A short documentary about homophobia, bullying and school violence screens tonight in Huntington Beach.

Admission is $5 to Teach Your Children Well at 7 p.m. in Huntington Beach Central Library, with proceeds going to the Huntington Beach Human Relations Task Force.

The 36-minute film, which is narrated by Emmy-winning comedienne Lily Tomlin, explores the tragic events that have occurred as a result of homophobia, bullying and school violence directed toward LGBT young people. Parents, teachers, students and professionals from various gay and lesbian service organizations are among those interviewed on camera. The most touching moments are delivered by the mother of one young victim of hatred.

Besides the task force, sponsors of tonight's screening include Huntington Beach's openly gay City Councilman Joe Shaw, Huntington Beach Union School District Board member Bonnie Castrey and the Orange County Equality Coalition.

Mitch,I think jmacho and Bill T. bring up some excellent points. And you must also understand that I (as a woman) bristle at any kind of assertion that victims of unprovoked harassment or violence MUST have incited the incident, somehow. Consider that just about every time there is a post on this site about a woman getting raped, there is ALWAYS that person who says she "asked for it". I really don't think the answer to bullying lies in someone denying or hiding who they really are. People will always be intolerant, but that doesn't mean they should be allowed to act on those feelings in a malicious or violent way. I would argue that the bigots of the world need to keep themselves in check, not the other way around.

PS I was picked on in school, too. I didn't have acne...I was just "weird". What cream would clear that up? :-)

Why is it that the anti- 'bullying' crusade always focuses on homosexuals' difficulties?

I had pretty bad acne in high school -- I got a lot of shit for that ('pizza-face, clearasiloholic') . The fat kids got shit, the 'challenged' kids got shit. The nerds and the band geeks got shit. But it is the gay kids that are supposedly 'at risk'. Well, they are at risk when, like that kid in Oxnard, they sexually harass other guys at a time when a lot of young men are a bit conflicted in their sexuality. And as the hung jury in that case shows, normal folks put blame on the school admin that encouraged the flamboyant and inappropriate conduct on the part of the shooting victim. Back in the day, when homosexuals were required to be discrete, the incident would not have happened.

And 'homophobia' reminds me of the old Soviet technique of labeling dissenters are mentally ill.

Nice job blaming the victim Mitch. I guess, using the same logic, that women should be blamed when they're raped because they're attractive, they could just be more discrete about their beauty and avoid being raped. It's about parents failing to teach (largely by converse behaviour) that that behaviour is not acceptble.

Why should anyone need to be discrete for who they are? I don't think you are paying the bills/taxes for these people who have the same rights to express their gender as they feel fit. Yes it is true that may are bullied, for kids who are GLBT many times have no one to talk with. Not even their parents, I'm sure you would not be in fear that your parents were going to kick you out or disown you because your pizza-face, I do unsterdstand that it's hard being a kid/teen. Be well john
