Ron Paul on Americans: "What happened to us? Why are we such wimps?"

RonPaulRally1.jpg
Ron Paul: Fuck the Fed
Ron Paul spit Libertarian fire at a youth rally Wednesday night in front of the packed westside stands at Cal State Fullerton's Titan Stadium

For those familiar with Paul's platform, it was standard fare from the Texas congressman, who, unlike presumed Republican nominee Mitt Romney, has preached the same message for decades.

Teenage and twentysomething whites locked arms with their Latino and Asian brethren, forming an amen chorus for all of Paul's high spots, during a nearly 50-minute speech that made only vague references to an official campaign, thanks to GOP voters who have pretzeled themselves into voting for the flip-flopping Mormon with great hair.

Among the faithful was Tahmina Habi, a 25-year-old Irvine resident (and genuine Muslim babe!), who came out of the closet Wednesday night. (Many of her friends and family presumably didn't know she was a Paul disciple.)

"I think everybody just found out today," she said. "I think he's brilliant.

Habi supports Paul because he wants to repeal the Patriot Act and scrap the Internal Revenue Service. She wouldn't have been disappointed by Paul's performance. After circling the stadium in a black Chevrolet SUV as Queen's "Princes of the Universe" blared at the crowd, Paul took the stage on the field, sporting a blue Oxford shirt, dark blue jeans and white kicks, and rattled off a list of Libertarian talking points, and repeals he would issue if America ever elected him president.

"Some people think the election is coming to end," Paul said. "The revolution is just getting going." The crowd roared, aaaaaand, he was off!

Paul on the Federal Reserve System, as his fans screamed "End the Fed!": "That sounds like a wonderful idea! Where did you ever get that idea?"

On foreign policy: "For some reason, there's still a lot of people in Washington that don't quite understand that we are less respected and less liked when we invade countries, bomb countries, occupy countries, tell other people what to do, bribe their dictators. So there's another option and the American people are hearing about it, they're understanding it, and that is why now, 75 percent of the American people have come to our viewpoint and said it's time to come home, get out of Afghanistan, bring the troops home."

On civil liberties (and getting rid of the Patriot Act): "There's been a systematic attack on our civil liberties and we have to stand up and say no more. The purpose of government is to protect our liberty, not to destroy our liberty."

On entitlement programs: "An entitlement isn't a right. You have a right to your life. You have a right to ownership of your life. You have a right to your liberty. You should have the right to the fruits of your labor. But entitlement means that you're entitled to somebody else's life, or someone else's' productive effort, somebody else's wealth? No, you don't have that."

On healthcare: "Of course, once we get in the repealing mood, we'll repeal that Obamacare as well...we want to advance the cause of liberty to such an extreme that we want to return to the times when we were allowed to drink raw milk if wanted to."

On ganja: "And if...an individual happens to be ill and have heard that growing certain substances in the backyard could help them, let them do it."

On government regulations, related to what Americans inhale, eat and drink: "What happened to us? Why are we such wimps? Why don't we take our liberty back?"

Paul also took swipes at the Department of Homeland Security and the Transportation Security Administration, and said he wanted to repeal the 16th Amendment

"I really never expected a whole lot in my political career," Paul said. "Matter of fact, I didn't even expect a political career. I just wanted to get a few things off my chest."

RonPaulRally2.jpg
"President Paul! President Paul!"
Though wildly enthusiastic, many in the audience tempered their zeal with the reality that Paul really has no chance of winning the presidency.

Jonathan Warner, a 22-year-old Rancho Cucamonga resident, holds a slim hope that Paul will land in the Oval Office, but supports him anyway, because of "what he's done to the Republican Party, and awakening the masses" to what he considers the destruction of constitutional principles.

A 26-year-old man named "Fred", from Chino, was caught in an act of PWB -- Paul-support While Black. He chuckled and said, "You talking to me because I'm the only black person here?"

Yup. The only one I noticed on the way to the parking lot. While smoking a cigarette, Fred said he gets hassled by some in his family for supporting Paul, as they chalk it up to "the weed thing" and scoff at the idea that he can relate to conservatives and Libertarians.

"But I'm a supporter of Ron and his platform," Fred said.

After his speech, Paul was hustled away by handlers who said he had to catch an airplane. I sidled up to a young female reporter who appeared to be a college student. Paul's handlers looked at me, then her, and let her ask a question. Oh well, tits over wits.

