The Associated Press is reporting that Apple computers co-founder Steve Jobs has died.

The Apple homepage has switched to a full-page image of the 56-year-old mastermind of the iPhone, iPad, iPod, iMac and iTunes with text that reads, "Steve Jobs 1955-2011."

"We are deeply saddened to announce that Steve Jobs passed away today," reads a statement from Apple's board of directors. "Steve's brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives. The world is immeasurably better because of Steve. His greatest love was for his wife, Laurene, and his family. Our hearts go out to them and to all who were touched by his extraordinary gifts."

Jobs' childhood friend and Apple co-founder, Steve Wozniak, reportedly told ABC News, "I'm shocked and disturbed."

The cause of death has not been revealed. Jobs beat back an unusual form of pancreatic cancer in 2004 and in 2009 he was forced to get a liver transplant. He stepped down from Apple in August due to what was assumed to be declining health.
