Ruiz (at right): Wonder if he has a "Reconquista" finishing move?
This story's going to get the Know Nothings happy: Jesse Ruiz, an American-born wrestler from SanTana who attended school at Valley High School and Santa Ana College, a former collegiate champion who's currently a volunteer assistant at The Citadel, made the 2012 Olympics...for Mexico

Ruiz qualified this past Sunday at the FILA Pan American Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Florida, where he finished second in his class and thus made it.

The sound you heard was Barbara Coe choking on her cigarette.

Here's an interview right after his victory:

Congrats! Unanswered, though is why he's representing Mexico in the first place instead of the ol' USA...anyhoo, expect Ruiz to get a lot of press 'round here come Olympics time...and the Reconquista continues!

The italians do this all the time and they never got half there land stolen by the usa. I see 3rd and 4th italian generation atletes who refuse to play for the us soccer team and baseball teams. I hope Jesse wins the Gold.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Can we please not portray this event as an act of treason against the United States, or a statement of support for the "Reconquistas," by Olympic wrestler Jesse Ruiz?

As far as I know, Jesse Ruiz has never tossed the American flag into a gutter, led any kind of movement demanding the takeover of the US by Mexico, or pledged his allegiance to Mexico over the United States.

Ruiz is simply a professional wrestler pursuing an opportunity to fulfill his dreams just like any other sports star.  To bogusly turn this news into an argument about racial supremacy and cultural domination is rediculous.

The guy is an American citizen who accepted an invitation from Mexico to represent that country as a wrestler in the 2012 Olympics.   End of story.

I think this is awesome.  For those of us born in the USA, from Mexican parents, it is an honor to call ourselves Mexican.  For me, it's an honor that a Mexican American is representing Mexico because, just like we are American for being born here, we are also Mexican. To me Jesse is not only representing a country, he is representing us.  This is definitely an honor for his parents.

this happens quite often in soccer....there are many examples of US born players , playing for the Mexican national team ( ...and even an example of a US born soccer player playing for the Italian National Soccer team ( Giuseppe Rossi)

Why is this a race issue to you?

Probably because he couldn't make the US squad--I don't mean that as any sort of put down, but it's pretty common for people that can claim dual loyal... I mean dual citizenship, to compete for their 'mother country' when they can't make the US team.

Funny thing is, I think this is great -- it shows that 'birthright citizenship' really has no place in today's world -- specifically, the child born within the boundaries if the US to Mexican citizens is--Mexican.

WELL SAID JIM!!!  I know Jesse since he was six years old. His family is very humble, his dad is an Agronomist Engineer from Mexico, and he was invited to wrestle for team Mexico. They are very happy for Jesse's accomplishment and I think that when someone makes the olympic's team for any country whether they were born there or not it's a big accomplishment and therefore it should be applauded. Sometimes you have to make decisions like this to see your hard work pay off. I know sometimes I have a dilemma when my favorite sport's team( in any sport) its playing a team that has a player I like and I want that particular player to play good but my favorite team to still win the game!!

well said Ramona.People have to understand that we are brothers and we will always be family meaning the US and MEXICO. We are strong nation together. Congratulations Jesse and just remember that you are a winner already for being able to represent both nations.

In 2008 I think it was, beísbol was an Olympic demonstration sport. Italy fielded a team with something like 20 of 24 guys being Americans -- third generation Americans.

No, he'll be 'representing' Mexico. In fact he'll likely face American wrestlers. Who will you root for?

thats not entirely true.  There are no US players currently playing for the Mexican national team.  There are, however, US players on Mexican club teams.  Edgar Castillo comes to mind.  And Joe Corona...who plays for the US under 23 and has played for the under 23 Mexican national team

lol "beginning of time" I know I would not want to ever associate myself with this individual, and it has nothing to do with race or nationality.  Stupidity is a choice and the gentleman above chooses to be stupid.
