Rodney King Dead after Presumed Drowning

Rodney King, whose videotaped beating by cops in 1991 sparked the LA riots, died early today. He was 47.

He was discovered in the pool of his Rialto home by his fiancée Cynthia Kelley, whose first date with King was at a Newport Beach pizzeria the day after she served on a Los Angeles civil jury that awarded him $3.8 million.

Kelley told Rialto Police that King spent Saturday drinking and smoking pot before she went to bed at 2 a.m. this morning. After being plucked out of the pool, CPR was performed to no avail.

Police, who suspect no foul play was involved, are investigating King's death as a drowning.

Since the riots of 1994 it is debatable whether race relations have actually improved or if anything deteriorated as tensions remain high as polarities still persist in urban communities. Then again the aura of Rodney King as a celebrity (how paradoxical) only grew. Perhaps even he managed to circumvent the strife of his circumstances that so many African Americans still to this day consistently find themselves up against.
