Does the Vatican Think the Crystal Cathedral is Fugly?

Sure, so Diocese of Orange Bishop Tod D. Brown thinks he scored a coup by purchasing the Crystal Cathedral from the Schuller clan. But the move isn't being universally celebrated by conservative Catholics, many whom long derided the Crystal Cathedral as the antithesis of Catholic church beauty and whom are now understandably aghast that the building will now be the seat of Orange County Catholicism.

One of those critics, however, is an important one: the Vatican.

In an article appearing in the Italian daily La Stampa, the paper's "Vatican Insider" column noted that Cardinal Antonio Cañizares Llovera, Prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship felt it was "very urgent" to crack down on recent American Catholic practices to erect what the paper called "garage-style churches" that were "avant-garde constructions that look like anything but a church." Tellingly, accompanying the article was a picture of the Crystal Cathedral.

Will Pope Benedict XVI make Brownie destroy the Crystal Cathedral and erect something more majestic? Will he at the very least give Brownie a tongue-lashing for going against orthodoxy? Regardless, this is another example of how clueless Brownie ultimately is. Pissing off your bosses? Heckuva job, Brownie!

Tod D. Brown did served for "God of America" He refused to serve for "God of Rome"If he did not purchase the Crystal, he must supports from USD. $300 to $800 millions annual to Rome, but last year he did supported only, 96 millions for Rome, which was not satisfied his boss. He knew what will happen to him. The best ways to use resignation for safety.

I think he is tallest, He did served for all Gods and he wants to serve for all people around the world.

Its amazing how someone can make a career out of bashing the catholic church? I want to say Gustavo is one trick pony but he actually know two of them. The church is never going to return the days of building Gothic cathedrals and no ones is going to demand that the crystal cathedral be torn down. Just because Gustavo says so doesn't make it so. That goes for his ask a Mexican column as well.

In my opinion, the brilliance of this purchase was not so much in the cathedral building itself as much as in the location and the campus.  It is a great property for the Diocese and the location is practically the geographic center of Orange County - perfect for hundreds of years.  There will probably be a new (replacement) cathedral built there in the next 20 to 40 years.  The Crystal Cathedral will do until then.

As long as Brownie sends the proper payments to CathliCorp(tm) headquarters in Rome, the CEO (Pope Palatine the Magnificent) will be pleased. After all, this religion thing is a business, and as a regional business manager, Brownie MUST toe the line.  Corporate policies and procedures will be followed, or Brownie may be demoted.

You're the loser that wrote "Bishop Tod D. Brown Fails OC Catholics Again by Failing to Buy Crystal Cathedral" on October 27: http://blogs.ocweekly.com/nave...

How do you feel now?  Like the loser that you are?

Pope Benedict XVI is a highly educated man.  His background extends past theology and philosophy to the arts.  He is an accomplished pianist.  I'm certain he has the background to appreciate the work of acclaimed architect Philip Johnson.  You clearly don't but I'm sure the Pope does.  I'm also sure he will approve the purchase...

Fr. John,

How are we going to deal with this. With thismany glass walls it's going to be really hard to defend you, when you protect the priests that butt fuck and RAPE the kids.

I'll start a couple of groups, for you Friend, but my wife is working for Bill Campbell now, so we need to be careful. We HATE faggots, but you guys butt fucking kids, makes that hard.

So maybe we could cover up some of the windows, so I don't look like sucha hypocrite and my wife as such a whore to the system.

How is it, I could defend GAY PREISTS and then have my wife: Laura Cunningham, oppose GAY MARIAGE??? SHUT THE FUCK UP!

We are friends of Scott Baugh. THATS HOW!

It is tragic that Brownie believes all Church obligations to abuse victims have been satisfied.... nothing is further from the truth. Has anyone checked with the way Diocesan employees are treated, how they are punished if they dare report any type of child endangerment, the disgraceful health insurance benefits provided to dedicated Catholic school teachers and employees, the terrorism that Diocesan General Counsel Schinderle creates without a total disregard for respect of human dignity?

