Will New Fullerton City Council Appoint Ex-Sheriff's Deputy Bill Hunt as Chief of Police?

Bill Hunt
[July 4 UPDATE at end] Bill Hunt was one of the few Orange County Sheriff's Department (OCSD) deputies who had the cojones to publicly stand against the corruption of Mike Carona, our sheriff turned convicted felon and present day resident of a federal prison in Colorado.

For having ethics and common decency, Hunt saw Carona blatantly sabotage his career before FBI and IRS agents arrested him, a jury convicted him and U.S. District Court Judge Andrew J. Guilford sent him away as a scumbag who abused his public office.

But even after it was clear that Carona was a demented crook and Hunt--who served as the popular chief of police in San Clemente--had been wronged, our board of supervisors has strenuously fought a lawsuit the deputy brought against the OCSD for Carona's illegal retaliation.

After Hunt left the department he launched a successful private detective firm, but there's no doubt that the inability of Orange County's leaders to do the right thing has cost him financially and smeared his reputation.

There are rumors that justice may finally find Hunt.

In June, Fullerton voters recalled a majority of their city council, three members who'd let the police department run wild and showed callous indifference to the gruesome July 2011 police killing of Kelly Thomas, a unarmed homeless man.

Next week, three new councilmen--Travis Kiger, Greg Sebourn and Doug Chaffee--will likely get sworn in and consider revamping the disgraced Fullerton Police Department.

I know from past interviews that Kiger, Sebourn and previously elected councilman Bruce Whitaker have been solid Hunt backers in other forums.

Earlier this week, Tony Bushala's influential Friends For Fullerton's Future blog that advocated for the recall began to call for Hunt to take over the Fullerton PD from Acting Chief Dan Hughes.

Yesterday, Kiger listed hiring a new police chief as one of his priorities.

Does this mean Hunt will get the job? Who knows? Many entrenched OC Republicans hate him because he's not a knee-jerk lemming to party leadership. Local liberals fret over his ties to controversial Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

For his part, the conservative San Clemente resident tells me that he'd be honored to assume command of the department but declined an interview on the topic.

Stay tuned.

UPDATE, July 4: The Friends For Fullerton's Future blog reported that the new city council discussed hiring a police chief but took no further action on the topic at its first meeting on Tuesday.

Relationship? She took a picture with them. Your are missing the whole point of the article and the Lua deal. The worst case scenario for the establishment hacks has occurred with the recall's success. They got blasted out of the park. They didn't even hit the stadium lights. Next insult would be Hunt who previously failed to kiss their arses solidifying the deal. Ya see if the establishment can't make a hex stick, they become impotent (pun intended). Then they have to sit around rubbing their hands (or whatever) to figure out what to do next.

I would be MORE worried about Hunt's potential relationship with Barbara Coe and CCIR than Arizona's crazy Sheriff Joe.' Between Carona and Hunt, there were no "better" choices.

Fair enough. Just evaluate his service record. Looks like the City Council is going to step to the plate regarding hiring. I am sure that during the hiring process they will leave no doubt what they will require concerning FPD policy parameters and oversight. I believe part of the reason there was a successful recall was so the City Council could do just that. Whoever they choose will probably be an asset to the city.

I'll keep it short and simple.  Arpaio abuses prisoners, thus the lawsuits.  Fullerton abused suspects and killed a man for no reason.  There is no point having a recall election and hiring a new chief if he has a law and order "get tough" philosophy which is what got us where we are in the first place.  That's not a left or right position in Fullerton by the way, That's a common sense position.  I'm not saying Hunt is like that.  I'm saying Arpaio is like that and we would never hire someone like him.  Hunt may be nothing like Arpaio.  That's why we're all asking questions.

Looks like the "idiot" voters are going to bring Arpaio back for another term by a landslide...again. So far Arpaio has brought in unprecedented amount of campaign contributions to the tune of 6 million dollars to his closest competitor's 145K. I am sure there is outside money. Orange County was one of Arpaio's favorite destinations for just that reason. He has done about 16 out of state campaign events. No matter right? Obama is going to Geneva to raise money from europeans. How cool is that?  So as for LAPD Lefty's comments (as he buys into the lefty AZ press), unless you live in their neck of the woods, you have no clue as what is happening on the ground. The "idiot" local voters obviously do. Which brings me back to Hunt. How does anyone know Hunt has talked to Arpaio in the last 4 years as things have gotten particularly hotter for Arpaio? Answer: You don't. As an aside, I am obviously a conservative (with libertarian leanings) but I can tell you Moxley is the only guy on the other side of the aisle I would trust.

Thank you Lefty. Rogers, you are doing Hunt no favors.  The only way he becomes Chief in Fullerton is by distancing himself from Arpaio.  Arpaio has infringed on people's First Amendment and Eight Amendment rights repeatedly.  No self-respecting libertarian or lover of liberty period would support Arpaio.  That fact that you do speaks volumes abour yourself. As for cost-effective, please actually do a tiny bit of research before you write.  Arpaio is a financial disaster for the idiot voters of Maricopa county.  Under Arpaio Maricopa has seen more law enforcement-related lawsuits than New York City.  He's cost taxpayers literally millions. Do your friend Bill a favor and stop talking before you sink whatever chances he has left.

I am a 32 year California police officer who attained the rand of Sergeant. Arpiao scares the living shit out of me. The man has had his critics arrested and prosecuted on bogus charges. That alone should bar him from any position of authority. Arpiao is a very dangerous man and the only reason he has this power is because normally good people do nothing.
