Current New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez, the pride of Mission Viejo High School, has been called out by retired Jets QB Boomer Esiason as a "shaky chihuahua." Sanchez is famous for displaying Mexican pride on and off the field while guiding the Jets and USC before that. Chihuahuas were associated with Mexicans and Mexican-Americans long before Taco Bell's famous commercials. But Esiason later backtracked that he wasn't trying to make such a connection in calling Sanchez a rat dog.

First, here's what Esiason, a NFL commentator for CBS and Showtime's Inside the NFL, told  WEEI Sportsradio in Boston:

I'm sure that the Jets will be sniffing around. Because that's what the Jets do. They're trying to find their Tom Brady. They're trying to find their Aaron Rodgers. And I don't think in their mind they think that they feel like they've found the kid. If you watched Mark Sanchez the last month of the season, he was like a chihuahua standing on Madison Avenue and 36th Street entering the Midtown Tunnel, eyes bigger than you-know-what, and just so shaky.

Informed of the potential for outrage, Esiason later explained to ESPN . . .

I chose a small dog that always looks shaken and has big eyes, and doesn't like big things--a chihuahua. It's a skittish dog and he's been a skittish player.

He could have added that chihuahuas are often seen being cradled by bombshells, like Sanchez is with Victoria's Secret and Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition model Kate Upton.

Actually, Esiason is not the only one taking shots at Sanchez. After rookie quarterback Greg McElroy caught shit for saying certain Jets players are selfish, former defensive tackle Kris Jenkins defended the team's No. 3 QB on The Mike Lupica Show, saying:

The No. 1 quarterback should have said that a long time ago. It would have been all part of the process of him growing a pair and standing up and being a man. But the thing is, he lost his because he got caught up in the wash that is New York, the spotlight, taking pictures in the magazines and doing all that stuff. That's just what everybody has seen with Mark Sanchez, they got tired of it.

Guess such dings are to be expected when you're a third-year pro earning $50 million while leading a high-profile franchise to a disappointing 8-8 record.
