Jason Redmer Dies at Problem-Plagued West Coast Detox Center in Surf City Neighborhood

West-Coast-Detox-home.jpg
"West Coast Detox and Treatment was created to provide a safe place in which recovery from alcohol and drug addiction could take place," reads the Huntington Beach rehab's home page.

Tell that to Jason Redmer.

The San Juan Capistrano 28-year-old was found dead Monday morning at the facility housed in a single-family home on Yale Circle, a quiet residential street next to an elementary school.

Huntington Beach Police and the county coroner are still investigating the death of Redmer, a patient of West Coast Detox Services, which detoxifies addicts before sending them to treatment facilities.

West-Coast-Detox-logo.jpg
Under state law, West Coast Detox and another sober living home next door are licensed to operate on Yale Circle through 2013, but as far as neighbors are concerned Redmer's death is just the latest black eye since the facility opened last year. Police confirm receiving complaints about spotty supervision and discarded drug paraphernalia.

Many neighbors stormed a Huntington Beach City Council meeting last month, demanding West Coast Detox be shut down. City officials responded that state law ties their hands, at least until a city code is violated.

Councilman Joe Carchio told residents he felt their pain and frustration, according to a Huntington Beach Independent report.

"I agree with you," Carchio reportedly said. "I don't understand it just the way you don't understand it. Let's reopen this thing. There has got to be an answer somewhere. There has to be. Let's see if we can find that for you."

Don Ramsey, who started the facility after a friend's sister was lost to addiction, had no comment on Redmer's death, but he assured the council at that March meeting that steps have been taken to clean up the rehab, including the installation of surveillance cameras. He blamed the paraphernalia discovery on a patient who tossed it over a fence into a neighbor's yard because he was afraid he'd be bounced from the program if he was caught with it. Everyone in the house was then subjected to drug tests that came back clean, Ramsey swore.

The center operator than accused his neighbors of verbally attacked him and threatening him with lawsuits.

"There's a lot of discrimination and prejudice going on," Ramsey is reported to have told the council. "Everybody has got an ax to grind because we're helping people who are trying to stop drugs and alcohol. They should be pointing fingers at themselves. What are they doing to make this community a better place?"

As an alcohol and drug treatment provider of more than 20 years I know first hand that people do, unfortunately die in detox and treatment centers, through no fault of the center. Generally speaking, the people that work in these centers are caring and supportive individuals that will literally bend over backwards to assist someone in their recovery from addiction.

Oh and "jason123" You Stated That Jason Redmer "The Client" Died From "His Small Intested Bursting and He Bleed Out, This Was From All the Drinking He Did" . . . Oh Really? That Must Be Why The State's ADP Investigator Has Concluded That West Coast Detox Services Staff Had Either Contributed to or Caused Jason Redmer's Death, By Not Seeking The Necessary Emergency Medical Services Necessary to Assess and Treat Him Accordingly; After He Ingested Dangerous Drugs (Dead Meds) That Should Have Been Destroyed By Don Ramsey's West Coast Detox Staff, Nurse Ratchett and/or by The Executive Director, Don Ramsey - Himself. However That Would Have Been a Problem, Because Don Ramsey is Never Actually Physically There - Unless Something Happens. Then He Suddenly Sports a Tool Belt and Walks Around "Fixing" Stuff . . .

OK Let's See . . .  "jason123" How Could Jason Redmer Be Sober For Two Weeks As You Stated, When He  Only Patronized the Detox House at West Coast Detox Services FOUR DAYS? Hmm . . . Regretfully, His Mother Left Him in the Care of WCDS on April 12th and By April 16th He Was Dead - I'm Sorry But Isn't That FOUR DAYS?

Hey Anonymous The Client had a medical issue that no one knew about. Check your facts first please.

