Friday's Dateline NBC Targets Newport Beach Murder By Ex-NFL Linebacker

Naposki: rare moment when his mouth is closed
The good folks at Dateline NBC have announced plans to air their "mystery" Friday night about the ex-National Football League (NFL) player convicted last year for the cold-case ambush murder of an ultra-wealthy businessman in Newport Beach.

I covered the trials of Eric Naposki--the big mouth, former New England Patriot and Indianapolis Colts' linebacker, and his slutty, two-timing girlfriend at the time of the killing, Nanette Packard, and expect Dateline to expertly weave together a fascinating visual tale of a sensational crime that rocked the ritzy, oceanfront community in December 1994.

Go HERE and HERE to read some of my past coverage of the case. And read on for more...

The CBS 48 Hours' version that aired last October was a disappointment because their plot line inexplicably omitted several key incriminating facts developed by homicide prosecutor Matt Murphy and in the process left viewers with the absurd notion that Naposki might be innocent of the murder of William McLaughlin.

The Dateline version will be told by Keith Morrison, arguably the best on-air story teller on national television nowadays.

From his cell inside the Orange County Jail, Naposki--who is scheduled to be sentenced May 18 with his accomplice--has been claiming he's--one guess--innocent and knows the identity of the real killer.

(Most criminal defendants facing life in prison try to divert attention away from themselves before they get convicted. Naposki chose a puzzling route. He decided to talk after a jury officially labeled him a murderer.)

According to sources, Packard declined to appear on the show, but her chatty public defender, Michael Hill, gave an interview.

I soooo badly wanted to see this episode but missed it. Anyone know where I can see it online? I followed the case and bummed out at having missed the episode, I did do a quick read through of the Facebook comments made as the show aired (on the Dateline page). Seems like all the ladies loved the surfing shots. There were women talking about how hot Murphy was (I agree!! Half the reason I'm so annoyed I missed this episode!) and noticing he wasn't wearing a wedding ring. I think the surfing comment was made by a Naposki or Johnston family member or friend. Anything to attack the prosecution, especially since they can't do it with actual facts about the case. 18 hour days does seem odd though. When does the man have time to sleep, let alone eat, groom, commute, go to the bathroom, surf (lol), have sex, run errands, or spend time with friends and family? If the man really works that hard, he deserves a medal. But it's also kinda sad because that hotness should be shared around. Maybe he sucks in bed. Bwuahaha.  I can't wait til this scumbag (Naposki) is sentenced in August. He's dragged this out waaay too long. Wasn't there talk about him getting a new trial at some point? Hope not. Time for him to start doing time properly. He's mucked around too long.

The whole thing is a circus now -- Eric and Nanette did not do it -- Kevin McLaughlin hired a gun for hire to do it -- then the killer approached Kevin for almost five years -- taking money from him year after year. When Kevin was going to turn him in, the killer turned on Kevin and had him drowned

I watched the Dateline story and the real embarrassment was the video of Matt Murphy surfing? What the hell did that have to do with the case? He humiliated himself and his office. After seeing that  clip of him surfing like my 6 year old son, I can honestly say this case is officially a "circus".

I happen to think that the Dateline story was well told and point on....  Great job NBC and Keith.

Bill McLaughlin's daughters are class acts. Beautiful human beings indeed.

Wait, aren't Keith Morrison and Kelly Lange the same person?

Moxley, what are you smoking?

If you consider, sappy, over the top cliche' plot twists and Dateline Drama your kind of thing .. then I understand. :)

He's my fav too, but not for the same reasons ...

Really? I was Kevin's girlfriend at that time. I never heard him utter a cross word about his father.

Nice try, you troll.

The "circus" was that those two, Nanette and Eric the Meathead, went on with their lives, without a care in the world for over 15 years. They procreated with reckless abandon, each bringing two more innocent children into the world (their additional victims in this sad, sad case), for a grand total of NINE children between them.

They care nothing about others, including their own children. They had no business bringing children into the world with this hanging over them. They'll have quite a long time to think about not only what they did to the McLaughlin family, but their own.

I thought the whole surfing scene was pretty lame too.  If I remember correctly, when either Dateline or 48 Hours featured Skylar Deleon, I'm pretty sure Matt Murphy surfed in that one too.  I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure he did!!

I'm with you, Eric.  I love Keith Morrison.  I also loved that SNL bit on Keith about "MURDER"......That was fantastic......

Tell you what, Eric: If Keith blatantly manipulates the facts to lie to a national audience about the case like the CBS 48 Hours report, then get back to me about your whining. If that doesn't happen on Friday, then yes--I'll take what you call "sappy."

Well, say what you want about Matt Murphy's sport of choice, but the guy works 18 hours a day. Minimum.

Moxley ..  whining? was that a joke?  A sense of humor might help you understand infotainment in television a bit more.  What DL-NBC and Morrison do is little more than a JOKE and have been for a long time - hence SNL's spot on satire of him.  When it comes to journalism and/or accuracy -  that was my humorous point.    DL-NBC or 48-HRS have not been in the journalism business for a long time.  SNL makes the point better than I ever could.  Sorry you'll have to let me know, I don't watch bad entertainment pretending to be journalism.  When I want entertainment I seek out quality entertainers.  LIke SNL for example.
