Orange County Register Lays Off 9, Including Columnist/Most-Loathed-Reg-Reporter-Ever Yvette Cabrera

Yvette_Cabrera.jpg
Just heard from Julio Moran, executive director at the CCNMA: Latino Journalists of California, that the Orange County Register has just laid off nine reporters, including Yvette Cabrera, who happens to be president of CCNMA. We'll see who the other reporters are, but none sting more--and none show how fundamentally fucked-up the Reg is, and what a dark future they face--than the axing of Cabrera.

I have a long, tortured relationship with Yvette. I was there at one of her first-ever assignments for the Reg, an activist at the time while she was covering the debacle that was Harald Martin trying to sue Mexico. She was new to Orange County, and was about to debut as the paper's Latino columnist, a move that would bring her acclaim--and more scorn than any reporter should ever have to face in their career, or any good person in their life.

Yvette was always kind to me, penning articles on various members of my family over the years. I, on the other hand, didn't return the favor, both as part of the Spy vs. Spy game that is the rivalry between the Reg and your favorite infernal rag, and because I always wanted her to be tougher, more radical, more of an Agustín Gurza than a feel-good columnist. Immaturity on my part, I can now say with a bit more years under my belt. But I always understood the importance of Yvette, of having a proud Latina voice at a newspaper in the belly of the Orange County beast--and on that note, I always supported her, even if I didn't always read her.

But because she was a Latina, Cabrera quickly became the most-loathed reporter in the history of the Register, her name becoming code among the Reg's troglodytic readers for a story that dared show Latinos as human beings--in other words, the most disgusting abomination since the election of Barack Obama. A simple story she might do about Latinos--say, a student going to college, or mothers organizing to get healthy--unleashed waves of nastiness better suited for the message boards of Stormfront, and that was just the stuff that was out in public. Who knows what private insults she suffered--yet all along, Cabrera suffered these indignities with class, never lashing out at critics, always keeping that same radiant smile.

When the Reg hired Cabrera, it was at the height of journalism--when every paper had token ethnic columnists who scored hefty salaries yet served an important purpose in documenting their communities in papers that never bothered covering said communities seriously. But once daily papers began their long, sad decline, those ethnic columnists became the first to go--remember when the Reg had Vietnamese columnists? Cabrera's Latino-only column was a victim as well, but at least the Reg let it transition into more of a human-interest beat a couple of years ago. That didn't stop the troglodytes from harassing her.

The Reg should've stuck by Cabrera, at the very least as a token of loyalty (I can name 20 reporters over at Grand Street, some with more years under their belt than her, that are less deserving of a job than Cabrera based on their shoddy journalism) and honestly because she served an important role--hell, she just did an award-winning piece for KCET-TV AND once appeared on Oprah. But now Yvette is gone, and the Reg has just decided to screw over Mexicans in Orange County yet again. They have effectively told the future of Orange County that they have no future in their paper, that their concerns don't matter because their shrinking, coffin-dodging, Know Nothing audience matters more--and they long wanted Cabrera out.

Sources tell the Weekly Cabrera recently had a conversation with Freedom Communications suits in which they assured her that the Reg's finances were hunky-dory--and then the layoff. But good news: they just didn't boot her out the building--they're going to let her return tomorrow or this evening to clean up her cubicle! Hurrah for benevolent bosses!

Vaya con Dios, Yvette. And when you're ready to dish on your moron ex-bosses and the assholes who tortured you so over the years, you know you have a home here...

I justnoticed the absence of Yvette from the OCR and did a search. I was pleasantlysurprised to read she was let go.

Ironically,it's the consistent racism and bias of Yvette and AG that do more harm to racerelations than good.   If they could taketheir race colored glasses off  andreport unbiased facts they could be good reporters and columnists.

Examples:

- Using the'F' bomb

- Being activeand leaders  in groups to promote onlyyour race

- Calling theOCR F'd up and OC Beast

- Incorrectlyassuming she was loathed simply because she was Latina and reporting as factrather than probing and understanding the bias in her reporting.

- You can name20 other reporters that should have lost their jobs - - Who are you to makethat judgment?

Your arrogance, racism and resorting to immature name calling really destroy your credibility.   Sorry bud, but you need to take a hard lookin a mirror before calling others racist.

It is so nice that we no longer have to read this pigs pro illegal articles.

