UPDATE: True Food Kitchen says the offending receipt is a Photoshop job. More info at the end of the story!

ORIGINAL POST FEB. 24, 2:30 P.M.
; Here in beautiful Orange County, we are one of the capitals of the One Percent, of the people who despise those who don't make six-figure salaries or drive those shitty gray Mercedes that you find everywhere from San Clemente to Brea. But there's being a One-Percenter, and then there's openly mocking those who serve you, which is what happened this month at True Food Kitchen in Newport Beach, where a guy left a buck-and-change tip on a $134 bill with the added advice to the waitress: "Get a Real Job."

Twitter user @FutureExBanker

The tweet that went with this photo:
twitter_shot_true_food.png

The person's blog doesn't say much about their boss's identity other than the following confessional:

I work in the corporate office of a major bank for a boss who represents everything wrong with the financial industry: blatant disregard and outright contempt for everyone and everything he deems beneath him.

On top of that, he's a complete and utter tool.

TOTALLY sounds like Don Bren--but he ain't a banker. Who could it be???

In the meanwhile, gracias, anonymous banker, for making Orange County look even more toolish...

UPDATE: According to the Smoking Gun, True Food Kitchen located the original copy of the above receipt...and what you see above is a Photoshopped® version of the real one. Those of you who despise the 1% will just have to get your jones off on other horrible-tips-in-OC-by-the-rich stories like this one that happened last year.

Still begs the question, though: who paid for the True Food meal? Who doctored it, and for what reason? OC ain't exactly filled with merry pranksters, and the Occupy movement wouldn't travel to Newport Beach if you spotted them the bus fare down Jamboree. "FutureExBanker"--what say you?

Who knows if it is a hoax or not?  Maybe True Foods is saying this because they don't want the publicity and are trying to distance themselves from the situation.  They might not want to have their restaurant's name out there in terms of exposing customer's tipping habits and security.

It was probably some asshole trying to get press coverage. It seems it worked.

Hoax or not? After so much ink spilled words alone won't do.The receipt above looks like original. It has all the proper angles, handwriting impressions and clear background which would not survive photocopying. If it was doctored, it was a masterful editing job. We need to see the other claimed original to compare and decide.

We’re glad to respond to the news stories about a tipping incident at True Food Kitchen in Newport Beach. Our first concern is with our staff, we are very fortunate to have employees that are talented, bright, and undoubtedly, some of the best in the business.

Wow, I would have been like, get a real job? Really? Like it isn't a real job to carry around HUGE trays of food to be consumed by priggish, stupid people who do nothing but complain about everything they get even if I followed their instructions to the very letter. Like it isn't a real job to spend all eight (or more) hours running from one place to the next, burning my hands on hot coffe cups and plates, my feet aching, my back hurting and all the while having to have a sweet smile and a kind word on my lips. Like it isn't a real job to hae to go home late at night and walk to my car, hoping that I don't get mugged for what tips I busted my ass to earn that day, because the restaurant doesn't have a secure parking lot. And all the while, you sit in your pretty office, with your suits and your manicured nails and have the nerve to say,"Get a REAL job??? You get a real job, Mister!!!

I want to know this person's bank, and his car's plate number. I will beat his 1% ass! I will key his car to hell. I will punch him in the face. Oh and I live near Newport Beach so I am really looking, I really am going to beat his ass!

I am concerned about this Banker. As the Huffington Press so correctly points out - "As many have noted, a true 1% tip correctly rounded to the nearest penny would have been $1.34, leaving this tip just shy of that threshold, mathematically speaking."

Should bankers who cannot do math be allowed to care for our money? Which bank does this mathematically-challenged person represent?

Huh? Hello!  Since when does a restaurant not want publicity??? The fact is :  It's a friggin HOAX.  Pathetic, albeit successful publicity stunt to project the so-called 1% as being greedy.  I hope the wannabe journalists who ran with the original crap story get fired. Did they even check sources?

Jon

On a closer look, only the "Get a real job" part looks a bit fishy because of extended "halo" around it, though this could be an image compression artifact due to bolder impression.

The printed total "$133.54" does not seem to be altered.Would like to see the receipt without "1" in the total to confirm.

Typical of OCW. Why bother to research  before posting? Then, dig up an old story that was true (hopefully, since BOD is up Gus' ass) as some kind of validation. No Pulitzers here.

Restaurant's wouldn't want the publicity of sharing their customer's tipping habits and breaching credit card security.  Who know if this is a hoax or not.  I'm sure that True Foods or their corporate office, etc. has encouraged Breanna to not comment on the matter though.

Yes, I do believe it is a hoax, I was fooled most likely!  But who cares, whoever did this timed it perfectly with the Occupy movement so that's one clever person!  It got national attention!

You are exactly right. You aren't going anywhere. Which is a great thing for everyone. Because if you did, someone might actually mistake you for a real journalist. You freely admitted above that you have no journalistic integrity, and the only way you get people to read and/or respond to your postings is to piss people off. You truly are the Tom Lykis of alternaitve newspapers. And the funny thing is, you still have readers who take you seriously. People, he's purely here for your entertainment. He has a role, and he plays it.
