Buena Park holds a sobriety checkpoint tonight, while roving patrol for drunken drivers will be conducted in Laguna Woods, Laguna Hills, Laguna Niguel and Aliso Viejo.

The checkpoint runs from 7 p.m. through 2 a.m. Saturday in the 8000 block of La Palma Avenue.

All drivers passing through will be checked for signs of driving while impaired, while some will be targeted for possibly driving without a license.

The Buena Park Police Department claims crashes involving alcohol drop by an average of 20 percent when well-publicized checkpoints are conducted often enough.

The South County enforcement is part of the Orange County Sheriff's Department (OCSD) "Avoid the 12" DUI Task Force operations. Streets that have a high incidence of DUI-related arrests and collisions are being targeted. The agency says the goal is to reduce DUI-related collisions, injuries and deaths.

Funding for the Buena Park and OCSD programs are provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