You've made it all about race, not about reporting.  Ms Cabrera may write uplifting pieces about the downtrodden in the Latino community but she rarely afforded her readers an explanation as to how they got where they were (no education, early marriage/pregnancies, unreasonable expectations, etc.).  In other words - poor choices and a lack of personal responsibility, even with the help of our government's generous public assistance.  And Ms. Cabrera was always using her column to expound on her views of undocumented workers and immigration(I could speculate that this was to cater to her readership base).  I'm sorry, but when are these immigration advocates going to call it what it is - not immigration, but illegal immigration - and then read what they write??   I won't be missing Ms. Cabrera's column one bit. And before you label me as racist(isn't that standard procedure?), some background: I'm the son of legal Irish immigrant parents from the 60's and I've been married for 25 years to a Latina whose parents are Mexican and Puerto Rican.   Wouldn't you find it amazing that her family would tolerate someone with my views for over 25 years?

Unsurprisingly, the Weekly's resident adolescent can't get through the first paragraph without dropping an F bomb.

Stay classy, Gus.

My you are thin-skinned.......trolling stories you wrote a week ago.  (In my defense - I just stumbled upon it this evening.)

As to Ms Cabrera, I posted this in another blog........

Yvette “The illegal is never wrong” Cabrera was poisonous.

Too bad. She’s an excellent writer, and has potential to be an excellent reporter. But on the flip side, her biases and prejudices are unmatched. If she can ever temper those she’ll be a star. But it’s probably like asking a leopard to change its spots.

See, I've never blamed my Mexican part for any perceived failures—that's your deal!

"But on to bigger issues. Spread you wings. Get beyond the Hispano-centric. (Advice I gave to Yvette several months ago as well). You have a good franchise with "Ask a Mexican", but it can only go so far. And the incessant troglodyte (troglodytic?) references get tiresome. You're of Mexican descent. Fabulous. What else ya got?

Tavo, I have to agree with J's sentiment. It brings to mind a conversation I had with a mentor of mine once. I was whining to him about my lack of advancement and how I felt it was because I was Mexican. He proceeded to tell me one of the truths that eventually broke me free from the "Hispano-centric" anvil. He said, "Your lack of upward mobility is not attributed to you being Mexican, it is attributed to you being an asshole. The Mexican part is just a bonus for us."

Not a troll, honey: I get paid to read all comments, and no way do I let pendejos like you spew idiocies without a smack back. "Poisonous" describes your presence on Earth.

And let me add that much of what I wrote about Yvette applies to you as well, GA.  Neither of you are anyone's fool.  That is apparent in the first two sentences in either of your writings  (and I'll admit my comment about dropping F-bombs was as much about busting your balls as anything - I am well aware that the standards of a paper like the Weekly are much looser).

But on to bigger issues.

Read some Mencken, learn from a master, and get back to me.  And in 10 years, when you're a superstar on the national stage, tell me about your moment of epiphany in early March of 2012.

My main marketing draw was going to be the fued of Gustavo Racist Mexican against the pro Democracy writer. It will draw in a lot of readers. you like it I am ever racist denise the menace.

I get a job there and it is on holmes the Democracy society against your racist power society. I write like a storm against you each time.

I am still applying to OC weekly for a writing job. However, obviously no Democracy citizen with muti cultures willing to write against the Mexican Pride writer Gustavo is allowed in. As my specific in firm issue would be every time Gustavo wrote for pro Mexican pride I would write for another ethnicity pro pride, like American Indian, EU, Asian something. They not hire me.

Inside of our local cognitional institutions your not going to power up without equality to proper other races power up. That is Democracy legal and proper in this country. When i see imbalance my friend I will equate it. Guess what I am Pro Americano USA Democracy holmes eh sherlock that is every ethnicity not your Mexican Pride eh?

Economic Warfare Ins

I am glad you are proud of where you come from. But you are not the only vota or should I say   téigh i bhfeighil  who is proud of their heritage too. The only difference is the teigh in this area are proud of all and try and equate and balance. So far from research nobody else in these two papers is powering up like you and her where. There is no African Society writing here, there is no EU society writing here. Just you two pendjas very racist and powered up. So you know equality is equality and this teigh is being heard. Cause I want balance of opinions. I do not like pro racist go race articles. I like Democracy articles like the other writers in maps. So if you want power equality of power will happen as we are a Democracy.

Economic Warfare Ins

you and your best ally in this rag timer destroyed our only US secret defense fund against fascist racist regimes in the world by reporting on it. Good job holmes sherlock is great stuff. But in reality if there are two major papers and both have power writers. Other powers get a chance to write holmes. This is a Democracy.