With today's medication assisted treatment, most addicts can be treated, best and most affordably, in outpatient settings that allow them to experience their drug related conditioned cues while in day long treatment. When programs are adequately staffed with trained professionals and the family is intricately involved in the process, outcomes are far better and cheaper than these residential homes that have popped up. You can't detox someone, safely, from years of using benzodiazepines or even alcohol in a matter of days. They need a slow schedule of titration and medical, psychological and 12-step support. These shysters have opened up to rape innocent family members by creating call centers that are staffed with unemployed real estate salesmen. Tell 'em whatever it takes to get 'em in the door and screw the truth and their well being. There's a program in Temecula that has had four deaths and now face one wrongful death lawsuit. The addiction treatment field should be embarrassed that it has closed its eyes to the obvious truth that the industry has been hijacked by unprofessional, uneducated con artists.

wow, a bunch of angry comments. anger comes from within...i challenge y'all to have a look inside. that is, if you think you can handle it.the same complainers will be mad at the state or gov't for the homeless problem. or the crime problem. or for a rehab not having 100% success rate. it's all the same issue, think about it.reality check, folks.your problem isn't with any of this, it's with yourselves. you just can't see it...

I live in the city of Huntington Beach on the same street as WestCoast Detox Services, and YES IT DOES "DIRTY UP" THE NEIGHBORHOOD.You obviously do not have a Detox Facility parked next door to you. The West Coast Detox Services Owner andOperator Don Ramsey set up a "Detox" house at 6381 Yale Circle. Thenthe family that owns 6371 Yale Circle just happened to LEASE the corner houseto Mr. Ramsey without mentioning it to any one beforehand. So now we have a"Sober" House and a "Detox" House operating together lessthan 50 feet away from an Elementary school. West Coast Detox Services and Mr.Ramsey has created a reputation for themselves by running an operation that isobviously tainted and unsupervised. How is this Right?

SurfCityChick
SurfCityChick

They are NOT a Betty Ford Clinic nor a Hospital. When iseveryone going to get that? These parents entrusted these Idiots with theirson's life hoping and believing that these Shoe Salesmen in Detox Clothing hadthe ability to heal their sons addictions and emotional problems, when in factthey aren't really qualified. Why in the world would the State of Californiaand Junior Brown continue to allow these "Rehabs" or"Detox" houses to operate in a residential area? Morningside andtheir West Coast Detox associates deserves a Big Fat Lawsuit and whatever elsehappens to them! Someone’s life was waisted because these Detox Profiteersreally only care about padding their wallets.

Surfcitychick
Surfcitychick

This is just another example of Great Staffing by Residential Rehabs and their Owners like Mr. Ramsey. MINIMAL OPERATING COST for MASSIVE PROFIT. You and your loved ones are putting your lives at risk by patronizing Residential Rehabs and Detox Houses. Had Nurse Rachette the "House Mother" at WCD had not been asleep at the wheel and monitoring this young man properly - she would've known this young man was in trouble long before he became just another statistic.

@Chandlergregg  And that Medical Issue that Jason had that No One knew about was . . . What? Hmm . . . According to Jason's personal physician - aside from drinking, Jason's body was in very good shape - up until he became a victim of West Coast Detox Services. Maybe it is you who should check your facts first . . . I find it intriguing that you call Jason Redmer a "Client" and seem to think you have some kind of angle on Jason's Personal and Confidential Medical Issues . . .

Surfcitychick
Surfcitychick

Hey King Brainiac . . . Like I said before . . .  NONE of US ARE GOING ANYWHERE . . . DUH - so get used to it. Why should we move? We didn't ask for Don Ramsey and his band of temporary transients to park his ass on our street. I don't think you realize the kind of Neighborhood that you're dealing with. We have all known each other through several generations and for several years; and we stick together through thick and thin. And What, according to you, we are "a Bunch of Busy Body Nimby's" because we staunchly look-out for each others personal property and welfare - and to protect each other from Drug-Addicted Thugs and Thieves? And what kind of a Boob would just assume that we are Liberals? We have a very nice mix of Liberals, Conservatives and Independents all co-existing together pleasantly and peacefully - until a year ago. And we have been way Beyond, MORE than TOLERANT with Don Ramsey and his West Coast Detox Investments. And you said, "If You Don't Like Your Neighbors . . . Move" - Well Back At Cha!

