More Than 60 Percent of Undocumented Adults Have Been in U.S. Over 10 Years: Study

Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for ask_a_mexican_logo.jpg
Nearly two-thirds of the 10.2 million unauthorized adult immigrants in the U.S. have lived in this country for at least 10 years and nearly half--4.7 million--are parents of minor children, according to a new Pew Hispanic Center study. "Unauthorized Immigrants: Length of Residency, Patterns of Parenthood" is based on data from the U.S. Census Bureau's March 2010 Current Population Survey and Pew's analysis of the demographic characteristics of the unauthorized immigrant population.

2011-patterns-of-parenthood_pew-hispanic-center.jpg
Pew Hispanic Center

The analysis found that 35 percent of unauthorized adult immigrants have resided in the U.S. for 15 years or more; 28 percent for 10 to 14 years; 22 percent for 5 to 9 years; and 15 percent for less than five years.

The share that has been in the country at least 15 years has more than doubled since 2000, when about 16 percent of the unauthorized adult immigrants had lived here for that duration, according to Pew. Meanwhile, the share of unauthorized adult immigrants who have lived in the country for less than five years has fallen by half over the same period (from 32 percent in 2000 to 15 percent in 2010).

Number crunchers deduced from the data that the sharpest growth for unauthorized immigrants in the U.S. came during the late 1990s and early 2000s, and that the inflow has obviously slowed down significantly in recent years. The U.S. economy sputtering and border enforcement tightening are credited with causing that.

According to Pew Hispanic Center's online description of the study, the characteristics of the undocumented population "have become a source of renewed interest in the wake of former House Speaker Newt Gingrich's recent endorsement of a proposal to create a path for unauthorized immigrants to gain legal status if they have lived in the country for a long period of time, have children in the U.S., pay taxes and belong to a church."

Of course, that's blasphemy to several of Gingrich's opponents for the GOP presidential nomination.

Controversial subject of illegal immigration and the Iowa Debate

Birthright citizens, and naturalized citizens have the ability to vote tochange America forever, but we must scrutinize voting registrations for the2012 election cycle for a President. Over and over again Democrats with Liberalties have been caught numerous times, using such radical groups such as Acornto steal political races with illegal alien registrations. Voter fraud is hereto stay, unless the federal government makes it impossible to defraud citizenvoters of their inherent rights, by demanding the use of a National ID cardthat could be used for many other purposes. The old Social Security number hasbeen badly compromised, as we have seen with a yearly tally of hundreds of thousandsof Americans fighting to save their credit, as its been procured by foreignnationals to steal jobs, as well as peoples good credit, then using it fornefarious purposes.

The Department of Justice, Eric Holder has showed his noticeablemark by mirroring the NAACP that having to show official picture ID is racist.Holder has shown his true colors as a far left progressive, by propelling his judgmentagainst the right of sovereign states to identify registered voters withgovernment documents like an ID card, and his now relentless pursuit againstArizona, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, Utah and in probability NorthCarolina for adopting policing laws within their borders against illegal aliens.  ITHINK MOST PATRIOTIC AMERICANS WAOULD LIKE TO SEE ERIC HOLDER IMPEACHED, forhis unnecessary impact of suing states, trying to stop illegal aliens squattingthere and the ‘Gun Walking’ storm.  Ifholder joins the jobless lines, maybe he would have a better understanding ofAmericans looking for work, while company owners are still employing foreignerswho should not even be here? Soon—these unconcerned businesses will be in thespotlight, when ICE raids uncover the scheming in unlawful employment and haveto face harsh sanctions if caught. Not excluded is the irrational “witch Hunt”against steely Maricopa Sheriff Joe Arpaio, that the Obama administration has usingintimidation along with radical open border organizations.

In the Iowa nationally televised debate yesterday evening Idid not see Rep. Michele Bachmann brought into the discussion on illegalimmigration? Was it by chance I missed it, while digging in the refrigeratorfor Soy milk or was the TEA PARTY chairperson deliberately left out of thismost controversial issue, that is vastly becoming manifest amongst the tens ofmillions of physical Conservatives? Newt Gingrich had his say relating to the20 million illegal migrant and immigrant population already residing here andthat it was unreasonable to deport foreign nationals who havelived in America for 25 years. Gingrich also added that the administrationshould get off the back of States that are being persecuted for their standagainst illegal immigration; included he said that the fence would be completedbetween US-Mexico by 2014 (Is that the real 2006 Secure Double layer borderfence) and that Sanctuary Cities (State such as California, Nevada, Coloradoand New York) would be punished with loss of federal funds.

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who has beenGingrich’s main political principal rival partner in recent debates, defendedthe U.S. Immigration and citizenship Services E-Verify program proposing identificationcards for all "non-resident aliens" working here. Texas Gov. ThenRick Perry  who was attacked by verbalflak last September for defending in-state university tuition to illegalimmigrants, who were either smuggled into the US, as the unborn or who werebrought into the country as children and attend public schools in Texas. Romneyconcluded on this heated subject, "I've sent Texas Ranger reconteams there. Our law enforcement men and women face fire from across theborder, or in the U.S. side, from the drug cartels," Perry said. "Itis not safe there.”

