Silent Protest Against Turkey's Armenian Genocide Denial Campaign to Happen Tomorrow at UC Irvine

Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for ergun-Sari-95.jpg
Earlier this week, the French Senate passed a resolution making it a crime in France to deny the Armenian genocide, a historical reality accepted by everyone except the Republic of Turkey and many of its citizens. As a result, many Turkish-American organizations in this country are already blasting the French government for kowtowing to what they claim is whiny Armenian propaganda, a vile stance if ever there was one. For instance, the Assembly of Turkish American Associations, headed by Coto de Caza resident Ergun Kirlikovali, just issued this press release that stated, in part, "Genocide is a criminal charge, which a legislature must defer to the judiciary and executive in foreign affairs"--and then accuses France of committing genocide against Algerians. Um, yeah...

Because of idiots like Kirlikovali, the Confederation of All-Armenian Students Associations will hold silent protests at campuses across California in protest of such denialists. "On the heels of the passage of legislation criminalizing Armenian Genocide denial in the French Senate, we demand that the government of the United States, like France, can stand up to empty political bullying from Turkey and properly condemn the Armenian Genocide," reads a press release. "The United States, following the French example, should continue the fight against genocide denial and reject Turkey's gag rule."

The local protest will happen at the flagpoles at UC Irvine, near Langson Library, and go from 9 in the morning until 4 in the afternoon. I do believe UCI has more Turkish than Armenian students, so it should be a blast. See you there!

OC Weekly should get rid of Gustavo Arellano. He is an one dimensional Armenian tool. He is crude, rude , and vile. He spreads hatred with every digit on his hands. Everytime he calls someone a moron or idiot, it shows his ignorance and how uneducated he is. He can not explain his stance without using such words, with not substance behind them. So who is calling the kettle black! OC Weekly get rid of Gustavo Arellano

Calling someone an "idiot" is beyond is insulting, wrong, and unprofessional. I am not sure whether the OCWeekly knows about this hate speech here or not, but it should definitely be removed, and Arellano must apologize.

I think Gustavo Arellano is crossing the limits of a civilized discourse by this piece. Differing opinions are no reason for calling people names in a public media source. I urge OC Weekly management to take a look at Arellano's behavior and remove this article full of personal attacks from OC Weekly pages.  It is disgusting to read.

Where are articles about the much worse genocide of Native Americans done right here, not in some faraway land.

I love Armenians.  They give me $20 to use their healthcare clinics and claim I have diabetes or bad back or some crap.

Last time I checked Turkish Americans were as much entitled to free speech and the First Amendment as everyone else.

This is America, where people have the right to express their point of view, unlike France where questioning the Armenian version of events of the First World War can land you in prison for a year and be fined $ 58,000.

Vive Le Free Speech !

the French Senate passed a resolution making it a crime in France to deny the Armenian genocide...I think the Frogs should pass a resolution making it a crime for their government to not defend their borders...

Why is the Champs Elysees lined with trees?  Because the Germans like to march in the shade!

Well, I note that his grasp of English is better than yours.  Maybe he's not the one that needs to worry about Migra knocking on their door.

How does libel about his residency status disprove the Armenian genocide? Note that the main perpetrator of the lie is the government, there are plenty of turks who would come out for the truth except they would be thrown in jail as traitors.

Classic ploy, no evidence to counter the claim so change the subject to personal attacks.  Lame in the extreme.

Disclaimer:As noted in other posts Gustavo doesn't need me to defend him, he does just fine himself. My main purpose for these posts is just to show that he is not alone.

I agree with you, Javid.Let me note that Armenians perpetrated the 20th-century's first genocide. Theykilled 2.5m unarmed Turkish, Kurdish and Azeri civilians in the occupiedterritories of the Ottoman Empire as well as in the Caucasus.Turks retaliated by resettling the Armenian population to Syria.Armenians themselves are responsible for their own tragedy. Turks did not doanything to Armenians that Armenians did not do to the Turks. They justresponded with the same what Armenians did, and they had every moral andhistorical right for the response and retaliation. I admire them. Thank you,Talaat Pasha!

Armenia must stop its denialist policy. Yerevan must recognizeTurkish genocide cowardly perpetrated by Armenians behind Russian army's back.

There is no doubt there was 'ethnic cleansing' by whites of Indians. Then again, the Indians did a pretty good job of their own ethnic cleansing, both against other Indians and against whites: like it says in the Declaration of Independence "... the merciless Indian Savages, whose known rule of warfare, is an undistinguished destruction of all ages, sexes and conditions."

Absolutely! This country allows Ottomans to show themselves to be the ahistorical morons they are—have at it, son!

There you go again, calling people names. Your ignorance is showing. You can not even express how your dribblings, which you call journalism, are newsworthy. You are juvenile and need to mature.

Monica below is a frequent commenter  On the Jerusalem post... 362 posts to be exact.   I did a little poking around and haven't found any comments yet but she better hope she played nice in the sandbox lest she get exposed as an Anti Semite.

There was a price put on the killing of Indians but it was more of a double standard... We (Pale face) can kill you and take your land... But if you (Red face) touches one of our people, WELL, then we have a problem.

In all seriousness -- do you really think it should be a *crime* to deny a historical event?

And what of the White American genocide against Natives laughingly called "Manifest Destiny" ??

Yet water and mineral rights are still an issue for some SW nations as well as mainstream America's dismissal of Indian grievances.  Maybe whites should stop bitching about "illegal" immigration. LOL

That makes no sense, congratulations.

If you don't start listening to what other people have to say you're going to make no progress. If you had actually read and thought about my posts you would understand than I'm no apologist for the Turkish government's stance on Armenia and I do have clue about the history of this country.

Seriously man, you need to get a grip.

So you believe that the Turkish policy of considering any comment documenting the slaiughtering of Aremenians as treason and the lack official U. S. government acknowledgment of the policy of extermination of the native groups in North American to be equivalent. No where even in the same ballpark.

I aint gonna say SHIT about the Armenians.  I made a joke once and was called Armenian Genocide Denier for almost a year! As far as the Turks go I have a couple of issues.. 1 they want to be a part of the EU and 2 the cant settle on the name for their capital city of Constantinople... Other than that they wear the Fez which is pretty cool!

Dude

they did the right thing becasue Armenians were first to start killing Turks. Every crime should be punished. Turks punished Armenian perpetrators of Turkish genocide.

FishWithoutBicycle

But the point is, with or without a governing body "officially" recognizing that genocide did occur, it DID happen. I'm disgusted my government won't acknowledge the terrible events of the Armenian genocide for the sake of diplomacy with the Turkish government. It's almost too despicable to think about.

Thanks for clarifying.

There is a very distinct difference...  We killed injuns because we wanted their land.  The Ottomans killed Armenians simply because they were Armenians.

Unlike the Turks there is no state policy of denial. The fact is well documented and is accepted as historical fact.
