Built to resist a 7.0, MANY times stronger than a 4, being an exponential scale.

Each increase by 1 in magnitude being about 31, so the difference in energy = about 31**3 (31 X 31 X 31), so a 7.0 would be just about 30,000 times as strong.

I'm not a physics major so I probably got some details wrong but qualitatively this is right.

I'm off the 73 toll-road & La Paz in Laguna Hills, it was strong here I live in solid buildings and lasted about 20 seconds. Seems like this was around a 4.5 or 5.0....

I'm in North Laguna & I definitely felt it too. Started out slow & then a big rumble made me realize it wasn't the construsction workers down the road.

You may have felt the arrivals of the two types of waves produced in earthquakes: "P" (pressure: compressional - faster) and "S" (shear: side-to-side - slower) (working from memory, largely right, corrections gratefully accepted).

They travel at different speeds through the crust and at some distance can be easily felt as two distinct sets of shaking.