Still, not to be stymied, as Paul turned and started to walk away, ol' Dulaney asked the question that was on every Orange Countians' mind: "Mr. Paul, have you had an In-N-Out burger?"

"Pardon me?" he said, looking puzzled as he walked away.

Then, a handler spun his ass off.

"He eats it all the time, actually," the spin doctor said.

Right, bro.

Why are Americans wimps, unable to take responsibility? Like, for racist screeds in publications with their names on it? Or working with neo-NAZI groups? Why, Ron? If I only had the equivalent of a a nickel in gold dust for every time I've asked that...

Ron Paul is the typical libertarian and thinks the market can solved anything, and this from a former conservative. Take the massage business in OC its got more women trafficied in from foreign countries against their will, all Paul once to do is make the business legal which has not seem to get rid of the trafficing. Do what Sweden does and fine the Johns. Paul is a typical libertarian that got us into the messed that Calif faces and yes without Reagan big pardon back in the late  1980's OC would be a lot less hispanic. i blame business for wanting to hire anyone that crosses the border and Paul favors business hiring who they want.

Bill Clinton, Al Gore &Senator Obama supported the California 2006 Prop. 87, a GMO corn ethanolwelfare program.

Bill, Al have changed opinion on the ethanol mandate, I wonder if Obama willmake this the time for CHANGE?

I support a waiver of the ethanol mandate, voluntary use of ethanol in my gas.

Federal ethanol policy increases Government motors oil use and Big oil profit.

It is reported that todayCalifornia is using Brazil sugar cane ethanol at $0.16 per gal increase overusing GMO corn fuel ethanol. In this game the cars and trucks get to pay andBig oil profits are the result that may be ready for change.

We do NOT support AB 523 orSB 1396 unless the ethanol mandate is changed to voluntary ethanol in our gas.

Folks that pay more at thepump for less from Cars, trucks, food, water & air need better, it is time.

The car tax of AB 118 Nunezis just a simple Big oil welfare program, AAA questioned the policy and somefolks still agree.

AB 523 & SB 1326 are justa short put (waiver) from better results.

It's the modern liberals Ron, they turned this generation into pussies. I've never seen such spineless jellyfish. Definitely, they would have gotten their asses kicked around the block daily if they had grown up just a few decades ago. The whole country is going to hell and they just got their heads buried up each other's asses and their mobile phones. Unbelievable.

Had a lot of fun reading this, the humor and relatively unbiased coverage of the event and people who attended made it enjoyable - thanks Josh.

Whether Dr. Paul can win or not depends upon the delegates and then the Electors.  The popular vote matters only in how it directs the Electors, if at all.  Bush vs Gore comes to mind.

It should be noted that Dr. Paul has the plurality needed to be nominated from the floor in Tampa.  Rather than leave things to the Old Guard RINOs, Dr. Paul's supporters have made it their business to learn the process and give of their time, energy and money to fight for him.  Not only are they winning, in some cases, like Alaska, they have taken over.

And that's scaring the shite out of the Old Guard GOP so badly they have threatened to ban Nevada from the Tampa convention if Paul delegates win.  Think about it, an entire state disenfranchised for fear of one man.

Why would the RNC do that if Dr. Paul had "no chance" of winning the nomination?

This article and a lot of the comments seem like blatant propaganda to me. Ron Paul has a hell of a shot at the presidency whether you hack journalists report it or not.

Ron Paul is the only leader of integrity who is not afraid to speak "truth" to "power." He has all the right ideas at this juncture in history to save us from more wars, empire building, bankruptcy and a shrinking middle class. Tampa convention will be much more exciting to watch this year since the coronation of moderate Mitt Romney will not be as easy as the "establishment" once thought. The truth will keep on unraveling and people will begin to learn about what this man stands for! Protect our liberties, freedom and let us keep the fruits of our labor by less and less taxation and less and less unnecessary government spending! Ron Paul is America's last chance to set things right!

Thanks Josh

Yesterday I invited you to attend with an open mind.  I think you did that and wrote down what you saw and injected a little humor.  Nobody expects everyone to agree with everything that Ron Paul says.  All we ask is that people listen and make up their own minds instead of just listening to the party line on the main stream media.

Most of us Ron Paul supporters see him as an honest man, who tells it like he sees it, and stands up at every opportunity to serve the people rather than the special interests.  This is a rare thing among politicians so pardon some of us if we appear to be in love with the guy.