Both Gingrich, Romney has forgotten one important factor; thatthese words are the initiative that will draw even more illegal aliens if wedon’t enforce our laws; finding a way to get to public welfare and entitlementAmerica? As I have already mentioned, unless I was absent from the TV set atthe time, that Michele Bachmann was left out of this part of the commentary. Asthe Major TEA PARTY leader her resume has proven her worth to stifle spendingin Massachusetts, as well been an arbiter of reducing the $15 Trillion treasurydeficit and has a commanding vote in opposition to superfluous issues in the Houseof Representatives. She is a strong opponent of the archaic tax code, whichmust be replaced with fair taxation for all; without any exemptions, subsidiesfor the wealth corporations and industries of special interests lobbyists.

Rep. Dan Boren (D-Ok)is the third Democrat cosponsoring Chairman Lamar Smith's Legal Workforce Act(H.R.2885.) Originally Smith required100 co-sponsors to pass the bill. The numbers have currently grown, 72, so as aresult all we need to get this extremely important bill to the House chambersis just 28.   The bill would require 100% of businesses tobegin using E-Verify for all new hires within 2 years and require all federal, state, and local governments to check new hires and existing employees within 6months. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has launched Records and Information fromDMVs for E-Verify (RIDE),a new aspect which allows USCIS’s E-Verify plan to approve the validness ofMississippi driver’s licenses used by employees as Form I-9 identity documents.RIDE mirrors a obligation to continuallyimproving E-Verify,” said USCIS Director Alejandro Mayorkas. “Thisimportant enhancement strengthens E-Verity’s anti-fraud capabilities and will introducea key role in helping employers in the United States to maintain a legalworkforce.”

Make yourself known by contacting Washington at202-224-3121, or you can read about this indignation at NumbersUSA website ofthe $113 billion dollars spend yearly on illegal immigration. America doeswelcome—LEGAL IMMIGRANTS—and always have. The 50 states also welcome highlyskilled workers who are educated in the Sciences, Engineering and technology. These Immigrants will never end up in the welfare lines. This country mustinhibit the poverty from other countries, as we cannot even look after our ownpeople who need a leg-up? We just cannot afford to pay anymore for illegalaliens—ILLEGAL ALIENS, ILLEGAL MIGRANTS OR ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS. The country isbroke and our own population must come first.

The bill is a concrete proposal and has a lot ofsupport in the U.S. House, with 80 co-sponsors. It is one of the "fivegreat immigration solutions" many politicians are standing for this year. THEGENUINE 2006 SECURE FENCE ACT;  double 15foot high fence, for fast track lanes in between for the US Border Patrol to use.  However, they need a lot more momentum towin. Rep. King's bill, H.R. 140, that would require Congress to elucidate themeaning of the 14th Amendment and thereby ending  the practice ofautomatically granting U.S. citizenship to all U.S.-born children of illegalaliens. We don't need a Constitutionalamendment. Without an amendment the US taxpayers are the recipients of the law, which allows an estimated 340.000 babies to become instant citizens annuallyadding to the growing deficit, to support these children and the Mother. Thisis the most expensive entitlement law attributed to illegal immigrationoccupation.

Other than Rep. Steve King's (R-IA) Birthright Citizenship Actof 2011, that would stop the misinterpreted practice of instant citizenship tochildren of illegal alien parents, the Mandatory E-Verify will end incurablebusiness owners from hiring cheap foreign labor, instead of the 22 millionAmerican workers looking for a ‘Help needed” Sign. Nowthere's more proof that Americans want to abolish automatic citizenship for thechildren of illegal aliens. .A new Rasmussen poll shows that 65% of likely U.S. voters oppose birthrightcitizenship.

Hey, I'm one of them. I'm currently going to college in Texas. Studying for a MS in Accounting from Texas A&M University. Currently running a business part time which earns me a whooping 20k per year (Yes I pay taxes on those) . I'm planning on starting my second business soon. The misconception that illegal immigrants aren't productive is totally false and I am proof of that. I support the overhaul of the system to guarantee that students like me stay and criminals are kicked out. I came as a kid and never knew of my illegal status until I applied for a Drivers License, fortunately there's a law in Texas that allows me to attend to college with financial aid coming from Texan taxpayers (Illegal immigrants from texas also pay these taxes since they are property taxes). We are good people, seriously, stop being afraid of us. I gave jobs to 3 legal citizens this year.

So they can't make it in good ol Mexico and come here and actually bash this country. They can go straight to hell on a one way ticket.I have heard some say how they actually hate this country.I was born here and love it!

New study indicates 100% of illegal aliens eligible for deportation.  Additional study links mass importation of poverty to erosion of real wages, decay of public infrastructure (ie hospitals and schools) and higher unemployment rate.

But the saddest part of all is our dysfunctional gov't whom on one side wants the illegals to stay for the cheap labor (i.e. Republicans) and on the other side wants to grant amnesty to anyone that survives the athletic competition of running through the desert (i.e. Democrats).

