A family argument in Seal Beach escalated to the point where a 21-year-old man whipped out a 5-foot-long samurai sword and lunged at a woman who managed to escape unharmed, according to police.

Andrew Baoan Nguyen left the home after Monday's sword act, but he was later arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon and possessing and being under the influence of cocaine.

This all went down around 4:30 p.m. Monday in the 4400 block of Elder Avenue. A Seal Beach police officer patrolling that area was flagged down by family members who reported the incident.

Nguyen's description was broadcast, and sheriff's deputies spotted him driving on the 405 freeway near Seal Beach Boulevard.

According to Seal Beach Police, Nguyen's vehicle was followed until he started heading back toward Elder Avenue. He was then pulled over and arrested.

Cops are still trying to piece together exactly what happened. Anyone with information that can help the investigation is asked to call Seal Beach Police Det. Gary Krogman at 562.799.4100, ext. 1108 or email him at gkrogman@sealbeachca.gov.
