UPDATE, MAY 30, 9:21 A.M.: 35-year-old Khuong Anh Nguyen was sentenced to 90 days in jail and three years informal probation after pleading guilty to a single misdemeanor animal cruelty charge. For keeping filthy and unsafe living conditions for five bulldogs and a rabbit in his Garden Grove backyard, where six dead newborn bunnies were found, Nguyen originally faced eight felony counts of animal abuse and up to seven years and eight months in jail with a conviction.

The judge Monday dismissed seven felony charges and knocked the eighth down to a misdemeanor.

ORIGINAL POST, MAY 8, 2:01 P.M.: A Garden Grove man has a pretrial hearing scheduled Monday on charges tied to his allegedly keeping a filthy and unsafe home for five bulldogs and a rabbit in his backyard, where six dead newborn bunnies were also found.

Khuong Anh Nguyen, 35, faces eight felony counts of animal abuse and the possibility of seven years and eight months in Orange County Jail with a conviction.

An animal cruelty call led Garden Grove Police officers to visit Nguyen's residence on Dec. 14. Cops say there was feces everywhere in Nguyen's backyard. A female bulldog was in a cage with four male bulldogs. She cowered in pain as an elastic band around her front legs cut off her circulation and produced the putrid smell of rotting flesh.

Meanwhile, a rabbit was sitting on top of a cage with six deceased baby rabbits inside, drowned in rain water and urine.

All the living animals were put under the care of Orange County Animal Care, whose veterinarians eventually nursed the female bulldog back to health. Accused of being the owner of the animals and keeper of an inhospitable environment for them, Nguyen was arrested Friday and, at last report, remained caged himself in lieu of $50,000 bail.

Here is what they should do....tie a nice, juicy steak to his balls. Then you get the nastiest pit bulls you can find. The first dog to reach his throat gets a special treat.

Animal abusers should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

It seems to me the cultural difference excuse only goes so far.

I eat meat so I can only be so critical of others for raising their own food animals.

There is an obligation for a minimal level of humanity. Doesn't matter if they don't get it, cross the line and get caught, get punished.

Preaching to the choir, I know.
