Barbara Coe Ridicules Suicide of Undocumented High School Student Despondent Over His Legal Status

Barbara Coe is, if nothing else, at least true to the false friend of her name: barbaric. We have written many blog posts over the years tracking her vicious words, whether wishing death on President Barack Obama, ridiculing gays and Mexis (and gay Mexis!) and many, many more.

Yet the head witch of the California Coalition for Immigration Reform outdid herself this week with her treatment of the suicide of Joaquin Luna.

Good people in this country were shocked that Luna--an 18-year-old high school student from Texas--committed suicide recently andd left behind a note stating the reason: because he faced next-to-no future as an undocumented youth in country that refuses to accept such Americans as, well, Americans.

For Coe, however, it was just another "sicko yellow-belly coward illegal alien 'sob story,'" as she put it in a Tuesday email to her minions. "We wonder how law-abiding American citizen kids feel when they are denied ANY taxpayer funds for their college education while illegal alien lawbreakers are awarded their American parents' tax dollars??? [Gustavo note: as usual, all italics, CAPS, space errors, underlined words and other grammatical Easter eggs in the original] This is just another PR stunt promoting an Illegal Alien AMNESTY...if this illegal alien kid was so mentally deranged he could not not live without American taxpayer 'freebees', so be it."

Not an ounce of sympathy! All the anxiety of getting caught could be avoided by choosing to enter the US legally like millions of immigrants have done for years. It is a choice. No one is forced to cross the border illegally. Just stand at the border crossings and you see the thousands of people who cross LEGALLY every day. It is obvious that most people are willing and capable of doing it. The ones that don't choose to do it legally is because they do not respect the law and do not respect the US. You're simply never going to secure the border. It is too long, too remote, and we'd spend ourselves down yet another hole trying to do it. Undocumented people HERE are beaten, killed, imprisoned and hated by legal citizens. Where do you see that undocumented immigrants get to go to college for free? Plenty of citizens and legal immigrants also go to college for free. That's what happens with a need-based scholarship system. THIS ^ I didn't buy into the hype that immigrants were taking American jobs either, like most of you ignorantly seem to believe. Except then it happened to me, and then I knew it was indeed true. It was a job as an insurance agent, not some lowly job that "white people aren't willing to take" like someone else mentioned. I was actually hired, then got a call from the car insurance company owner saying I had lost the position to someone else, even though, "I'm sorry, you were the better candidate and I regretfully have to say I can't bring you on board." This happened literally TWO days before I was supposed to start. So naturally, I was livid, and went to the insurance company in person, to demand a better explanation. Keeping in mind that he clearly stated my qualifications were better than heres... here, have a look at the lovely reasons I was given: 1. Because the other candidate "needed the money more than you do." First of all, he doesn't know that for sure; that's the most ridiculous reason I've ever heard. I also have bills to pay and school tuition to pay for. But wait, it gets better...2. Because she offered to work for much less than what the job - not even just a job, but an actual CAREER - was paying, he was willing do the "extra training with her". 3. Because she was bilingual and I was not.And the kicker... reason number 4, which felt like a punch in the gut...4. Upon hearing she didn't get the job, she started crying and he "felt bad". Her sob story? That her non-citizen status was preventing her from getting government benefits to support her kids and rent. Yes, you heard that right. She couldn't get aide from the American government to support her children, because she didn't want to bring attention to the fact that she was here illegally... and so she offered to work for him under the table for less than what the position was paying. I was actually hired, mind you. I had filled out the paperwork and everything, was prepared to start the following Monday... and then fired before I even started. All because an illegal immigrant gave someone a sob story about how she was having a hard time taking care of her kids and paying her rent, because couldn't get her government freebies. When I threatened to report him to the Dept. of Labor for all of this, I mean, this was meant to be my career while I pursued my degree... he panicked and actually had the audacity to offer to PAY ME OFF to not say anything to anyone. I didn't take the offer - instead I told him that I was still looking for jobs, that I was going to put on my resume that I had worked there for a year instead of the two days I had actually "worked" there, and that he had better give me a damn good reference if any potential employers called him. He wanted me to give the cover story that I lost the job because I wasn't bilingual. However, cover story or not, it looks bad to potential employers if you're fired before you even start. I did NOT agree to this in order to save his butt, and I sure as heck didn't do it to save hers. The ONLY reason I agreed with it is because the health and safety of children was involved. It might have been slightly immoral, albeit less than if I'd let him actually pay me off (which would be illegal AND immoral)... but honestly? I just didn't have the heart to be the reason for two children potentially getting deported, if not having to suffer. Innocent kids, who had nothing to do with what went down. None of what happened was their fault, and I couldn't bring myself to get them caught in the crossfire of what would happen if I alerted a government agency to the situation.So yes, people, this kind of crap does happen. First hand experience here of an immigrant taking American citizens' jobs. True fact, it DOES happen. And it happens to legitimate jobs, in legitimate careers.... it doesn't just happen with jobs that "white people aren't willing to do." Having been a victim of this myself, I can easily see where this Barbara woman is coming from, and where a lot of people posting on this forum are coming from. Either way, ever since then, I've held a grudge and a newly-found negative view of both that insurance company as well as illegal immigrants. And rightly so, too. No one I've told about his has said I wasn't justified in feeling that way and reacting the way I did. Since then, I'm all for getting the illegals out of this country - and not just Mexicans.