Does he really have a chance to win?  Who knows.  Stranger things have happened in elections, and I for one believe that he would do far more to protect our civil liberties than either Obama or Romney.  Your readers deserved a fair accounting of the event and I think you gave us that.

Talk about the pot calling the kettle black!

Ron Paul is the chairperson on a House Financial sub-committee and has failed to use his position to condemn the Wall Street criminals who brought the entire economy down. Thanks for covering this Ron Paul event. Except for the wishcasting about Willard Romneycare having locked down the nomination (the media's standard line since 2008), a good article.

However, as we all know, Willard "Mittens" Romneycare lost to the weak RINO candidate who lost to Barry in 2008. Romneycare is completely unelectable and cannot beat Obama. Only Ron Paul attracts enough independent and youth voters to do that.

Willard and Barry are pretty much interchangeable when it comes to policy positions and integrity. They both get the bulk of their kickbacks (er, campaign contributions) from the same bailed-out Wall Street banks. They've both taken over healthcare. They both believe that your kids should go die in the Middle East in undeclared, never-ending wars. They both believe you're too stupid to decide how to spend your own money. They both believe in wide-open U.S. borders. They both believe in the totally failed "War on Drugs" that keeps prices high for the drug cartels and corrupts law enforcement on both sides of the border. They both believe that it's OK for the TSA to feel up your toddler or your wife or your dying grandmother during their daily performances of "Security Theatre." They both think it's OK for one man--the president of the United States--to have the power to kidnap and murder U.S. citizens without charges, without a trial, without any due process whatsoever (NDAA). They both think it's OK to destroy the value of every dollar in your wallet by allowing the un-elected, private Federal Reserve to create trillions more out of thin air. They both think the $16 TRILLION national debt is no problem.

Romney = Obama

Ron Paul = A return to the principles and policies that made the U.S.A. the most prosperous and free country that has ever existed on the face of the earth.

With all the positives in this article contributed to Dr. Paul, why does the author have to state: "Though wildly enthusiastic, many in the audience tempered their zeal with the reality that Paul really has no chance of winning the presidency. "The reality is that the GOP rules allow the delegate counts to go according to the delegate counts, not the MSM's ideals that this is that no mater what.  The Revolution is happening and we are winning.  We have won the plurality of delegates in the states that have completed that process and we are in line for a victory.  The reality of a Dr. Paul Presidency is solidly planted in the existing Presidential Race.  Why these negative statements and very many others are present in EVERY single article about Dr. Paul and have been from the very beginning of this and the last Presidential cycle but not once has this type of false opinion been utilized in MSM articles about any of the other candidates to anywhere near the same degree.  Unfair, biased reporting to this degree is slanderous and defamation of character lawsuits are in the works (or should be) to eliminate all but the facts from those responsible for the reporting of facts and keep the opinions in the OPINION articles.

" Paul really has no chance of winning the presidency. "

THAT is a line of BS, IMO.  It's more of the same "unelectable" crap that has been spun to death since before a single vote was cast yet, here the person is reporting the size crowd and saying "Paul really has no chance of winning the presidency."

Hey, exactly how many people are attending Romney or Obama's rallies?  How many people would bother attending them in the rain as Ron Paul's supporters have?

This election isn't over yet.  Why act as if it is?  Voting for Romney, maybe?

The corrupt mainstream media, especially cable news has done everything they can to silence Ron Paul. This is not only corrupt it is unAmerican. By silencing Ron Paul through omission of news, the media is silencing American citizens that support Ron Paul. I will never trust the media again. I see it as propaganda for the elitist of our society that could care less about the average American. Romney and Obama are both elitist; they both get campaign funds from Goldman Sachs.

> Take the massage business in OC its got more women> trafficied in from foreign countries against their will,

Yes, let's take that as an example.

Why isn't the government, at the halls of power, enforcing the law, and putting people into prison for this?  I mean, you know about it.  Why hasn't the government done anything about it?

Speculation?

Here's my speculation - the government is filled with a bunch of criminals.

You're trusting THEM to solve problems.  You're trusting the government that lied you into a war in Iraq, then found nobody accountable to solve problems.  You're trusting a government that has run up a 15 trillion dollar debt which is obviously unpayable to solve problems.  You're trusting a government that is trying to railroad the nation into a war with Iran to solve problems.  You're trusting a government that handed out an unknown amount of money to a bunch of criminals in our financial sectpr, not prosecuting a single one (even Corzine who is obviously guilty to solve problems.

