UPDATE, JAN. 16, 8:53 A.M.: The homeless man fatally stabbed behind an Anaheim Carl's Jr. Friday night has been identified by friends as 64-year-old John Berry. He's been described as a spiritual man who was so beloved by neighbors and patrons of businesses near where he was murdered at La Palma Avenue and Imperial Highway that a large memorial to him continues to grow there.

ORIGINAL POST, JAN. 14, 11:33 A.M.: Two people who had been at the busy restaurant chased John's presumed killer, and they were joined by a security guard and some of the more than 100 police officers who descended on the murder scene.

The man in a red hoodie tried to hop a fence near the Friendly Village Mobile Home Park, which is where the security guard pulled him down and held him about a quarter mile from the Carl's Jr. until officers caught up with him.

Within minutes, the suspect was surrounded by cops who sat him down on the La Palma Avenue curb. A police helicopter above shined a bright light on his expressionless face. He nonchalantly crossed his arms as if no big whoop.

Police make an arrest.
He was later identified at a hastily arranged press conference late last night as Itzcoatl Ocampo, 23, of Yorba Linda. He was booked on suspicion of murder and held in the Anaheim city jail without bail.

Ocampo's build and dark clothing, and the fatal stabbing of John, fits the description and m.o. of the killer who fatally stabbed James McGillivray Dec. 20 in nearby Placentia. Two other homeless men, Lloyd Middaugh and Paulus Cornelius Smit, were subsequently stabbed to death in Anaheim Hills and Yorba Linda.

One big difference between the previous slayings and last night's is there were a lot of people around the Carl's Jr. murder scene at the time. The other men were alone and isolated when they were done in. The task force probing the slayings has a press conference scheduled this afternoon that will hopefully fill in some of the blanks.

People who knew John described him as friendly.

"He was just like the kindest person ever," Chris Juarez told KABC 7 Eyewitness News. "A homeless man that never asked for anything, never begged. He stuck to his own thing. He was perfectly happy."

Another area resident, Jim Burke, told CBS2 that John eerily told him a couple days ago that the serial killer was following him Wednesday.

"John said that he kept the bike between him and this man as his line of defense and he got a good look at him," said Burke, who passed the information on to a nearby Department of Water and Power with instructions to contact police.

wow so many ignorant comments upon the fact that innocent people lost there life due to a coward.... there is no need for racist comments, you should dislike the individual not the race.... but on to another fact John lived his life like we all do but what made him different from a lot of us is that he cared about people even though he was not in the greatest of circumstances, so instead of animosity towards one another why don't we stand together with the hatred and end the negative output that our society portrays

There is a walk to honor John Berry at the Yorba Regional Park in Yorba Linda this Saturday. Rain or shine i beleive. The nearest crossstreets are Fairmont Blvd & La Palma. A memory book signing starts at 9 a.m. The actual walk commences at 10 a.m. Some of his actual family members will be present I hear. There should be a pretty big turn out...this will be the 3rd big memorial for John...also donations are being accepted for a proper and respectable funeral/burial for our dear friend John. GOD we all miss him, but we know he is with YOU and looking down on us with much love. I hope John continues to pray for us all as he did here. Such a kind, gentle, beautiful soul..I am sure he is enjoying the most breathtaking sunsets and sunrises in his peaceful eternal home in heaven. Love you good friend! I will see you again, God speed...

John Berry was such a special presence in our community and became well loved and respected. He was kind, caring, full of so much help and advice and was well spoken, very intelligent. Loved nature and astronomy....and if you pressured him enough he would take $$ but many many times he would use that money to buy someone else something. One lady gave him $20 and he bought another a bible w/ that $$. That is what kind of awe-inspiring christ-like man he was. Others met him just ONE time, and felt an instant connection and always looked for him and just felt good and safe seeing him in the area. So much can be said about how awesome he was. Its such a huge loss to us....

Johns death is sad for me because I remember seeing him around for sometime.I had contact with him a few times and he seemed to be a very nice and respectable man.I am sure the Lord has a special place for him in heaven.

John Berry was such a sweet man.  When I heard that the incident happened at Carl's Jr.'s, I immediately knew that John had gone to CVS beforehand.  I wish John had taken his friends up on their suggestion of staying with them for a month and he had not ventured out alone or at least until this was over with and they had captured Ocampo.

Meanwhile, a white man has been put in a coma by a suspected gang-banging Mexican in San Clemente (that's way south of Culver for you Weaklites). You can luck it up.

