Scientology Strikes Back Against Former Spy--But Do Commendation Letters Prove Ex-Spy Right?

Last week's cover story and subsequent Navel Gazing post on the Church of Scientology garnered a fair amount of comments from OC Weekly readers.

And some may recall that your humble scribe was called out by Karin Pouw, a Scientology spokeswoman, for not immediately responding to her request for an email with questions prior to running the Paulien Lombard story, in which Lombard said the church sent her out to spy on critics. (Oh, and the glaring lack of reference to my phone calls to the church in Los Angeles seeking comment before the story ran.)

In the midst of it all, I received an email from Lombard, saying she was never involved with, nor has she heard of the Scientology Parishioners League, of which Pouw alleges Lombard was a part. Pouw also said while in this group, Lombard "took some initiatives" with other parishioners against religious discrimination, bigotry and hatred.

The kerfuffle stems from my questions to Pouw as to whether it indeed sends spies to collect data on its critics.

Lombard told me in her email that her effort to spy on Francois Choquette was an order from the Office of Special Affairs, and that Scientology doesn't "like to be connected to things like this since they know it gives them a bad reputation towards the general public."

She went on to say that a woman in charge of the OSA (also referred to by Scientologists as the Department of Special Affairs) named Mari Murillo had told her "that if anyone ever asked me who had given me the order to go out to Lake Elsinore to harass Francois, that I should say that I did this on my own initiative, nothing to do with the church."

I followed up with Pouw through an email Thursday, asking if she had evidence that Lombard was a part of the Scientology Parishioners League, and if the church in Los Angeles or Orange County (which previously referred me to Los Angeles for official comment on the cover story) had sent Lombard to Choquette's home. On Friday, I emailed Pouw again, saying I would be posting another story today. Pouw replied by email Saturday, saying she responded by way of a letter for publication that was sent to my editor, and I would receive a copy as well. The letter is scheduled for the Weekly's print edition this Thursday.

"I really don't have anything more to add at this time," Pouw said.

Here's a part of Pouw's emailed letter, most of which reiterates the talking points the Weekly posted last week:

"Josh Dulaney's article on Scientology (February 22 online) misinformed readers through inaccuracies and by inadequately representing the Church's response. The subject of the article, Paulien Lombard, was a member of a group of parishioners who organized themselves to protect their churches, much the same as a neighborhood watch will warn families of criminals and sexual predators."

Pouw repeats the claim that Lombard was part of a group that organized themselves to, as Pouw phrases it, "protect their churches."

We will let Weekly readers judge for themselves, while taking a looksy at the following two letters of commendation allegedly sent from an Orange County church leader to Lombard, who said she received them after spying on two Scientology critics. Lombard provided the letters to me, and said the first one refers to the work she did on Choquette. She said the second letter is related to the spying she says she did in 2009 on a Laguna Beach woman, who has since identified herself as Patricia Curtis Susan Elliott.

Karin, please grow a pair and walk out the door. There is help and support out here if you need it. Kindness, compassion and understanding (remember those?) You won't be alone. There is also standard Scientology out here should you want to get moving again. Route out or blow, just keep your head held high. And whilst you may be threatened with the loss of "friends" and family members, it will only be temporary. The sooner the ship sinks the sooner the remaining families/friendships DM has ripped apart can be restored. It is happening here, every single day. More and more Scientologists are leaving his group. You know they are. You can too.

Miscavige is destroying a technology that you and I both know has value, Karin. You see it. You can reclaim your decency and your integrity and help prevent him from doing so. First step? That door over there...walk through it. Keep walking. Run if you need to, and don't look back.

Freedom awaits.

Good job, Mr. Dulaney. Those letters are authentic.

See Karen Pouw lie. See Karen Pouw lie again and again . This is what she is trained to do.

Must see video - google "The Scientology Parishioners League: XENU TV"Mark Bunker writes: "Tory Tells how the VP of Scientology Told her she was the ED of The Scientology Parishioners League and what they did and why she soon after LEFT FOREVER."

If I were DM I would throw Karin Pouw in The Hole for screwing this up by lying and getting caught. Now DM has to fix this like everything these incompetent spokespeople fail at just like Rinder and Davis. Throw Pouw into The Hole!

Thank you Josh and OC Weekly for helping to expose some of the BS that is going on in our backyard. I say some because there is so much more to expose. A new horror story seems to pop up every day about this sadistic scam organization. Hopefully more and more citizens will be made aware of these crimes.

With all the testimonies about physical abuse by the leader of this cult, the brainwashing, The Policy of Disconnection, the human rights violations, and child slave labor practices, it's time for the leaders of this cult to be prosecuted and for the (church-lol) to be taxed if not completely removed from society.

Let's take one more lesson from the French. They have successfully prosecuted the Church of Scientology and fined the Church as well as its employees. They have officially deemed Scientology a Fraud.

This is Susan, the target of spying here.  Around the time the stakeout of my house took place, I had a lot of dental work done.  At subsequent protests I was asked by the Scientology handlers how my teeth were.  I thought it was strange, because my teeth are fine.  Later, I put it together that they must have seen me go to the dentist or something.  Only in the Scientology world is it a crime to go to the dentist.

