Yoselin Torres Tovar, 2 Days into Murder Trial, Pleads Guilty to Stabbing Her Newborn to Death

Two days into her jury trial, a 20-year-old Fullerton mother pleaded guilty today to repeatedly stabbing her newborn girl to death and hiding the corpse in the closet of her family's home in April 2010. Yoselin Torres Tovar is scheduled to be sentenced to 16 years to life in state prison at a June 1 Santa Ana hearing. She copped to one felony count of second degree murder with a sentencing enhancement allegation for the use of a deadly weapon.

Then 18, Tovar didn't want to have a baby, and no one in her family knew she was pregnant when, between 7 and 9 a.m. on April 18, 2010, she gave birth in the bathroom of her family's Fullerton home. Tovar went on to stab the baby girl multiple times, wrap up the body and place the bundle in her bedroom closet.

Family members saw blood on Tovar and took her to St. Jude Hospital in Fullerton, where doctors examined her and determined she had just given birth. Shortly after police were alerted, Tovar expelled the placenta at the hospital.

That night, cops found the discarded newborn, and Tovar was arrested on suspicion of murder.

With honesty look deep into all you've done in your life and most will certainly find some thing close-to or just as horrific that you did, but for which you didn't get caught. Just because you didn't get caught does not mean it didn't happen and that it wasn't just as horrific! At least Ms. Torres had the courage to face a judge and accept responsibility for her actions. Regardless of how she got to that decision, she voiced her guilt. Those of you with "secrets," what's your plan?

Ms. Torres is far from stupid; maybe she was hopeful that someone would rescue her and her baby because after all, she carried her for 9 whole months. Can you imagine her desperation! Instead, she went unnoticed--neglected and ignored by family members, school administrators, and peers.

Her choice to plead guilty tells me she made a very smart decision: 16 yrs instead of Life. As bad as it is, what's done is done. Chin up Yoselin! It was a horrible mistake, but you learned from it and can move past it. Good luck.

You can say whatever you want. If she pleaded guilty she is going away for a very long time. I would say that if she did it she will have to live with what she did, but it's obvious that if she did do it she doesn't have any moral compass.

I'm not a big anti-abortion guy, but isn't it strange that if she paid a 'doctor' to essentially stab the baby (then dissect it) inside her womb, oh, 5 weeks earlier, than she'd be in the clear?

Actually the cut off date for an abortion here is 24 weeks. A baby's due date is at 40 weeks, so the abortion thing does not apply here.

I've tried to find the actual cutoff for legal abortions in California. It's pretty fuzzy, because California law allows a 'physical or mental health' exception for 2nd trimester (and third trimester/post-viability?) abortions.
