Over the objections of prosecutors, a mother who went on a drinking binge that ended with the suffocation death of her unattended 2-month-old baby was sentenced today at Westminster Justice Center to a year in jail. Senior Deputy District Attorney Susan Price argued that the seriousness 27-year-old Corrina Atuatasi's crimes and the fact that she endangered her children's lives before warranted a state prison stretch. The maximum penalty she faced was 12 years in the joint.

Atuatasi accepted a court offer to cop to felony involuntary manslaughter, felony child abuse and a sentencing enhancement for causing great bodily injury to a child under 5. After her year in jail, she is to be formally sentenced on Nov. 27 to an additional six months in a live-in alcohol treatment program and one year of a self-help program.

The night of Oct. 30, 2011, Atuatasi watched her baby boy, Aiden Galeai, while her husband and 2-year-old daughter were away visiting family. At one point, the mother left the infant alone in her apartment while she went outside to take a smoke break. A male neighbor then invited her to join his two buddies in his apartment.

Atuatasi started drinking with the trio before returning to her apartment to put Aiden in his car seat and carry him back to the neighbor's unit. The baby was left alone in a bedroom for the next several hours while Atuatasi pounded drinks.

She returned to her apartment with her child around 4 a.m. on Halloween. The baby wound up face down in a pile of clothing, although it is unclear if Atuatasi dropped him there and passed out or if he was purposely placed there. In any event, Aiden suffocated to death.

Atuatasi awoke around 6 a.m. and called 9-1-1 to report she could not find Aiden. Before police arrived, the mother moved her dead baby to the bed. At 9 a.m., she had a blood alcohol level on .23 percent and, after a Garden Grove Police investigation, was arrested.

The Orange County Probation Department had also recommended a prison sentence, according to the Orange County District Attorney's office.

When you have a baby, don't drink. Alcohol severely impedes your decision making skills. I'm sure this woman didn't mean to kill her baby, but he's dead none the less. This is a tragedy that could have been avoided. If you MUST drink that badly, for the love of God, get a babysitter. Is the need to imbibe alcohol more important than the welfare of your child? Poor little baby.

Slightly off topic: here is another mother who caused great harm / death to a child. Yet the OCDA continues to push for further punishment of registered sex offenders under the pretense of protecting children, and if they did it once they will fer sure do it again.

If protecting children were the true motivation, should not mothers be banned from interacting with their children? But that does not make for press like RSOs. Shameless opportunism by the OCDA.

Stop talking trash about Obama or about the sailors in port. You people don't know what you are saying just shut your big smelly caca mouths and don't say nothing. This girl was irresponsible parent instead went out drinking like some lose tramp without taking care of her son. Then he dies what a shame first you carry him 9 months just to throw him away just like that. HOw awful? She needs to stay in prison for a long time.

Another Obama voter in jail,.. no problem, someone else will vote for her twice! If Joe Biden had a daughter it would look like Corrina Atuatasi.

Yeah, that would work. It is a great idea but how long would it be before the ACLU and every other liberal attorney in the world would be in Orange County screaming that it was 1950's China. You can't take a mother away from her kid in a criminal proceeding. It's impossible.

Slightly off topic: try suggesting something that works.

This woman has had drinking problems in the past. DUI's, intox in public, etc. You can look her up on the courts' website. No one is to blame for her actions but herself. If the Judges would actually come down on someone hard for a change maybe people would wise up or in her case grow up and this wouldn't happen. She flat out killed her own kid and it was not an accident. She should well have known that in her wasted state something bad may happen. Thank you Judge Carrillo for doing nothing in this case. She will do about 10 months and then be back endangering everyone in the County. What a joke.

How do you know she was an Obama voter? I am NOT an Obama supporter but often have to laugh at the ridiculous statements made by other non Obama lovers. It seems your problem doesn't lie in his actions (as it should) but in his race, and here apparently the race of his supposed supporters. SHES BROWN - MUST BE AN OBAMA SUPPORTER. ha!!!