San fucking Clemente. I hope it's worth the cheap lawn care.

This is a little off topic but I would like to point out that in OC the cops hand out tickets to homeless people for "illegal camping". It's a $200+ ticket. It's nice to see Law Enforcement actively involved with the capture but it was definitely the caring residents of OC and their quick actions that led to the capture. Until the "illegal camping" law is revoked the homeless will continue to be victims of police on a nightly basis. I'm not saying all cops are bad but their are plenty of bad apples that intentionally look for homeless people to hand out camping tickets to. And of course this serial killer event happens shortly after 6 police used excessive force and literally beat a homeless man (Kelly Thomas ) to death.

People tend to blame Mexicans because they tend to do the most crimes. 1. They enter the United States illegally which is a crime and 2. More than 70% of prisoners in California are Mexicans.

These retuning Iraq and Afghan war veterans are turning out to be be dangerous. If you know one, keep your eyes on them, and be quick to call law enforcement for any reason you can find.

Mexican?  Read the name again.  I'm not sure myself, but isn't that Russian or something similar?

And you can thank everyone's favorite glutton Jerry Falwell and his buddies for inviting illegal Russians into the country.  Violent gangs and absolutely zero respect for anyone's lives bringing it over here.

the origin of the name Itzcoatl is Aztec. He's Aztec Mexican.

The name sounds very Mexican.  The first name sounds like that of an Incan or Mayan Indian...or an endangered Mexican salamander.

He was a cold blooded killer who deserves to die!!!  He was on in service for 3 months.  He preyed on those who could not defend themselves.  I hope they turn him into a woman in prison.  This has nothing to do with was.  He is a piece of shit that should die as soon as possible.  He killed my family for no reason.  He just liked the game......

Ocampo is a derranged, evil bastard. Not someone we should feel sorry for. No matter what may have happened while he was in Iraq, not in any form of combat BTW, he preyed on helpless vulnerable people to get his evil deeds in the newspaper. He deserves to sit in prison to be tormented and abused by other prisoners all the days of his life, or better yet to fry in the chair. He is an evil coward, too afraid to go after someone who can defend themself. His family also should return immediatly to Mexico if they think so bad of our country because their son is an evil monster. They created the evil monster, not America or our Military.

We need to keep an eye on all these returning Iraq and Afghan war vets. They are turning out to be violent criminal terrorist animals.

My husband is an Iraq/Afgan vet with 4 tours under his belt. He also has been deemed 100% disabled by his PTSD. I don't see him out killing a homeless vet. Everyone is accountable for themselves.

David
David

PTSD has different effects on different people 122. Not that I am saying this was caused  by PTSD. It's certainly a possibility. Meanwhile I will morn the man who used to pass through the parking lot of the hotel I worked at, most every day. Who would sometimes ask me to change his dollars into quarters and never once begged for a thing. A clean guy who had it totally together, as much as he could.

The Truth

Maybe your husband is out doing bad things, and you just don't know. We must be vigilant with these retuning Iraq and Afghan war "vets." Keep your eyes on him, as he is a potential psycho, and don't be afraid to call the police.

Hi Ashley, he could have developed schizophrenia, which be very definition means you do not have a choice. It means you are controlled by a total different personality inside your brain. Involuntarily.

Gee, you sound a little angry "deport."  What happened, did some Latinos go up in you?  Sure sounds like it to me...racist bitch.

MyNameIsTed

My guess is that Itzcoatl Ocampo is a legal American citizen and there's absolutely nothing that could have ever been done to prevent these tragedies.

mitch young
mitch young

He is probably legal, because contrary to what you hear, you cannot get into the military if you are illegal.

He is, however, an immigrant brought here at a young age. Absent our too loose immigration policy, these four white men would be alive.

Latinos commit more crime, including more violent crime than whites, but less than blacks. Asian commit the least amount of crime of all.

Whenever a person targets four people not of their ethnicity, some sort of racial motive should be suspected. In this case, there might also be 'issues' against the homeless. It's a hate crime in fact if not law. Yes the guy is crazy, but that crazy manifested itself in an anti-white, anti-homeless manner.

He's probably an illegal alien scumbag mexican!

Really "when they were done in"?!?! Did you go to school for journalism or are you related to the owner of the paper? Or is it your total disrespect for them because they were homeless.. it it would have been "upstanding" citizens would your choice of words still have been "done in". These men were murdered.

Yes, homeless people are generally messed up at least part of the time, and will have run ins with the cops. You still can't go out an kill them.