That said, I've talked to Marie Murillo, and some of the others at the Tustin org, and I don't have bad feelings for her.  She is trying to make a living, while holding on to her faith, and her belief in her church.  I just wish she and other members would take a look at the statements of so many Scientologists, including top executives and OT-8s who HAVE done the research and have found that there is something terribly wrong.

I saw the video of Paulien speaking at the Riverside County Board of Supervisors meeting. It was a brave and moving thing she did. She spoke with such clarity, directness and intelligence.

We understand that most Scientologists who get into this aren't on any power trip to rule the planet. Members end up making such sacrifices to try to live up to the standards Hubbard's system imposes on them, very gradually, often in fear of losing family members, friends, or their "eternity."

There are a lot of people on the outside who are interested in lowering crime and drug use etc. We just don't believe Hubbard had any of the real answers, but instead played on people's desire to help.

I also understand that some ex-members end up too shattered or guilty for some of the things they did, like spending money on auditing that should have been set aside for their children's education, and they just pick up the pieces without speaking out. That is okay too.

However, as a critic, I appreciate and am inspired by ex-members like Paulien. If each ex-member could do just one thing half as brave as Paulien did, it might not save the world, but it will go a long way in correcting the injustices that happen connected to Scientology. It can't be easy, standing up to a billion dollar cult like this, when they have all that information on you.

But hey, what if we don't have multiple lifetimes, and instead this is it? You've got to make the most out the life we have in this lifetime.

Thank you Paulien for exposing the TRUTH!!!!   The church of Scientolog and its spokeperson "Karin Pouw are absolutely the biggest LIER.  I know Paulien personally. She is one of the most amazing and honest human beings I have ever known.  As an ex-member of Orange County org/church, I have witnessed all the dirty tricks that Mari Murillo (DSA, Office of Special Affair Orange County), Cliff Miller (Information Data Analysis Officer, OSA), Yvonne Prince (OT 8 who also spies for the church in Orange County) have used well-intended people such as Paulien to do their dirty work.  Just like their criminal leader David Miscavige.  More people are exposing the church of Scientolog's abuses and criminality towards its members and mankind.  They should be shut down and their leader and his best friend (Tom Cruise) another criminal who is pimped for by David Miscavige should be behind bars/Jail soon.Thank you OC Weekly for exposing the truth.

Karin Pouw,

You and OSA are lying dumbasses. Do you honestly think anyone believes your whiny letters of excuses. Quit trying to dead agent Paulien Lombard! You need to stfu leave the darkside of lies and come into the light of truth.

Let's face it, more and more people are leaving your hell hole, more and more stories like Paulien's will be coming out so get use to it. You look like a fool sending letters to the media and threatening them. People are getting tired of this cloak and evil dagger shit, grow up or get off our rock and find your own planet.

I applaud the exodus of brave, honest, strong, former members. It's about time they rise up against your despised cult. They need not be loyal to you, only loyal to themselves and to their families who deserve a life of freedom and love.

So, give us your tired, your poor, your huddled masses, yearning to breathe free, we wait open armed with pure hearts to receive them.

Hey Clif Miller, nice letter of commendation. You didn't spell Paulien Lombard's name right. Word clear it next time you'll be surprised what it means, "heroine."

Funny thing about scientologists, is when they lie, they get caught in their lies.  That's cuz their cult founder (who is well documented on record to recommend lying) didn't foresee the internet, which promotes transparency.  And makes it easy to spot lies.  Poor scientologists.

We'll be waiting expectantly, with much theta, for that letter from braindead lettercreature Karin Pouw. She always has amazingly stupid and irrelevant things to write, about their building projects.

OSA? What OSA, right Karin? She's never heard of OSA or Xenu, but did you hear? The Hamburg "Org" got a new sign and interior paint job. It's all very exciting.

And don't forget to tell us how the cult quadrupled in size, the very month Paulien stopped spying for the cult. That kind of thing is so credible.

Karin! Are you ever going to be on TV? We'd like you to talk about reg cycles and writing KRs on people who wont' take out loans to fund this expansion of empty brainwashing Orgs.

P.S. I bet you're more ecclesiastical than Tommy. I can tell from your goofy writing.

It looks like the church is doing excellent work warning neighbors of possible dangers. Right now there is an Australian national named Jan Eastgate, head of a Scientology front group called the Citizens Commission on Human Rights. She is awaiting trial in Australia for covering up the sexual assult of an 11 year-old girl by a member of the church. Maybe the OSA/DSA could distribute some flyers or go door-to-door warning her neighbors of a possible threat. Karin, if you wanted to bypass the flyers and whole door-to-door thing, how about an interview about the subject. If you're not up to it, maybe David Miscavige will come out of press seclusion and give Josh a one-on-one and clear everything up.

And, not to alarm anyone, but Scientologists are likely your "neighborhood watch". More and more I am seeing groups of scilons forming these watch groups. If you want to know if someone is a scn, just Google them (there is a website listing most members)
