California Dream Act Repeal: EPIC FAIL!

Supporters of a state initiative to repeal the California Dream Act Governor Jerry Brown signed into law last year announced today they failed to obtain the 500,000 signatures required to get a proposition on the ballot. The California Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors Act is a package of state laws authored by state Sen. Gil Cedillo (D-Los Angeles) that allow children who were brought into the U.S. under the age of 16 without proper visas/immigration documentation, and who have attended school on a regular basis and otherwise meet in-state tuition and GPA requirements, to apply for public and private student financial aid benefits. Unlike the national Dream Act that died in the U.S. Senate last year, California's version does not provide a path to citizenship.

Assemblyman Tim Donnelly (R-San Bernardino), the state Assembly's only teabagger, revealed this morning the campaign to nuke California's Dream Act was only able to get 447,514 signatures to submit to the secretary of state by today's deadline. Many more than half a million Juan Hancocks would have been needed as thousands would have no-doubt been deemed invalid.

You may also know Donnelly from the police blotter. The legislator was detained Wednesday for trying to board a plane with a loaded handgun in his briefcase.

SS numbers are given the Social Security Administration, and only individuals contribute to SS. And do everyone a favor and go back to school to learn some English. Matt, does the headline "EPIC FAIL" refer to the grades that most Mexicans receive from their teachers? Or to the success of these dreamers of becoming citizens? The fact is there isn't a pathway for these illegal aliens to become citizens.

Sure, as the state's test scores approach Mississippi levels, Trestles gets dug up to put in yet another toll road, the 5 and the 15 are jammed for 5 hours a day, UC and Cal State tuitions go through the roof, and the governor is throwing a tantrum threatening 'huge' cuts to what passes for education in the state if we don't drastically increase taxes. Stop demanding and consuming the goods and services produced by illegal aliens and/or increase the number of immigration visas for the workers that come/stay here illegally to produce the goods and services that we demand and consume. Doing either or both would be much cheaper and would avoid the massive intrusive collection of personal data now included in the most recent version of HR 2885, The bill needlessly expands government control over businesses and individuals at all levels of the economy.