It's funny who this Pew study is getting a big play in the media (mainstream and 'alternative'), whereas the Pew study showing that "Latino" children are now the most numerous poor children, and that of those two thirds were children of immigrants (leading to the obvious conclusion that we open-borders means poverty) , was met with silence.

AND they all want citizenship. I'll bet none of them have learned English, probably all drive illegally, no license and no insurance. In my four yrs. living in Santa Ana aka "Little Mexico," I've been rear-ended on four different occasions. None of the drivers had a drivers license, or insurance, but they all had a cousin who could do the repair work, no thanks. So when politicians want to give them a break aka Scream Act, Amnesty, aren't they aiding and abetting these career criminals? Just a thought.

So, what this study is saying is that the majority of these illegal aliens are career criminals. No surprise.

You make a good point. And while I don't believe in automatically granting citizenship to every person who crosses the border, I think it's despicable to exploit people for their cheap labor and not even grant them a chance to become citizens. You can't have it both ways.

gustavoarellano

Yeah, and the Lower East Side was a wealthy enclave of Eastern and Southern Europeans just after those wops LEGALLY came into this country. Your expectation that recent immigrants should immediately transition into the middle-class is laughable, ahistorical, and typical of your inanities. Funny!

and white people drive illegally everyday after their 14th DUI in a month what is your point?

Yes they are career criminals just for being here trying to get a beter life like your great grandfathers did not long ego...making you feel your better

Thus the bigotry emerges.  Those who disagree with mass uncontrolled immigration are denigrated as "psycho right wing idiots".  Thanks for proving that bigots come from all cultures.

I agree, which is why I clean my own toilet. At the same time, I don't get a tax break for that, and if I put an ad out asking for, say, handiman work but only Americans could apply, I would run afoul of the discrimination police.

Actually you, in your bumbling way, are making the case for an immigration cut off -- like that which ended the Ellis-Island era. As you note, wasn't as great as the rose-colored 'memories' of its descendants would have it, and the 1924 immigration law was a big part in increasing wages and 'assimilation'.

BTW, there has been research over generations of Mexican Americans, and they stop progressing after the second generation. http://www.chicano.ucla.edu/ce...

Your arguments fall flat.  Mass importation of poverty has dire consequences.  Combine that with a victimization mentality, sky high out of wedlock and teenage birthrates, low education and you have very bad situation.  Even the jornaleros will tell you that too many are chasing to few jobs.

try going illlegal into some of the countries they come from without papers and see how many years in the slammer you get - So ya ILLEGALS, like it or not the law is the law. otherwise I shouldn't get a speeding ticket if I am driving fast to work - I am just in a hurry to better my life.

But in your case, it's absolutely true--so stop whining!

Actually, you cannot legally discriminate on the basis of 'national origin' (although, of course, immigrant crew leaders do all the time), except in some specialized occupations (national security related, for example). Moreover, you cannot even ask for documentation other than the minimal and easily forged/falsely obtained requirements of the 1986 Immigration Reform and Control Act (IRCA). The Obama/Holder/Perez recently went after an Arizona community college district for requiring the immigrant employment candidates present their visa/greencard. Of course La Raza/MALDEF and the 'A' CLU were instigating the case.

The upshot is that even if I took a private initiative to reduce demand for immigrant/illegal immigrant labor, I would theoretically be in violation of so-called 'equal opportunity' laws.

FishWithoutBicycle
FishWithoutBicycle

I personally don't think asking for proof of eligibility to work in this country is discrimination...considering there are supposed to be harsh penalties for employers who hire undocumented workers.

Alva, are you aware of US history?

'Being' here illegally is a civic violation -- illegal entry, even the first time, is a criminal misdemeanor. BTW illegal entry includes not only the classic hiking across the border, but also lying to immigration on entry. So if you enter on a visa fully intending to stay, you are an illegal entrant.

PTCGAZ
PTCGAZ

that is wrong. The real reality is being here "illegally" is a civic violation much like the speeding ticket mentioned above. Therefore in federal court it is likely they would face a fine or deportation if they are actually convicted of the civil crime of being here illegally.

BettaRayBill
BettaRayBill

Actuallyis a Federal Felony, Bitch! I mean Mitch, not a criminal misdemeanor. And youare paying federal taxes so the government can give it to the banks to “boost”the economy. If people lie in a I-9 and the government does not prosecute is becauseat the end of the year they don’t get whatever money is paid throughout the yearand is not given back as a tax refund.

mitch young
mitch young

If the government isn't going to enforce the borders, or ignore those who violate the borders, what I am paying federal taxes for?

And by the way, entering the country illegally is a criminal misdemeanor, signing an I-9 when you are not authorized to work is federal perjury. You don't think they put folks in jail for perjury -- ask Martha Stewart.

gustavoarellano
gustavoarellano

Always LOVE how specious Know Nothings make their comparisons between entering this country illegal and other, actual crimes! Speeding ticket? First time I heard that one--you should've stuck with the one about illegals entering your home and demanding free rent haha.
