I am mixed heritage Irish and Mexican and yes I can kick your ass but besides the point I grew up in the area of LA policed by the RAMPART division. I was constantly threatened and harassed by the boyz in blue (AND TO BE CLEAR THEY ARE THE BIGGEST GANG IN THE CITY) . I would be randomly and illegally stopped because I was young and brown and for no other reason. Ive been toled by them I almost blew your brains out and they also told friends of mine I wish I couldve shot you etc. See WHITE people dont have to worry about this sort of deal so they cant even imagine what youngbrown men face on a daily basis. You guys are not harassed for being white although after AURORA I want to racial profile all loner white guys (you are so creepy and scare me now). So to all the white people please open your eyes and why not try to have some Mexican friends from the hood and youll see we really are nice guys just sometimes we are on the defensive for a lot of bullshit we get. Thanks Gus for keeping it real and FTPs ya know!

Disneyland fireworks continue despite the city being in near-riot mode.

A $50 million lawsuit is filed 3 days after a shooting.

The profit motive is strong here in the OC.

Purely from a Disneyland Cast member standpoint, the park isn't going to cancel the fireworks that thousands of people were counting on for something that is happening down the street. We all know how much the park is charging these days, and a cancellation of the fireworks would cause a number of complaints and issues.

From the OCR:

"Condon said in the statement. "But we live in a dangerous world where there are too many violent gang members like Manuel "Stomper" Diaz and Joel "Yogi" Acevedo who spent their young lives wreaking havoc on their neighborhoods and the law-abiding citizens who live there. It was the actions of these gang members, not the police officers, who set these unfortunate events in motion.""

Why does the OCWeekly support gang members and known criminals?

20ftjesus

From MSNBC:

"Police union officials pointed out that both men had criminal records and had both spent time in state prison. Diaz served time for possession of a gun on school grounds and a criminal street gang enhancement, and had pleaded guilty to drug possession charges in 2008 and 2011, the statement said.

Acevedo served prison time for street terrorism and receiving stolen property, and in 2010 pleaded guilty to resisting a police officer, the statement said."

Why don't you look up the people hurt by Diaz and Acevedo to see how they feel?  Diaz actually carried a gun to school.  Doesn't Lieberman have school-age children in Anaheim?

@dmvrenewal Good point. On that note, heinous acts by those in power, in this case the police, is nothing new, and is also  American as apple pie. Looks like this debate can be put to bed, everybody move on. Nothing to argue about here.

@20ftjesus Jesus, see this type of reporting is showing the TRUE COLORS of the OC Weekly. Gustavo and his ilk do not care about what is right or wrong, but only about who is mexican and who is not. For Christ's sake, the guy was shooting at the cops--what are they supposed to do!

Which people did Diaz hurt, and how does that justify his death? Since poor kids carry weapons to school maybe we need to investigate the shitty social conditions that make kids poor with guns. Anyways the community within which Diaz lived seem to have liked him well enough to stand up to armed police over his killing. Armed police who were firing non-lethal projectiles at school children, I might add. If you were actually concerned about the safety of kids you would take that into account. But you clearly don't actually care.

@20ftjesus it's rather obvious if you've been paying attention. Paul Pressler and his horrible California Adventures of 10 years ago just had a major makeover with Cars stuff to try and beef up years of disappointing attendance at CA Adv.  In fact, I see everything happening at DLand today as a sad, sad continuation of the direction started by Pressler all those years ago. Most people are now too young to remember how Disneyland used to be (purely from a merchandizing standpoint alone...) but ask former cast members and you'll understand how it's changed--

One of the horrible things that happened when CA Adv , Downtown Disney, and the Californian opened is that suddenly, DL and the other businesses suddenly needed to hire tons more workers, and they suddenly were saying Yes to far more people, people that they would traditionally have taken a pass on. Again, ask OC people in their 40s, 50s, and 60s who were there years ago, perhaps worked there, to show you behavior today that would NEVER have happened twenty years ago. This is one of the reasons that I stopped going to Disneyland -- the price is way too high considering that every time I go I see all the ways that it's not the Disnelyland it used to be.

Sure, you'd spend a fortune on food and merch, but it was much classier all around. It's like the difference between a $2000 escort for the evening and a $20 streetwalker on Beach Blvd in your car. Except with DLand you are paying $81.

@GustavoArellano Dude, your reporting is a little biased and when people disagree with you, you usually shoot thinly veiled insults at them.  People accuse you of hating white people all the time.  I don't think that's true.  You just think you're better than most people (I've read some of your book and got that impression a few years ago) You come off as smug and elitist, but then sometimes switch gears and seem like a cool decent guy.  I'm inferring all of this from being an ardent "reader' of the Weekly and the website.  I've never met you in person, and I may just be really angry because I won "Guess Where I Ate" and got a really lame DVD.

@thecyclist to know which people he hurt, we would have to infiltrate his 'hood, and ask his fellow gang members. And shitty social conditions that make kids poor with guns? WTF...I can barely afford a handgun, and kids are carrying them at schools? This so called protest isn't about "Manuel "Stomper" Diaz and Joel "Yogi" Acevedo"...It is about race significance, and defending the right to be brown.

This is really biased Pro-Latino reporting. and omiting the facts of Gang affiliation and previous criminal history, also brings this to attention. The two scum who were shot were Habitual law breakers, and Anaheim will be a better place without them. Blame their parents for them getting shot, not the cops who have an overall role of protecting the majority of Anaheim, not the trouble making gangbangers!

All living beings, 909Jeff. You can find compassion and love for everyone. You don't have to condone their actions. You can find compassion and love. For everyone. It's easy to feel compassion for the person getting their head stomped in, and yes, I pray for them, of course.

I know it's not an easy thing -- it's one of the reasons they nailed Jesus up on that cross-- all that crazy talk about turning the other cheek and giving them the shirts off your back and loving your enemy-- but it's what we are called to do. People who are gang members, even if you know they have committed crimes, even if they committed a horrible crime with malice and hatred in their hearts, are still human beings. You can't just hate them and demonize them and shoot them and sweep them away.

909Jeff

@yoshiyahu "I pray for you to see these men as human beings. I pray for you to find compassion in your heart for all living beings."

Does that include the person who most likely had their head caved in when "Stomper" earned his nickname? Or are you gonna try and tell me he got the nickname because he liked to dance?

yoshiyahu

MANY people share your feelings. So I am not surprised by your callous attitude. I am saddened by it.

These men were gang members, and as a result, when they are killed by the police, we are supposed to be accepting. Perhaps happy. We are certainly not supposed to be upset by the actions of the police. We are not supposed to see the killed men as human, because they are members of street gangs. They are no longer human, apparently. They are insects, perhaps, to be exterminated. They have no rights. They have no families. They have no hearts and souls. They are just Gang Members. What's more,  to  question the police who killed them, and the role of the City in this, is Bias meriting Shame.

I pray for you to see these men as human beings. I pray for you to find compassion in your heart for all living beings.
