John Tran Nguyen, Ex-Basketball Coach, Accused of Unlawful Sex with 14 y.o. Student

Authorities are reaching out to the public for possible victims of John Tran Nguyen, a 21-year-old former high school basketball coach who is facing criminal counts for allegedly having been involved in an ongoing sexual relationship with a female student since she was 14. Currently out on $20,000 bail, the Fountain Valley resident could get three years in state prison if he is convicted of one felony count of unlawful sexual intercourse and one misdemeanor count of domestic violence battery.

Nguyen, who was a contract assistant girls' basketball coach at Los Amigos High School in Fountain Valley, is accused of meeting and dating the girl during the 2010-2011 season. He had unlawful sex with her in his vehicle in December 2010, and they had an ongoing sexual relationship thereafter, according to the Orange County District Attorney's office.

The end came in January of this year, when Nguyen allegedly slapped the girl in his vehicle that was parked outside a convenience store before school hours. She later told officials at Los Amigos High what happened, and the Fountain Valley Police Department was notified. Following an investigation, Nguyen was arrested on Jan. 20. He is scheduled to be arraigned Feb. 23 in Westminster.

In the meantime, law enforcement wants to determine if Nguyen had unlawful sex or acted criminally inappropriate with others. If that's you or someone you know, contact Fountain Valley Police Det. The slapping is unacceptable... the other charge - it takes two to tango. And a 14 year old can (and recently has in Orange County) be charged and convicted as an adult. Can't have it both ways....

well, to be honest, they were in a relationship. and they are only 3 years apart. and of course the media would want the story to be more appealing since they stated as a 14 year old. it as if a freshman dating a senior in high school. but the senior becomes a coach the next year so i dont see what is the problem. there are girl dating men ten years older than them and you dont see a news article about it. its just the label that he was a coach who was intimate with a girl who was 3 years younger.

First place I saw this story was on the OC District Attorney's web site (2/9) - it seems that all other media have copied the story from there. 'Unlawful Sexual Intercourse' is charged when the minor is under 18, the least severe. Sex with someone under 16 is (typically) not charged as 'Unlawful Sex', but as a 'Lewd Act' with the appropriate age group and much more serious. So the headline does not fit what is being charged. It would appear that the accused was an adult and the 'victim' 16 or 17. My outrage is limited. Not at the slapping, of course, but that is only mentioned as an aside.

Nice fact-twisting by the OCDA PR department. They certainly seem to be obsessed with all things s*e*x. I would prefer they look into cops dropping unarmed citizens in front of their children in San Clemente.

Putting 20-21yo men in positions of authority over or even authoritative proximity to teenage girls is a game of Russian-Roulette. I remember being in my early 20s living in Newport Beach, and teenage girls coming on to my friends and I was quite the temptation. Freedom Vs Common Sense - the age old question in America.
