Hector Villagra, executive director of the ACLU of Southern California, is charting a path to a stage at Disney's Grand California Hotel in Anaheim, where he will accept the Hispanic Bar Association of Orange County's Attorney of the Year award Saturday. He has weighed or been involved in several high-profile legal fights, including those surrounding religion, immigrant rights and gang injunctions, even the alleged murder of Kelly Thomas.

"The Attorney of the Year Award recognizes an outstanding attorney who has made a significant contribution to the legal community and has enhanced the quality of life for the Latino community," says president Jose Gonzalez in a Hispanic Bar Association of OC statement.

"I am humbled by this recognition," says Villagra, who joined the ACLU of Southern California in 2005 and later launched its Orange County office, in the same release.
