Between Sept. 21 and Nov. 16, 2011, Polar stole a $19,500 check made out to the Newport Beach law firm where she worked as a paralegal. With her roomie's help, the payee's name and the amount of the check were removed, replaced with Pabello's name and the new amount of $285,000.

They later obtained cashier checks for $100,000 and $33,000 from the fraudulent fund to acquire the huge pad in Riverside County.
The thefts were discovered after the issuing bank rejected a check that the receiving bank had processed.
Pabello and Polar, who repaid the bank that was out $42,000 that full amount, originally faced felony charges that could have sent them on a luxury trip to state prison for six years each.