@jason123 Wow! You Are Really Full of Your Self! Since When Did You Become a Licensed Physician and What Credentials Do You Have That Would Make You Able to Correctly Diagnose Jason's Physical Condition or Come Up With Your Own Fabricated Coroner's Report? Jason Had His Own Personal Physician and Was in Great Physical Condition Before His Death Sentence at the West Coast Detox Facility. His Small Intestine DID NOT BURST and He DID NOT Have a Faint Heart Beat Because He Was Already DEAD - That is After They Finally Called Emergency Services. Guess That's Why Fire Department Reported to The Police and Put a Call in For The Coroner's Office. And For the Record, Jason Was Heavily Sedated Even With Out Seeing a Doctor; Immediately Upon His Stay at WCDS. He Died Four Days Later Because He Had Access to the Garage Area, Where Don Ramsey's Relatives Stashed The Party Drugs. You Really Need to Start Telling The Truth and Stop Manufacturing Answers Just to Cover Your Asses. Just Sayin

Surfcitychick
Surfcitychick

With all due respect . . . How could you "Love" someone who was "Just Passing Thru" in a Detox House for a period of seven to ten days? I suppose your going to try and tell me that I just don't understand? Sorry, but I do understand . . . This young man simply belonged in a Hospital - and not left to die in an ill-equipped Detox house.

If the WCDS Detox house is doing such an incredible job and so wonderful, then why isn't it equipped with the latest Life-Saving Medical Devices and Top of the Line Personnel? That's because s-o-m-e-o-n-e isn't spending their profit properly. What a surprise!

Buttercup
Buttercup

Then he should have been in the hospital...so who's negligent here? the Doc who should have been checking on him or the intake center that allowed him admission? Take your pick because they'll all have to answer for it...right on down to the VAN DRIVERS.

it doesnt matter if he was at home or at the detox place he would of passed and no matter what you think, this place was helping him he was sober for atleast 2 weeks,  unfortuately  it was too late :'( jay was a amazing person! so much to live for, hes in a better place and has no more pain,

Hey Rule #62, Old Buttercup (Clumpy Sour Milk) and Surfcitychick (Rotten egg on HB street), are full of "FEAR".  You can't have Faith and Fear coexisting as you know, so lets just not take them to seriously.  They are sick, let's bow our heads and pray.

Buttercup
Buttercup

You can STUFF IT...go "check yourself" dude. The only people who need to look in the mirror are these profiteers who take vulnerable patients and families and rip them off to act like they have competent staff to "treat" their loved one. How do you people sleep at night?

Buttercup
Buttercup

You are exactly right...and they do this so they can run both the "licensed" facility right along side the "Sober Living". They kill two birds with one stone...stick them in the Sober house yet continue to "Treat" them.

Maybe one of these geniuses can tell me HOW in the hell these profiteers can charge 30 grand a month to live in  a SOBER house, where clients are to receive absolutely NO treatment. Why would a family pay that kind of cash for basically monthly rent? They DON'T, they've been lied to by these creeps. and their family members are in danger.

Buttercup
Buttercup

Save your concern buddy, you can cry crocodile tears for the D.A.

Buttercup
Buttercup

Too bad this Rehab were looking at DOLLAR signs instead of signs of impending DEATH.

I hope you DO hear their voices, I hope it keeps you up at night.

Buttercup
Buttercup

Then they should NEVER have admitted him...he should have been sent to a competent hospital detox setting...not some residential house that has a "Nurse" check on them once a week.

Rotten Egg on the Street here - I Have No Fear - But Guaranteed - There Shall be NO Retreat and NO Surrender. And the way this Half-Way Hotel is run, I have No Intention of "Co-Existing" with anyone running a business like this in a residential area. @jason123

Really? You Kept Going On About How Bad This "Imaginary Condition" That Jason R. Supposedly Had - When in Fact His Death Was From a Lack of Supervision That Allowed Him to Access An Unlocked Cabinet of Dangerous Drugs - So He Basically Overdosed and WCDS "Staff" Decided NOT Call The Fire Department and Left Him To "Sleep". And Again . . . He Was Not Monitored Properly When They Knew He Was in Trouble, So He Was in Fact Neglected and Left to Die . . .