No matter what the circumstances there is always a better way. With that said, he was not an American. If he was not born here or Naturalized then he was not an American. No matter how much you want to ignore that FACT it does not change anything or make black into white. Just because I call myself a Canadian does not make it so if I am not really a Canadian citizen. Start to deal in the realm of reality and maybe we will start to take you seriously.
Why is it that, with your side, any comment that you do not agree with is considered racist? Are you really that weak minded? Even though it appears that the comments about Luna's apparent motivation were(are) in error (all we have are verbal statements, no reason to believe they're wrong), that doesn't change the fact that Coe revealed herself to be a hateful bigot by her statement.

My point is that it's easier to get legal residency in Mexico (or Canada, for that matter) than in the United States. I think I probably have more experience of the Mexican border authorities than you do, but I'm not willing to say that absolutely. As for the Pew Hispanic Center's numbers, those are based on an estimate from UCI professor Frank Bean. It says in all the documents that quote it that his methodology was intended to be imprecise and to provide an order of magnitude rather than a number. But even if the number is accurate, it's not enough to tie it to increased enforcement—remember that the economy here sucks, and small business are the most likely to close, which disproportionately affects the undocumented. Yes, they've left Alabama and Arizona, but that doesn't mean they've gone home. And you keep making these noises about a national effort that don't make sense. Even if you could deport someone for $100, which is unrealistic given the machinations of large government, you'd spend $1.2B doing so. That's a hard sell to the suddenly budget-conscious American people, especially given that there's zero chance it will work. Given that it's probably more like $1,000 a person by the time you load the cost with all the documentation, all the behind-the-scenes stuff, there's no way Americans are going to pony up $12 billion. A college education is not necessary to survive in the US, you are correct, but people who have a college degree have much better prospects socioeconomically. Without intending to cause offense to our fearless leader, his parents did whatever was necessary to survive; their son is now the editor of a newspaper with a not-insignificant circulation, he's not odd-jobbing or packing oranges in Anaheim. I fail to see what the high drop-out rate (source, incidentally?) of Latino-studies majors has to do with the DREAM Act. What about DREAM Act students who major in pre-med? Pre-law? Chemistry? Sociology? If you're insinuating that it's not worth it to encourage DREAM Act students because they're just going to drop out, you're being a bit hysterical. As for high educational standards, the educational standards in question are to be admitted to a school, which theoretically is selective all by itself without reference to the immigration status of the students selected for admission, and to stay there without flunking out. There is a direct correlation between the educational level of a neighborhood and the crime. You can go and research the Census data yourself, adjusting as necessary for the other direct correlation of population density. E-Verify? Maybe it'll be implemented on a large scale, maybe not. Tightened border security? Good luck. It's a big border with a lot of people who are desperate to cross it, and it's a potential money pit—you'll never fully secure it. It is not possible; there's not enough money in the government to do it without gutting pretty much everything else the government does. And a rounding-up effort? A pipe dream, but go on dreaming it if it gives you hope.

She said he never mentioned the Dream Act or showed signs that he didn’t believe he would be able to attend college or have a career. "The signs that he exhibited were 'I'm determined to make it'" said Garza. Garza showed us his college essay and even an email sent by Joaquin earlier this month indicating his plans to send the essay to different universities in hopes of getting scholarships. The school counselor told us he was still in the process of sending those essays. Staff and students remain baffled as to why he would take his life. They said he had shown motivation and determination to go to college and become an engineer no matter what.

Local evening TV news is more about promotion of their talking heads than actual issues, national outlets not much better. There are plenty of illegal Chinese in San Franisco, etc. As for the 'Mexican Job' thing, well, I think that just has become a fact in most of SoCal. But even here I have seen white folks (who are likely not immigrants) doing 'Mexican' jobs. Example, where I live the 'community' actually hold a volunteer carwash to support a regiment at Pendleton. White folks washing cars for no pay at all. I used to live in Ocean Beach San Diego, and I know of at least three white gardeners who worked there (although two were actually a couple who worked together, the other guy specialized in 'quiet' gardening, so probably was able to charge a premium.). The other day I was talking to an accountant for one of these habitat restoration companies and I asked him about jobs -- he said 'we hire mostly Mexican guys'. Well, isn't that the sort of job that a hippy dippy young environmentalist kid would like to have for a while? Maybe work that a couple of years then on to college?