Corporations aren't perfect by any means, and they aren't altruistic but they aren't a bunch of mafioso thugs like our government is.

Gee, why is there a sex slave trade in Washington DC?  Because the people who run Washington DC wants there to be a sex slave trade.

You're a fool to trust obviously untrustable people. You're an idiot.

I don't trust corporations, but guess what, I don't have to give them my money if I don't want to do business with them, and they will go bankrupt if enough people feel the same way, but the government - I have to give them money, no matter how much they lie to me, how many laws they break, regardless of how unethical or dishonest they are - or I get to go to prison. Gee, that's much better than a coporation which I voluntarily give money to, if I chose to buy their service, voluntarily...

Oh sure, every 4 years I get to vote in a new clown as president, who will make promises like ending the Patriot Act, ending Warrentless Wiretaping, ending the wars, ending secrecy in the government - and when he gets elected, he will do none of that. Wow, what an improvement Obama is over Bush - having kept every single policy of the Bush Adminstration that the Democrats once railed (properly I may add) against. Well, at least he's a Democrat, Right?

Big improvement. Now instead of Bush desecrating the Constitution, Obama is doing it. Wow, that's a lot better.

fuzzywzhe

How is Romney any different than Obama?

* He passed the same health care act Obama forced through in Massachussets.* He supports the Patriot Act, just like Obama does.* He said he would have signed the NDAA which allows indefinite detention of US citizens without charge or trial - ending 5th amendment rights - Obama signed that into law.* He supports all the wars, just like Obama does.* He said he supported the attack on Libya, just as Obama did.* He said he supports Warrantless Wiretapping, ending 4th Amendment rights, just like Obama does.* He supports bailouts, having received one, just like Obama does.

Why should I support Romney over Paul, much less Obama?  Romney is a clone of Obama, and Obama is a clone of Bush.  I despise them all, and if I'm stuck with one of those 3, frankly, I don't care which one of them is running the nation into the ground. Why should I care if Romney is president if he does the same thing Obama is doing?

I'm not going to give my seal of approval ot any of those buffoons.  But you will, because you're entirely unprincipled, which is why we keep getting stuck with these dirtbags over and over again.  Because you're easily manipulated.

I will never, ever, support Romney or Obama, so if the only important thing to you is whether we have a Republican in the Oval Office you better vote for Paul, because nothing will get me to support Romney and I'm not alone. There are a lot of us.

But you people, you'll just blindly vote for whatever Republican is running. If Stalin was runing as a Republican, you'd vote for him, simply because he's on the Republican ticket. Well, we will not. So you either work your butt off to get Paul in, or you can enjoy 4 more years of Obama, or maybe Romey - whatever, who cares? They are identical in any important way.

Uh, no, it was a campaign appearance.  I don't think universities are in the business of offering honoraria for campaign speeches.  He does so many university campuses for several reasons.  He believes young people are more receptive to his ideas, his YAL chapters and Youth for Ron Paul chapters have been very active on college and university campuses and they organize these visits, plus universities are one of the few places with venues large enough to accommodate the crowds he draws.

Wow... what a well-thought out and articulate comment.

Extremist (you decide which one):

1. Stripping away our rights, one by one via NDAA, SOPA, or CISPA? Or ensuring that our individual rights and freedom are protected according to the constitution? 2. Endless wars and deployments all over the world? Or sensible deployment of our troops according to constitutionally declared wars.3. Bailouts for failed banks and giving untold dollars to banksters? Or holding businesses accountable for their failures by not rewarding them.4. Allowing the Federal Reserve to continue doing whatever it wants without being audited? Or audit the Fed to ensure fiscal accountability.5. Unlimited federal government expansion with no end in sight and no end to the spending in sight? Or responsible limits established on the Feds that will reduce the tax burdens on Americans by enforcing fiscal responsibility.

I wills stop here as much more can be added to the list above. However, instead of making blank statements with no support, how about stating why his views are unworkable and discredited. You mention 100 years ago that his ideas were discredited. How coincidental that almost 100 years ago the Fed Reserve was formed to "stablilize" the dollar. The dollar is now worth 7% of what it was worth in 1913. Hows that "working" for you?

Some of Paul's best policy ideas are ones that obama gave lip service to before his election (the erosion of our personal liberties, our various complexes involving private prisons, the drug war and the military, etc.)..