Economic Warfare Ins

where is your opposition in all this Gustavo. Mr. Mexican Pride, Mexico ruler racist society leader. Where is the EU society in all of this, where is the Indian society, where is the American Indian Society, where the writer who writes for Democracy and not racism. Where is the writer who leads a society that is not racist writing. Where is the writer who writes for the African's. I see no articles writen pro African in this or any Orange County paper. Why is it that the majority of writers in this community are pro illegal immigrant and pro Mexican Nationalist. While the rest of society should not have a say and both competeting papers should have to very penja gringo racist writers writing every day for their racist wars while nobody else gets a say. I am curious why racist writers like you in a Democracy are allowed such pride. Its amazing to me. The other writers are not Pro Vietnam, they are not pro Scotland, they are not Pro Africa you and this writer always wrote on matters of pro Mexican Nationalist. I am curious why do you not push for more diversity in power in your local newspapers. I find it upsetting daily seeing Pro Mexican Nationalist articles where there is no EU national articles, No Indian, No American Indian, No Spanish, nobody yet but in each paper I see both very racist Mexican writers. Your not even Mexican you are Spanish decadents from the EU.

I'd never thought I say this Tavo, but this is probably the only article of your's that has not incited my disdain for you and actually allowed the seeds of respect to begin forming for you in my literary heart. So, althoug my MeCha days are long behind me, in honor of Yvette, who you are correct, is a class act, here it goes "Viva La Raza". Yvette, you will be missed as the balancing voice of reason to Tavo's continous caustic cry for revolucion. Yvette, please take Tavo up on his job offer, as may then, he will be forced to read your articles under the safe guise of his editorial responsibilities.

lol.. yvette cabrera writes like the affirmative action hire that she is. her prose is equivalent to that which a 10th grader would use and the only reason she was on the oc register was to diversify the paper.  all of her stories revolved around illegal mexicans and their hardship at the hands of "racists".   did you expect the non-mexicans to embrace her?  what you illegal lovers dont understand is that you although the politicians have sold out, the american people will not put up with an influx of uneducated, immoral and ungrateful peasants..

That's the word I was searching for, Gustavo, thank you :  troglodytic. I had never seen such hatred and knuckle-dragging ignorance until getting a load of the angry white men who post on there. (How do I know? Oh, just guessing wildly...)  It's shocking what people will write to each other under cover of anonymity. With Facebook, it's a little better now, but people still make up identities and say the most disgusting things ("Mick Shrimpton" among them). Yvette's topic choices and apparently her very existence always seemed to bring out the worst of the worst. I am so very sorry to see her leave. She was an advocate for the people you don't read much about. I could not fully hate the REG because of the balance Yvvette provided. Now all that is changed. The REG truly is a soulless, money-grubbing rag among rags.

I've officially given up in the OC Register. Of ALL the ignorant white guy journalists they employ they have to lay off the one person who gave me hope.. Sometimes after reading the opinion editorials I immediately run to the bathroom to projectile vomit.

Gustavo, just hire her already.  Her opinions will fit perfectly here so will not be called on when she tries to call her articles news instead of opinions. For years her articles have seemed like nothing more than pieces intended to stir up the readers and get them to comment since the facts she quoted were "unverified" at best and amazingly always seemed to show how evil white Americans were at the expense of the poor Hispanics, especially those who are here "semi-legally" since we cant call them illegal without being racists.  She LOVED to show how immigrants were being unfairly treated by the US government's laws, but rarely used "illegal" as a way to scare those who are legal.   When called out on it she played the same "racist" card that we hear thrown around here too often. But, hey, I am one of those people who disagree with you and her so get called a teabagger or racist regardless of my political party or whom I voted for in the last elections.

And then they wonder why everyone is asking the question as the where all the jobs at when the suits and jackets are laying people off for stupid petty stuff that they themselves have done as well other things that are possibly far worse. Don't be a dummy save the money, either that or steal it from the layed off employees.and put if back in the coffers. Anything to keep from allowing someone else to suffer besides themselves. Where are the jobs that have been created? I would not know because even I am still looking for just one of them even after being passed over and rejected for one stupid reason or another.

The print media is dying on the vine.  How many times have we asked a friend, "did you read so and so in the paper?"  The usual response now is no, they don't take a paper.  When I read a newspaper now, I've usually already read the articles on line, it's old news and that's what the print news is now, usually old.  Have you noticed how little there is to a newspaper now, thin, few ads any more.  Just look at the reporters bailing on the Register, two to local employee groups and Greenhut to Sacramento somewhere.  It's a trend and its not over yet.
