UPDATE, MARCH 21, 2:17 P.M.: The Orange County District Attorney's (OCDA) office has announced the 17-year-old accused of fatally stabbing Edgar Cervantes, 19, of Riverside, in Anaheim Monday night will be tried as an adult.

As such, the OCDA identified him as Ryan Nichols Coale of Anaheim.

He was to be arraigned this afternoon one felony count of murder and a sentencing enhancement for the personal use of a deadly weapon. Conviction could bring a sentence of up to 26 years to life in state prison.

Coale was playing handball with three friends and Cervantes was playing basketball with four friends around 7 p.m. at Sycamore Junior High School in Anaheim. As Cervantes was getting ready to leave, he ran into someone he'd had confrontations with in the past. A shouting match got physical between the two groups, during which Coale is accused of whipping out out a small knife and stabbing Cervantes in the chest.

Cervantes' friends rushed him to Anaheim Memorial Hospital and called 9-1-1 to report the stabbing. He died at the hospital.

ORIGINAL POST, MARCH 20, 2:48 P.M.: A fight on the north side athletic courts at Sycamore Junior High School in Anaheim Monday night led to the fatal stabbing of Edgar Cervantes, 19, of Riverside.

Anaheim cops responding to a 7 p.m. call arrived to find Cervantes nursing stab wound in a car in the lot of the 7-Eleven at North Harbor Boulevard and West La Palma Avenue.

He was rushed to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The murder investigation led police to the campus on East Sycamore Avenue, where they discovered Cervantes had been in a fight. A 17-year-old boy, who was not identified because of his age, was arrested today on suspicion of murder and held at Juvenile Hall.

Meanwhile, Anaheim Police homicide detectives are still piecing together what happened. Anyone who can help them is encouraged to call 714.765.1900.

Did Cervantes drive himself to the 7-11 or was he driven there? I'm asking because Anaheim Memorial Hospital is literally right down the street from the 7-11 on La Palma Ave. So terrible he didn't make it.

The count is based on when the information comes to me. For instance, No. 8 (which I just posted) is based on a murder that happened over the weekend. No . 7 happened Monday night. But I only found out about No. 8 today when the OCDA announced the charges because I was on assignment with another story that preoccupied me. No disrespect intended, sorry you took offense.

The ambulance took him there, but the hospital denied the ambulance and sent him to UCI instead. In my opinion the stupidest action a hospital can ever make in life and death situations!!! I really hope the hospital takes some of the responsibility. 10 extra minutes can have life changing or in this case life ending consequences.