Bishop Brown and his corrupt attorneys control the thoughts and actions of every Diocesan employee who follows the law, especially as it relates to protecting children.  They will destroy, defame, blacklist and harass behind closed doors to example the cost of protecting children.

If Pope Benedict was smart, he would immediately ax anything Brownie does before Brownie's so called mandatory retirement at age 75 years old.  Brownie and his corrupt attorneys need to stall as long as possible, with the assistance of the OC District Attorney and OC Sheriff's Department, to ensure all statutes of limitation have expired for crimes that have been committed against children and employees.

Brown turned 75 on the 15th you clueless dickhead.  Why don't you stop lying about the Catholic Church?  It might be a nice change of pace for you...

The author of this article does not understand how the Catholic Church works.  Bishop Brown is the 'Pope' of the Diocese of Orange.  First, the diocese of Oakland's new Cathedral was 190 million dollars, the archdiocese of Los Angeles new Cathedral was 250 million dollars.  57 million to purchase and another 50 million to get the new Cathedral and entire campus up to Catholic worship and current use standards is a deal when compared to the other two new Cathedrals in California.  Space dedicated to the glory or God...I can not see anyone in charge in the RC Church having a problem with that. The exterior of the Crystal Cathedral gives glory to the God of all Christians.

SmellsBells

It won't cost $50M to refurbish and upgrade the Crystal Cathedral.  But there is clearly a great deal of deferred maintenance so I'm sure the cost will be $10M+  No matter what, it's a spectacular bargain.

markcdel

I picked the 50 million dollar figure up from another article.  Read the wiki article about the LA Cathedral and it's furnishings.

SmellsBells

Given the publicity of the Crystal Cathedral and the new commission it seems rather likely that Benedict himself spent some time reviewing/approving this purchase.

Thank you for the additional information.  Does the Cathedral approval process resemble the (arch)bishop approval process where the Congregation in the Vatican acting for the Pope most of the time approves the name submitted by the nation's Vatican ambassodor ?The Angilicans will submit 3 names to the Congregation mirroring what they have done before joining the Church.

SmellsBells

I wrote that part of the wiki.  It came from Msgr. Francis Weber's book.  It's unfair in a way because most of the prices were "sponsoring" prices.  The ambo didn't cost a million dollars for example but if you wanted it attributed to you, that's what you paid and most of the money was used elsewhere.

gustavoarellano

Tell that to the Pope!

markcdel

I have heard that a Pope was once asked about something and he said that the request was not within his power, but there was an american  Bishop was in Rome.  The RC Church in the USA was under missionary for a long time and that gave it's heirarchy extraordianary powers.  The Pope is very limited in regard to a Bishop's authority in his diocese.  Europe is not the USA.  The USA is not Europe.  A Bishop is responsible for his diocese's church in this time and this place

SmellsBells
SmellsBells

Anytime an (arch)diocese wants to build (or in this case buy) a cathedral it must be approved by the Pope, including the name of the cathedral.  The name our Lady of the Angels was approved (but never built) for LA back in the 1940's but the design had to be approved before it was actually built.

Bp. Brown has mentioned that the approval process had already begun when the Diocese's bid was chosen and that he anticipated no problems.

markcdel
markcdel

Bishop Brown must submit his resignation around the time of his 75th birthday.  The Vatican can leave him in place as administrator to complete this project.  There is no one in place like AB Gomez was in LA.  Getting a replacement appointed can take a year plus or minus several months.  What is your authority for the Pope approving Cathedrals?  I have never heard that.

SmellsBells
SmellsBells

The Pope must approve the construction or purchase of all cathedrals.  Given that Bp. Brown is retiring, I think he would reject the Crystal Cathedral in a heartbeat if he though it was an unsuitable edifice/campus.

That is 'Mission status'...

Pissed at him for potentially buying a building but sheltering peds is, by appearances, not a problem, OK. And people think that Catholic hierarchy might be out of touch with their flock because? Are these guys intentionally trying to sabotage the mission?
