Is The Santa Ana Police Department Collaborating With Scientology? Yes, Says The OC Org's Executive Director; No, Says SAPD

A recent YouTube video features Ed Dearborn, executive director of the Orange County Scientology "org", touting the merits of the organization's Narconon program.

Dearborn says Scientology has been "collaborating with the Santa Ana Police Department on our anti-drug education program, which has been very well accepted by the police departments, particularly Santa Ana, Huntington Beach and a few others."

Readers informed me that the video was pulled from YouTube (hmm), but was immediately posted again by a resourceful, uh,  fan of Scientology. Thanks, Redrider425!

Dearborn was inviting folks to an April 3 anti-drug talk held by Tony Harrelson, deputy police chief of the Santa Ana Police Department.

I spoke with Harrelson today, having received questions from readers who wondered if Scientologists had infiltrated the department. He has seen the video, and said folks have contacted him as well, with similar concerns.

Harrelson often speaks to community groups about drug abuse, and said Narconon has "some of the best" anti-drug abuse literature he has seen, but the information he has looked at doesn't have any references to Scientology in it, and he is "not very familiar with them."

What about a collaboration, as Dearborn puts it?

"It's not like there's any partnership," Harrelson he said.

So that's that. Oh, and a link to the Stop-Narconon.org website run by David Touretzky, a professor at Carnegie Mellon University, a crusader against what he says are the program's unscientific practices.

Narconon Newport Beach stuffed a beach front house with 47 addicts...with 97 more coming for meetings DAILY...has been sued for not obtaining proper city permits, has been sued by "clients" who did not receive the treatment they paid 30 thousand dollars a month for, has been sued for "kidnapping" a client by not letting him contact his family and then dumping him on the street in the middle of the night...the list goes on and on. They finally gave up the house after local residents outed them for their disgusting behavior.

Yep. Sounds like another Sheriff Lee Baca.

"Narconon has "some of the best" anti-drug abuse literature he has seen." Hmmm, that is somewhat of an odd statement for a cop to make. So, if the literature looks good it must mean Scientology and NarConon can't be a fraud or dangerous scam, right?

Maybe the good officer should look into it a little futher, like what's happening in Canada, France, Russia, Australia, or hell, right here in America. He doesn't seem well informed at all, lol. Maybe he needs one of his detectives to figure out what the public already knows.

There seems to be a trend lately, scientology and the police department rubbing elbows... real close. And just imagine, this is where our taxes go.

The police do not need to "build links" with the Scientology community. I wonder? How does one go about finding out who donates money and how much, to the police/sheriff department?

By "some of the best literature" out there, Mr. Harrelson must be attracted by shiny surfaces and bright colors.

Because the CONTENT is ridiculous. It's fanciful garbage from the mind of a pulp fiction hack-slash-con man. How anyone could consider that "some of the best" suggests he didn't read it, or doesn't know the subject.

The OC Weekly's Top Blog stories:  "Long Beach Cop Held for Child Porn Possession", "Gangster gets life for slaying", "Peadophile Hounded into Mental Hospital".............  your weak stories on Scientology fade in comparison.

Narconon is the Nigerian 419 scam of the rehab business. They are Scientology based and prey on peoples weakness and desperation. There are legitimate drug and alcohol rehab programs and Narconon is not one of them. The Santa Ana police would be smart to steer clear of any involvement with the Church of Scientology or Narconon.

public officials need to wise up before associating with Narconon

and not base their opinion on what Scientology tells them

you wont find ANY Narconon Program scientifically supported  by the medical profession.

and Narconons facts and figures are as always BOGUS

A logical and intelligent person would look into this type of nonsense before endorsing and promoting it. Key words: LOGICAL AND INTELLIGENT

Well, looks like they worked Harrelson over, heh? Tell this man to read the internet and see just how 'good' this program is. Narconon kills people. @ deaths in OK within 6 months, 3 in 3 years, one of which was last week, April 10th.  Each was a preventable death. Each needed medical attention and never got it.Narconon is a dangerous, unsound program.

Well, it isn't as if Narconon has had a facility closed this week for being "dangerous to patients."

Wow, it's obvious you don't know very much about scientologys crimes. Google is your friend, type in crimes of scientology, then brace yourself for the shock of your life.

Matter of fact the 24 of April -Tuesday. Jan Eastgate scientologys pedophile protector should be appearing in a Australian court. Is that lured enough for you, children getting molested?

The Narconon program has already been banned from California schools for promoting scientifically unsound information. Shouldnt the police do at least as much due diligence as the school board before promoting something?