We also know that some illegals have left Arizona and Alabama in response to those state's laws , though generally they left for other states rather than 'Mexico Lindo'. But with a national effort, that wouldn't be possible. "Crime" You are the one being unrealistic. A college education is necessary to survive in the US. It isn't. Further, the kinds of people who commit major crimes are, in general, not the sort to pursue higher ed seriously, and the kinds of people who pursue higher ed are not the sort who will go on crime sprees if they don't get to go to college. And given the high drop out rate of 'Latino' studies, it is unlikely that even a majority of illegal alien students would qualify for a 'Dream Act' which had high educational standards. As I understand it, in fact, all they have to do under the proposed legislation is show they are 'pursuing' a degree for two years -- two years at the local Community College ? Great (and I say that as a someone who transferred from a CC). And yes, I do suggest "doing nothing" is better than giving yet another amnesty. If we were to make yet more progress on border security, implement e-verify and make more efforts in the 'rounding up' department, I might be open to a Dream Act sort of deal. However, I would reduce other Mexican (or whereever) immigration by the exact amount of people 'Dream Act'-ed from that country. Of course the ethnic/racial activists (like the editor of this publication) who are big part of this 'movement' wouldn't go for that, as the whole act is really just about increasing their numbers and power in this country.
Last year fifteen percent of legal immigrants came from Mexico. That's 150,000 people. Not all had *immediate* relatives in the US. So they had to wait for ten years -- some professions (doctor, college professor, lawyer) take that long in either training/education or crappy, high pressure work until you really 'make it'. And most US adults certainly do live apart from their parents.

That's the point...they're going to be here unless we stop demanding and consuming the goods and services produced by illegal aliens and/or increase the number of immigration visas for the workers that come/stay here illegally to produce the goods and services that we demand and consume.
Illegals are not taking away the jobs of Americans, they doing the jobs that most Americans are unwilling to do. The good jobs for educated Americans are all being shipped to places like India, China and Malaysia AND MEXICO. I spent my last 5 years at HP doing nothing but moving 70% of my US employee's jobs out of the country to take advantage of the cheap labor force elsewhere, including to Mexico (Guadalajara). I quit and opened my own business when I realized how devastating this practice is for our own citizens. And for all of this "savings", our CIO "earned" an $11M bonus for himself. And I would bet the staff who care for his kids, yard, and house are probably not paid a living wage. See the big picture.

There is no such line. FWIW, the "line" for those fortunate enough to have an immediate relative living here is only 10 - 20 years long and, of course, most humans typically live apart from their parents or spouses for 10 to 20 years - not.

Take a walk into your nearest In-n-Out, you'll see actual Americans (reflecting the neighborhood) working a 'dirty job'. There are even Asians working at the one by UCI! My favorite is about 15 miles from the border, on Sports Arena BLVD in San Diego -- it's all Navy spouses and sailors moonlighting, judging from the fair skin and southern/midwest accents.
There is no indication that 'integration' will bring us any benefits as a country. Zero, zilch. In fact, they will likely be even more of a burden, tax wise. We did amnesty once, it was a failure, as the quadruple amount of illegal aliens -- and the broken state of California -- shows. Remember Einstein's definition of insanity.

Dave, not defending this particular outburst (I don't even subscribe to Coe's whatever it is). But I think what your letter is missing is the concept of citizenship. You see, you are under the rules a citizen of the US. You, and I, are lucky to be such -- though I think the value of citizenship is being eroded all the time. At any rate there is a social contract, we help our fellow citizens out. We are not under obligation to help non-citizens in the same way. Maybe that is wrong, maybe we should all be citizens of the world, but that isn't reality. Take Mexico -- foreigners cannot even buy land within 100 km of the border and 60 miles of the coast. Mexico certainly doesn't foot the bill for non-legal immigrant aliens within its borders, even for elementary school, let alone higher education. If you want open borders, why not lobby for that? After all, why should Mexicans get all the fun just 'cuz' they happen to be adjacent to the US? Why not make it 'you land, you are in unless we can find a reason to deny you?' Either laws mean something -- and their are plenty of reasons for immgration laws, which I won't argue here -- or they don't. Why not be honest?

I was perusing the want aids the other day and many of the line cook ads required bilingual English-Spanish. And of course those are the positions that are actually advertised, I suspect many are just handed to someone's primo. Further, some of those jobs shouldn't be jobs at all -- the social costs of lawn guys far outweigh their value to society. Wash your own car, etc. And Dave, once again -- we stopped the McConnells and assorted D'Alessandro's for most of the 20th century. And yet we put a man on the moon, had the baby boom, etc.
Jeff, we tried that once -- we know have four times as many illegal aliens as in 1986. Let's grant that many will never be deported -- although recent right here indicate that deportation is indeed an ongoing threat. There are other alternatives. One is to gradually institute real enforcement of employment laws. Some proportion of people, even those here long term, will head back. This happened in Europe with Italians, Spaniards, and Yugoslavs that had been in Germany for decades. But even those who don't leave voluntarily, there is no reason to do anything *for* them, and no upside to legalization. It isn't like they are going to suddenly start earning a lot more -- and realistically most 30 year old Mexican illegal immigrants aren't going to be getting a lot more skills or education. What they will get is the opportunity to claim the Earned Income Tax Credit, so legalization would probably be a net tax loser.
