Skeptic-fest Takes Place This Weekend in Irvine

There probably won't be an invocation. 

The Orange County Freethought Alliance Conference is taking place Saturday and Sunday at the University of California, Irvine, 210 C Student Center. A slew of skeptics are scheduled to talk about what they don't believe, and why they don't believe it.

The Saturday sessions run from noon to 5 p.m., and 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Sunday's sessions run from 9 a.m. to noon, and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Featured speakers include Michael Shermer, publisher of Skeptics magazine, and Dan Barker, president of the Freedom From Religion Foundation.

One-day or two-day passes range from $80 - $150. Student passes are $35. Save $30 by pre-registering online at Check the website for details on conference-related parties throughout the weekend.

But you gotta hand it to Shermer -- he's done a great job monetizing the new atheist/agnostic movement.


The money goes to a non-profit that pays for other events and billboards around OC. Travel and use of the space is not cheap so there is a cover. This is a rather entertaining event for those who enjoy the subject. Look at the price as tickets to a benefit concert. The difference is the skeptics don't say you'll burn in hell if you don't show up.
